Kia ora koutou Cory Hoffman our ‘Courage’ winner is very excited about the prospect of jumping out of a plane at 14,000 feet with Skydive Wanaka! Well done to all of the 70 students who earned courage medals for their persistence, taking risks, supporting others and for doing the right thing when it mattered. Our Positive Behaviour for Learning Team have now successfully raised awareness of two of the big three values of our Kawa – Respect and Courage. You could ask your child if they know and understand our third core value. WARM – this was an acronym used by our presenters in our staff development day on Monday. Our focus was reinforcing the restorative practices, or RP, we use in our school to manage and improve behaviour and relationships in our school. We have been using RP for several years now and it has been one of the keys to the settled learning environment that is a feature of our school. WARM and is a process for ‘putting things right’ when things go wrong in the classrooms or school grounds and harm is caused. It stands for What happened, who was Affected by the behaviour, how do you Repair the harm and Move on and ensure it does not happen again. It is as relevant at school as it is in our relationships at home or other workplaces. It was a valuable day. Congratulations to our Erik Barros, Sam Moodie, Jerry Salu, and Campbell Morton of ‘West Groove Company’ on winning the Peoples’ Choice Award at the SmokeFreeRockQuest at the end of last term. Their distinctive mix of Brazilian rhythms and rap stood out for it’s musicianship and originality. Well done to our Jump Jam team who have qualified for the South Island Competition in September. I have enjoyed seeing their energy and dynamic choreography during their lunch time practices. He rawe to our ski and snowboard team of Krystal Roberts, Liam Paish, Denholm Rinkin and Jacob Jones who represented the College at the Otago/Southland Ski and Snowboard champs at Cardrona on Monday. The team finished first overall in the mixed competition and Krystal Roberts gained 4th place in boarder cross and 1st place in slopestyle. On Sunday evening a good crowd came to hear the Everest Base Camp Team present a slide show of their unforgettable adventure trekking to Base Camp via Phortse Primary School and Cho La Pass. It was a fitting way to share the experience and once again say thank you to our 70 sponsors and community for the outstanding support the team received. There is a strong possibility we will be venturing to Everest again in 2015 ‘Pursuing the Highest Peaks’ and planning for this would start towards the end of this year. Our Year 12 geographers and biologists enjoyed their two day field trip to Dunedin this week. On Tuesday Nathan from the ‘Attitude’ team presented a valuable message to Year 9 to 12 students on good decision making, personal well being and building positive relationships. Motorsport legend Greg Murphy stressed the importance of ‘care behind the wheel’ in his drive safe presentation on Wednesday and on Friday Year 10 students developed their learning, study and revision/exam skills with Stuart Wright from UCANDO. Our Open Evening on 19 August is an opportunity for our school community to look around their school and see some of the physical changes that have occurred in the past 3 years. It is also a chance to talk with staff and some of our students and find out a little more about the programmes on offer. The evening starts at 6.30pm in the Auditorium and everyone in the school community, including future parents and students from Goldfields and Cromwell Primary, are most welcome. Nevis still leads the house competition but this may all change with the school cross country on Wednesday morning next week. STAFF PROFILE David Beer is teaching Chemistry at Cromwell College until the end of the year, replacing Alex Pearson who has shifted to Dunstan High School, which is closer to home for him. Prior to this, David taught at Avonside Girls’ School for 13 years and Rangi Ruru, an independent school in Christchurch, for 20 years. David retired at the end of 2012. He is living in Cromwell while a house is built on his 8 hectare lifestyle block at McArthur Ridge, near Alexandra, half of which is planted in grapes. Not surprisingly, David is interested in wine and wine making. He is also a member of the Central Otago Vintage Car Club as well as an MG club. He belongs to the Cromwell Petanque Club, walks with the Alexandra Harriers group and enjoys gardening. In fact, his previous house had a 2 ½ acre garden which was used for weddings, funerals and family reunions. In 2002 David was awarded a teaching fellowship and spent six months at the University of York in the U.K. studying environmental chemistry. David is pleased to be away from earthquakes and their after-effects. He does not miss the constant disruption caused by trucks and machinery in the Christchurch rebuild.

BP BUSINESS CHALLENGE August 28-30 2013 will see Year 11 students competing in the BP Business Challenge. The challenge is a 3 day event run by the Young Enterprise Trust focussing on the fundamentals of business. Presenters from the Trust will run the programme. The BP Business Challenge is a unique 3 day experiential learning programme that develops skills, understandings and attitudes about how a successful business operates and connects the students with their local business community. Students work in teams of eight to create a hypothetical product, set up a company and prepare a business strategy to produce and sell their product. In the three days students from Cromwell College will: Form a virtual company, with an

organisational structure and directors roles. Devise a product which solves a problem, or

fills a need. Research the product, target market and

competition. Develop a business plan including strategic

planning, finance, sales and marketing and production elements.

Prepare and deliver a 10 minute presentation of their business to the panel of local judges.

All parents, caregivers and members of the community are invited to attend the event that will be held in the Cromwell College Auditorium. The best time for viewing will be the judging day when the students make their presentations to the panel of judges. This will take place between 12 and 3pm on Friday August 30 2013.
