Update from the Editor’s Desk

T he Siamese Cat Society (SCS) held our AGM on February 2nd, 2019. We would like to ex-

press our sincere apologies to members for the delay in getting a newsletter out to you

during the last part of 2018. Unfortunately, the committee has had severe illness affecting

three members or their family during (and prior to) 2018 and 2019, and this has meant the

website and production of the magazine Felis have not been possible to maintain. Therefore

we have decided to send this first issue of the 2019 newsletters as a hard copy to financial

members until the website is ready for future use again.

We welcome new committee members this year just when we needed some revitalisation!

Claire Watson will take over as Treasurer, freeing Sharon Black to concentrate on her other

main role as Secretary and Sandra Sweetman will assist Peter Gunczy with the website. The

full list of committee members is shown on page 6. Special thanks to Tony Hurry for his undy-

ing passion and determination to keep our society functioning.

As always, we welcome your input to this newsletter — any photos of your cats, news of

kittens, stud updates etc. are all welcome. If you wish to add or correct any details in our

Breeders and Stud Lists, or contribute some photos/news to our next newsletter please email

the editor: Marion Anstis at: [email protected]

Trilian JN Pepper, Best Sealpoint Kitten, poses for a photo at the Siamese Cat Show

In reviewing 2018, the very first thing I must do is thank Sharon Black for undertaking the tasks of Secretary,

Treasurer, Social Media Moderator and Cats NSW delegate. Each of these roles consumes many hours

throughout the year as well as costs associated, many of which are not reclaimed from the Society. Sharon

accepted the added role of Treasurer when our former Treasurer could not seek re-election due to poor health.

Again a big thank you Sharon for your efforts in these roles.

Unfortunately our SCS website has not been able to provide timely updates and information during 2018.

Christine Gunczy is another of our committee members struggling with her health, and husband Peter, our

Webmaster, is rightfully prioritising his time between supporting her and maintaining his professional commit-

ments. Peter has apologised many times for his unavoidable tardiness. His skills and expertise in managing

our website are much appreciated and he will continue in this role in 2019 however he has also agreed to men-

tor Sandra Sweetman in supporting our website.

To assist in keeping members informed, we are endeavouring to distribute a Newsletter as a shortened version

of FELIS. I thank Marion Anstis for being the driving force behind its instigation and encourage each and every

member to forward future contributions…no matter how small or minor you might think they are. The initial one

will be posted, following that our website will upload them.

Our SCS financial coffers received some strong growth with the following incomes:

• $10,810.54 bequeathed by the estate of the late Lesley Ann Bourke

• $2340.00 from sale of majority of our show cages

• $920 from sale of majority of our show trestle tables

My thanks to Sharryn Hilton and John Ferguson for allowing the SCS to store its property at their Fullcircle

Farm and for managing the exchange of properties (cages and tables) during 2018. In addition, many of the

leads for these sales came from Sharon Black and her work in advertising and promoting these items on social

media.

As for the bequeathed amount from Lesley Bourke, what a surprise this was to our committee!! Those of us

who have been involved with SCS for decades cannot recall the name nor do we have it on file anywhere. As-

sumption made that she was owned by a Siamese whether from rescue or purchase or other, &/or possibly

assisted by SCS at the time, deciding then to leave some of her wealth to SCS. In recognition of this very gen-

erous thought, it was agreed that a memorial prize of $200 cash be made at our Special Awards cat show to

the “Pure, One Breed” Siamese exhibit with the Best Personality. The inaugural awarding of this is at the Cats

NSW February 2019 show.

Speaking of shows, 2018 was the first year we did not hold a SCS show. Instead after much deliberation and

then agreement by our committee, our specialty awards were to be incorporated in to Cats NSW All Breeds

shows. The first of these was a 2-ring event held 10th March 2018 at Riverstone with 13 “pure” Siamese exhib-

ited amongst 24 Group2 entries. Ring judging success went to the following:

R1 Best Kitten: Trilian PW Caspian o & b: Grant & Penny Richardson

My thanks again to our media administrators Peter Gunczy (website) and Sharon Black (Facebook) for

their efforts in 2018. These two outlets are a key reason in not only promoting our Society but also in bringing

customers to our breeders.

Congratulations and thank you to those members who enjoyed show success and as importantly ex-

hibited and promoted our Siamese breed. Your efforts contribute to maintain the interest and understanding

of our “pure” Siamese. exposure. Special congratulations to the following members for a job well done in

2018 achieving success in Cat of the Year :

• Astraxalotte Cattery (Lee and Cheryl Gallagher) NSWCFA 1st Male Kitten, 1st & 4th Female Kitten,

3rd & 5th Desexed Kitten, 1st Male Cat, 2nd Female Cat, 1st Neuter Cat

We have welcomed some new breeders in to SCS and offer them any assistance needed to continue

to strengthen and promote our breed. Sadly yet understandably Joan Wright (Lealjo Cattery) has decided to

call it a day following many years of breeding “pure”. I am certain that many of us have Lealjo somewhere

through our pedigrees and we wish Joan all the very best into the future.

