SRC is organising this for the Geelong Hospital Appeal. So buy to help our hospital.

STUDENT INSURANCE Children being children—accidents do happen and parents are too often surprised to learn just how little

cover, if any, their children have when they suffer injuries either in or outside school hours.

StudentCover Accident Insurance was developed to give parents and guardians a helping hand when they need it most, at a very affordable price.

The annual cost of a StudentCover policy is just $29.00.

LEOPOLD BUS TRAVELLERS:

On Wednesday afternoon only, the following two bus services will be combined

C7/C5 to Leopold.

STUDENTS OFFER “WHEELIE GOOD SERVICE” AT

LEOPOLD PRIMARY SCHOOL Our Year 9 and 10 students in the ‘On 2 Wheels’ bike elective headed down to Leopold Primary School

last week to provide a friendly service to the Year 4 students.

The primary children brought their bikes along to school, in all shapes, sizes and conditions of repair, and

our students set to work to ensure that the bikes were in safe and good working order.

Their checklist covered braking, gearing and seat height among other things, and advice for any major work

that may need doing.

The students from Newcomb Secondary

College did our school proud and were

friendly and most professional in their

work.

Mr Unmack has done a fine job working

with these students and teaching them

basic bike maintenance and safety as well

as how to conduct themselves

courteously and politely when they

represent the school. Well done to the

class – great job.

Lisa Vinnicombe (Year 9 and 10 Leader)

VCAL URBAN SEED WALK MELBOURNE

On Wednesday, 23rd April the Year 12 VCAL class took a firsthand look at life on the streets in

Melbourne.

We met our guide Evan outside the Baptist church on Collins St. Evan described how homeless people

used to sleep on the steps of this church and how drug addicts would use the alley behind the church.

He said the church had a choice, try to drive away the problem or try to fix it. They chose the latter. They

put up a basketball ring in the alley, fed the homeless people lunch, provided needle bins and most

importantly a sense of belonging for those on the fringe of

society.

As part of our VCAL studies this year we are investigating

homelessness and in our walk’n’talk through the Melbourne

CBD we discussed the concepts of belonging and also

stereotyping.

By the end of the walk most of us had learned not to judge a

person without getting to know their story and that providing

a sense of community and belonging was a key aspect in

helping those who are homeless.

We concluded our walk with a lunch at the fancy Spaghetti Tree restaurant where we practised our table

manners and enjoyed a variety of delicious meals from Open Burgers to Spaghetti Marinara and Nasi

Goreng.

possible.

(biller code on your account), DIRECTLY into the SCHOOL BANK ACCOUNT (phone the office

for the bank account details), set up a regular CENTRELINK deduction (form obtained through the

office), pay IN PERSON or over the PHONE.

If you are an EMA recipient please note that your second payment will not be received until the end of

Term 3.

SAME LOVE PERFORMANCE On Thursday 24th April, our College was fortunate to have a group of students from Lara Secondary College perform

‘Same Love’ for our Year 9 and 10 students.

The performance explored the issues of bullying, friendships and the impact of homophobia. Following the

performance, Jami Jones from GASP provided information to our students about how they can become involved in

stamping out homophobia in our community.

At a College level, Faith Field (School Nurse) is co-ordinating our College Stand Out Group and a group of interested

students will be involved in planning activities for IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia) later this term.

GASP GASP holds support groups for young people who are same sex attracted or questioning their sexuality.

Research indicates the positive impact peer support groups can have on the mental health and wellbeing of same sex

attracted young people. Group membership leads to an increase in friendships and support and a reduction in

isolation and alienation that is a direct result of homophobia.

The group offers young people a chance to meet other young people who might be experiencing the same things. It

runs throughout the year and has benefited many young people.

Young people interested in this group can contact Jami Jones directly to arrange a meeting time on 5272 4977.

WHAT IS SPEECH PATHOLOGY?

Speech pathologists (or therapists) diagnose and treat people with communication disorders (eg

speech, voice) and people with problems swallowing or eating. They may work with people who have a

cleft palate, delayed speech, stuttering or brain damage, and work with other health professionals. A

number of universities in Victoria offer degrees in speech pathology. Australian Catholic Uni , La

Trobe Uni and Charles Sturt Uni at Albury-Wodonga (a NSW university) all offer 4-year degrees.

Speech pathology can also be studied at the University of Melbourne where students first complete a 3-

year undergraduate degree followed by a 2-year Masters in Speech Pathology. The Clearly-in ATAR last

year for ACU was 85.20, La Trobe (Bundoora) 90.15 (Bendigo) 83.10, and Charles Sturt 75.00. Note:

last year’s ATAR is only a guide – students are sometimes offered a place with a lower ATAR because

they did well in certain subjects (receiving a Subject Bonus), or because they had a Special Entry

Access Scheme (SEAS) application due to some disadvantage experienced in their education. ATARs

move up and down according to factors like the number of applicants for a course, the applicant’s ATARs, and the number of places available.

of Australian degrees such as Medicine at Monash University, and for the Universities of Tasmania,
