Recreation Programming Team

This quarter has been busy for the Recreation Programming Team, which has conducted or assisted many successful events to include the Easter Egg Hunt and Brunch, Bingo Grand Opening, Month of the Military Child Kickoff/ Festival/Concert, Ceremony of Remembrance, Marina Dedication , SCCA Autocross and Sacco Field Dedication.

We are beginning to partner with local community recreation programs, such as the U. S. Corps of Engineers, Milford State Park, Manhattan Parks and Recreation and K-State Student Union, to enhance both on-post and off-post events.

We said farewell to Greta Heiman, who moved with her husband to Sabetha, KS, to pursueher career. We welcomed Duane Clayton, who recently graduated from Georgia Southern, with a degree in Recreation and Tourism Management.

Congratulations to Luke and Shayna McElwain on the birth of their baby boy, Gavin.

BOSS

BOSS continues to operate great events for Single Soldiers. This includes numerous trips, events and community outreach programs, such as visits to the Topeka VA Home. BOSS completed their move to the new USO (in the ITR building), which gives them better access to Soldiers and a great venue to hold meetings and social events. It also allows them to better partner with USO. BOSS has developed strong partnerships with the Commissary and Warrior Zone and has published their first newsletter, which will be included in the Post Paper.

The HK Crew at Riley’s Conference Center has dedicated their time and effort for the past 18 months into changing the overall customer perception of the Center. Providing first rate customer service and excellent tasting food has taken Riley’s Conference Center to the next level. Two years ago, Riley’s was hanging on by a string and barely able to sustain operations. Now, Riley’s Conference Center is having a hard time being able to accommodate every customer that wishes to use the facility. “It feels good to be able to tell a customer that we are completely booked, but also frustrating because we do not have the space to be able to accommodate every function.” Jill Singleton.

Although Jill Singleton (Banquet and Catering Manager), Angela Ballard (Cater) and Tyrone Grant (Executive Chef) may not have their own TV show, they certainly have the ability to provide technical and creative proficiency in all of their creations.

Tracy WhiteMrs. White has converted from the civilian world to the Military world in record-breaking speed. Not knowing what the Army was about, she decided to take a job at the Warrior Zone. Her relentless effort to learn the new system has shown during the past six months. She continues to amaze her supervisors with her willingness to take on new projects and grow professionally.Fantastic job Tracy, and keep up the great work and attitude.

Bingo Staff

One of the hardest customers to please are Bingo Players. With the opening of the new Bingo Program on Fort Riley, the staff at Rally Point has dedicated their efforts to ensure top notch customer service.

“The employees are very helpful and cheerful, not like most bingo places. I even saw one employee help someone who has never played bingo and took the time to sit and tell this person all there is to know about playing bingo...that was a first for me! Usually you are on your own. I just wanted to say a few words about this wonderful new program.” Joan Fullerton

Employee of the QuarterMr. David Kennedy was voted the 2nd Quarter FMWR Employee of the quarter for his outstanding support to the Business Operations and the entire DFMWR organization.

“It is easy to provide the customer with what they want, but it is our responsibility to give the customer what they didn’t even know they wanted.” David Kennedy

Address from Sonya Douglas :

I would like to take this time to thank you all for your hard work over the past year. You have all worked very hard in ensuring that we opened all our new facilities and reduced the waiting list from over 200 to no waitlist. In the past year we have added an additional 150 staff members to our CYSS family. I would ask that you all remember what it was like on your first day, so many new people, so many names to remember, and remembering to clock in and out each time you leave the facility. Please take the time to greet new staff as they arrive at your facility or in your classroom. Remember to reach out, talk to them, mentor, provide guidance and ask them to lunch. We all remember what it was like on our first day, so make new staff members’ first days something to remember.

Thank you to all the CYSS staff and families who came out to join us on 21 May 2010 for our first annual Provider Appreciation Picnic. If you haven’t heard, we had a blast. To watch all the staff perform their chants and show so much team spirit was a joy to see. I would like to thank each and every one of you and your families who came out to attend, and I hope to see you all next year. We plan on doing this bigger and better each year, because you all deserve it and much more.

Congratulations are in order for thefollowing staff in obtaining their Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential.Monett Daniels, Monique Taylor of Warren CDC and Lisa Johnson of Normandy CDC have all obtained their Child Development Associate (DCA) credential.

The CYSS management team wishes you all the best of luck with you CYSS career.

AccreditationNormandy CDC is to be congratulated in obtaining accreditation status. The entire staff of Normandy CDC worked tireless hours in preparation for their accreditation. Obtaining accreditation is no small feat. When you see them in passing, give them a pat on that back, and congratulate them.

Normandy has set the standard on how to knock it out of the park. Whitside, Forsyth and School Age Center, you have big shoes to fill, but I know you will make our CYSS team proud and knock it out of the park as well.

StaffingI’m sure you have all heard, we have a hiring freeze in the Department of the Army, but we are doing everything we can to obtain approval to hire staff as soon as we receive resignations. Quality standards of care will not be affected by the freeze, and we are working hard to ensure that the hiring freeze has no impact on CYSS effectiveness.

We have several critical vacancies in CYSS. If you or someone you know is interested in advancing or joining the A Team, you are all welcome to apply by going to cpol.army.mil

History of Army Community ServiceACS opened its’ doors in May 1970. The building was located on the east side of King Field house. After moving around for several years, it is now located on Custer Hill. ACS and the Fort Riley Library shared this space for some time. The library moved several years ago as ACS started growing out of their allotted space. ACS has over 70 employees. We still house the American Red Cross, Women and Child program , K-State Extension and the Army’s Substance Abuse Program. ACS has been helping Soldiers and their Family members for over 40 years.

Employee Recognition Jill O’Sullivan: Is temporally detailed to the SFAC.Teresa Griffin and James Alderson :Have completed the Civilian Education System Foundation Course.Tina Osterman: Has completed the Employee development program level 3.Theresa Gale: Has completed the Employee Development Program level 1.

“ACS could not keep their doors open without the help of all our volunteers. It’s Army folks helping Army

folks at the grass roots level. Thank you to all who have and are still volunteering.”

Freedom Alliance Troop Appreciation DinnerACS had 75 Warriors, Cadre, Families, Staff and Volunteers attend the Freedom Alliance Troop Appreciation dinner. It was a fun and relaxing event. The menu was a broad offering ofappetizers, main dish, beverages, and dessert. About 10 children attended this event. A couple from the Olathe area, who supported us last year were in attendance. They contributed to the payment of the meal and provided Panera gift cards to all attendees. Mrs. Lisa Hoofard, spouse of SSG Hoofard, won the raffle, a 100.00 gift certificate to Whiskey Creek. Fun was had by all who attended.Charles Jackson and Rebecca Davis havereceived an honorable mention during the 2010 Safety Inspection.

What’s NewSeveral ACS employees are gearing up for the introduction of the General Fund Enterprise System (GFEBS). This is a new Army wide accounting tool and we are all looking forward to learning and using the new system.
