Zaferia – South Design District: Here Comes the Food Trucks

Through both the efforts of the Design District and Councilmember O’Donnell, wehad five very, very popular food trucks come to Long Beach on Coronado Street,

just north of Anaheim on Wednesday. This was a popular event and attractedapproximately 500 people, many from out of the area. These food trucks areextremely well liked and have their own websites, and are followed religiously bya fan-base loyal to each food truck. With Council direction, we have beenworking to help facilitate these types of food trucks to be in Long Beach. This isan event, which will go on every Wednesday through August 2011.

Summer Youth Employment: Hire-a-Youth

As far back as anyone can remember, each year the federal governmentprovided the City of Long Beach approximately $2 million dollars to hire summeryouth. This provides young men and women from ages 16-24 the opportunity towork for public, private and non-profit entities, gaining great work experience toenter the job market. This year the federal government dropped that number tozero. Basically, no city in America is getting any youth employment dollars inthe coming year…..That did not stop Bryan Rogers from WorkforceDevelopment. Bryan was able to anticipate this and craft together approximately$250K from various funding sources to continue our “Hire-a-Youth Program” in

some fashion. Attached are three flyers that Workforce is putting out: one forthe youth, one for parents; and one for employers to get people into internshipsand job opportunities.

More Workforce Information

Attached is an employment opportunity flyer from Workforce Development,“Pacific Gateway.” We are trying to reach out to show people how to accessthe Project Labor Agreement (PLA) jobs at the Harbor and the Airport. We havealready had two placements into administrative jobs for the Airport Terminal PLA.

Black Hawk Meetings

Councilwoman Schipske hosted a meeting on Wednesday evening of this weekto solicit public input regarding the proposed relocation of Black Hawk helicopters

to the Joint Forces Training Base in Los Alamitos. These helicopters havespecific flight plans and hours of operation and it is important to get input fromthe communities where the helicopters will be flying. The General in charge ofthe Joint Forces Training Base was present to answer questions.

Hot August Nights

It was a terrible blow to find out earlier this week that the Hot August Nights eventhas been cancelled for Long Beach. A lot of energy was put into the event, primarily through the CVB and the Mayor’s office. It had the ability to perhapseven match the Grand Prix attendance throughout a one-week period.

Additionally, through the sales of many of these vintage cars, we would reapsales tax advantages. The bottom line is, the city of Reno made a huge effort tomake sure that they were able to keep this event. Both mayors of Reno andSparks evidenced this by joining the Board of Directors for Hot August Nights justthis month.

Redevelopment

Obviously, there was a lot of discussion regarding the Redevelopment Agency atTuesday night’s meeting. Just a fun fact, all nine council districts have someredevelopment portions. District 3 has a small site off Bellflower Boulevard in

the Spinnaker Bay area that was created to address a Brownfield site, andDistrict 5 has property south of the Airport on the north side of Spring.
