Already into the fourth week of term 1 and I have to say this has been a most enjoyable andproductive start to a school year. The staff thank each and every one of you for ensuringyour children were well and truly prepared for school, all the necessary equipment and incomplete school uniform, this has in no small measure contributed to the excellent start.

The numbers have settled and the organisation of classes will remain, we have been veryfortunate in that there has been minimal changes to class lists. Please keep in mind that at

times due to unforeseen circumstances we do have the need to reorganise classconfigurations.

This year is the first year that Pre Primary has become compulsory, this means Pre Primarystudents must be enrolled and attend five days per week. If your child is absent from schoolit is a requirement that a note is provided explaining the absence, this can be phoned throughor sent via text message or given verbally to the teacher. Student attendance needs to be aminimum of 90%, below this percentage and the attendance will be flagged and investigated. Each newsletter we will include the percentage attendance for each year level PP Year 7and the overall attendance. The year group with the highest attendance will be identified onan Attendance Honour Poster placed on the door of the front entry to the school. So,Congratulations Year 3, for Weeks 1 and 2 you are on an awesome 98%.

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate the Student Councillors for the wonderful

way they have performed their duties, the leadership they have provided and for being suchexcellent role models for all students in the school.

A number of class teachers have already held their parent information session. Thesemeetings are a perfect opportunity to find out how the class will operate, the expectations inregards to behaviour and homework and any events that may arise during the year. Many ofthe meetings have been well attended and we thank you for taking time out of your busyschedules to attend; research clearly shows that when the school works in partnership withfamilies students achieve better outcomes in all respects.

When the Governor of West Australia Mr McCusker and his wife Mrs McCusker were inAlbany two weeks ago they visited our school. Accompanying them was Young Australian ofthe Year Adram Azimi. This was a real treat for our students, the Governor and his wifespoke to a group of students about their program Kids Who Give WA. This is a program that

encourages and nurtures the social conscience of young people, and celebrates and rewardsoutstanding acts of care, kindness and giving by young West Australians. Research showsthat people who care about others are happier and more accepted in their community. Theaim of the program is to teach children the importance of giving back. If you are interested inthe Kids Who Give WA program go to the interactive www.kidswhogivewa.com.au website formore detailed information.

Further in this newsletter is a scanned copy of an article in the West Australian last week. Itis the 30th Year for the Jump Rope for Heart, in the article there is mention of Mount LockyerPrimary School. The photos are of students that were in the original Lockyer LeapersSkipping Squad, Dougie Roberts (pictured doing the push-ups) Kathy Pomery who is nowKath Hart and is quoted in the article, Arlia Sluiter and unfortunately I am not sure who theothers are. The photos are taken at our school during the jump off which we do annually toraise money for the Heart Foundation.

This Thursday the assembly will be hosted by the Student Councillors and entertainment willbe provided by the School Choir. Look forward to seeing you there.

Chaplains ChatHello every one.I was asked this week some questions about who I amand what my role is here. So I thought it was a good timeto reintroduce myself to everyone new and old.My real name is Greg Barber. Everyone at school knowsme as Chappie. I have a diploma in Childrens servicesand have worked as a qualified Child Carer and worked infamily support with YMCA here in Albany for many years. This is my third year here at Mt Lockyer and its been agreat experience getting to know everyone. I have beenmarried to the beautiful Eleanor for 17yrs now and wehave two wonderful children Katja 15, and Quinn 11.

My main role here as the school Chaplain is to be a partof the schools student and family support program.Children cannot learn to their full potential if they areworried or stressed over day-to-day things happening intheir lives. This may be a friend thats not talking to them,a change in routine, or an argument they may have had athome. Perhaps something they have seen on TV hasstuck in their minds and is worrying them. We can be

constantly surprised as parents at what makes a childanxious. Dropping off a child in this state for six hours ofschool can be worrying for the parents as well. Havingsomeone that can take a personal interest in them andwatch over them for you is very reassuring. As I am not a teacher, my place in the school system isunique and very flexible. This enables me to be able tomeet the different needs of parents and children from preprimary to yr 7.

I spend my day interacting with students either one onone or in groups all throughout the day. You may see meon the basketball court, on the oval, at sports carnivals oron the roof collecting lost balls. Often Im just sitting in the

sand pit enjoying a lively conversation with a beautifulsmiling child and my day is fulfilled.

So if you have any concerns regarding your child orsomething personal that I may be able to help you with, even if it has nothing to do with the school, please feelfree to stop me in the halls or contact me through theoffice.I am available Monday to Thursday during school hours.I will be talking more about families, children andchaplaincy in further newsletters so keep a look out.The chaplains services are always respectful, private andconfidential.

    CheersChappie

A studentwill only be excused from participating if they handin a note from their parent with a valid reason for notbeing able to participate, or the parent has spoken toeither the class or Phys. Ed.
