Medical Executive Committee Launches Professional Relations Committee

The Medical Executive Committee has formed a new committee of the medical staff

specifically designed to review and evaluate patient, patient family, hospital staff and

medical staff member concerns regarding behavioral issues involving medical staff

members and clinical privilege holders at Torrance Memorial Medical Center. It will be

the responsibility of this committee to assess complaints about disruptive or inappropri-

ate behavior. Those behaviors include use of profanity and vulgar expressions or

gestures; disrespectful language that impugns an individual’s race, creed, color, national

origin, religious, or political beliefs; intimidating behaviors such as slamming or throwing

of objects, verbal abuse (yelling, shouting, etc.), physical aggressiveness and sexual

harassment; lack of timely and appropriate response to requests and concerns;

retaliation against anyone who has reported or assisted in investigating allegations of

disruptive or inappropriate behavior; criticism of an individual in front of patients or

healthcare professionals that adheres to behavior previously defined.

The committee membership includes the officers of the medical staff and the clinical

department chiefs. The CMO, CNO, Medical Director of Quality and Administrator of

Medical Staff Services will be invited to attend.

New Physician Parking Spaces West Parking Structure

Dr. Whitson Receives Gary S. Nye, M.D., Award Torrance Memorial would like to congratulate Dr. Leland G. Whitson on being the first recipient to receive the Gary S. Nye, M.D., award before the CMA House of Delegates. Dr. Whitson has been involved in the “Well-being of Physician Movement” for almost 30 years. He established one of the first hospital well being committees in Southern California in the early 1980s. Today, Dr. Whitson continues to serve on the well being committees of Providence Little Company of Mary Hospi-tal and Torrance Memorial Medical Center.

Gary S. Nye, M.D., for whom the award is named, was present, and posed with Dr. Whitson after the meeting. Dr. Nye, a pioneer in his field, has served on well being committees for over 30 years, and was instrumental in the formation of the original BMQA/CMA Diversion Program. Congratulations Dr. Whitson on this well deserved honor!

Due to overcrowding in the physicians’ parking lot, an additional 20 parking spaces have been reserved for physician parking in the West Parking Structure. The additional parking spaces are located on the first floor of the West Parking Structure and are clearly marked for physician parking only.

Holiday Food and Toy Drive

Happy Holidays!

The Medical Staff Services Department would like to invite you to help others this holiday season. As you may be aware, Torrance Memorial has partnered with Harbor Interfaith to make the holidays brighter for 300 homeless and working poor families in the South Bay. The Medical Staff Services Department is collecting new, unwrapped toys for children (ages 1-12) along with movie tickets or Target and Best Buy gift cards for teens (ages 13-18) for this worthy cause. We will also accept canned goods and grocery gift cards. This effort to help the families of Harbor Interfaith will be so amazing if the hundreds of members of the Medical Staff will join in to help us. We know that things are a bit tight for everyone this year and that most people have charities of choice. However, if you are interested in helping, please drop a toy or a gift card by our office or contact us to come and pick up. We hope that you will consider this Food and Toy Drive to help those who are less fortunate than we are during this holiday season.