Should our AGM decide to continue its affiliation with Cats NSW, it will be under its newly elected ex-

ecutive committee. As at 1st December Shara McKay is President, Jenny Weekes is Secretary and Susan

Hudson its Treasurer, with Peta Sperduty Snr VP and Kate Carter VP. These changes are resultant primarily

due to some of Cats NSW founding members (Brad & Sharon Curtis, Bruce & Irene Chandler) deciding not to

re-stand due to relocating out of NSW. Please continue to support Cats NSW by attending its shows and reg-

istering your kittens.

Finally I again must thank my fellow committee members for their work in 2018 and for the support

they have given me as your SCS President. New opportunities and new challenges are something to look

forward to in 2019 and I encourage and welcome each of your ideas and continued support. To all our mem-

bers, lets continue to strive to promote the virtues and values of being owned by a Siamese which is a para-

mount reason why your SCS committee is here working for you.

What a wonderful team we had for a committee of the Siamese Cat Society in 2018. All having the best interest

and passion of the pure Siamese breed, we also share the same reason for being active in the SCS club – the

love for our Siamese breed. In order to continue breeding, showing and having our pure Siamese as pets, we

need to continue working on keeping the club together with a strong committee.

I have to say Tony Hurry puts in so much time and effort to keep the club going, for which I thank him immense-

ly. Marion has been so helpful on my journey of learning the secretary role and I thank her for the support and

help.

I thank Peter and Christine Gunczy for all the work they have done over the years for the SCS club. The website

is a big task to maintain Peter has done a wonderful job to keep it going. Christine has always been there to

help with anything at the shows, kitten list and meetings, and both have been very passionate about the club

and the breed and put in many hours.

Every person on our committee does a wonderful job at keeping the club together for our beautiful pure Sia-

mese and I thank every person in the committee for putting their hand up and volunteering to help. Your work

is very much appreciated and I am hoping that in 2019 we can keep that monument going, grow our member-

ship and increase awareness of our SCS club and the Pure Siamese breed with the public.

I thank Cats NSW for putting on our SCS show in 2018 with our SCS awards being presented at the show. What

a great effort they went to and they must be commended for their work in ensuring our pure Siamese were

promoted. It was great teamwork, with the show being a fantastic success.

Congratulations to all the winners who received awards for their pure Siamese cats at the 2018 SCS show. It

was wonderful to see our members out there at all of the shows increasing awareness of our stunning breed.

We had a few changes within the club this year with a large sum of inheritance from a lovely lady, Lesley Kay

Bourke, giving the club an opportunity to offer a new award at SCS shows of the “PURE, ONE BREED, SIAMESE

EXHIBIT WITH THE BEST PERSONAILITY”. The prize will be $200 for the lucky winner. Our Income for 2018 was

$15,075.55 (includes $10,810.54 from estate of Lesley Kay Bourke) and Annual Expenditure was $887.

We made additional funds by the selling of cages, tables and trailer which will help the club minimise down

some of the barriers that usually can occur with a limited bank account balance!

I am hoping the committee for 2019 can continue on doing a great job and while I am happy to stay on the

committee, I would prefer to do one job instead of 2 this year, as it has been a bit of a struggle doing the two

positions. I thank everyone for allowing me to be the Secretary and Treasurer for 2018 it was a pleasure to vol-

unteer for the club.

I would like to introduce you all to our very special boy, Kalinya YJ Sherwood. As with all our Kalinya Siamese,

Sherwood has an amazing personality. So much so, that he has earned himself a reputation on the show bench

here in South Australia!

Sherwood’s very first show in SA was the Festival City Cat Club Winter Show. The steward got him out of his

cage, presented Sherwood and put him on the table. After Sherwood had a bit of a strut around the table and

said, “Hello!” to the ring clerk, he decided it was time to have cuddles with judge, Fiona Hawkins. Up he

climbed onto Fiona’s shoulder where he was cuddled, and in return, he gave kisses and face rubs. I have a won-

derful video that captured this moment and luckily some photos to share with you all of this heart-melting mo-

ment.

Since this day, Sherwood has found himself a reputation amongst judges and exhibitors for his loving ways. He

has been called a “show-off”, “cuddle monster” and some have even gone so far as to call him a “tart”!

In 2016, Sherwood made us proud with winning Siamese Kitten of the Year and Reserve Group 2 Kitten of the

Year with The Feline Association of South Australia (FASA). Now in 2017 he has amazed us yet again with win-

ning Siamese Neuter of the Year and Best Group 2 Neuter of the Year with FASA! We are so proud of Sherwood

but also of this win for Pure Siamese.

Thank to you Tony and Bev Hurry of Kalinya Siamese for this remarkable boy.
