Oxfordshire Children and Young People’s Plan 2018-2021

The Children’s Trust has published its plan for Oxfordshire 2018-2021.

The first of its four main aims is for children to Be Successful:

To have the best start in life

Access high quality education, employment and training that is motivational

Go to school and feel inspired to stay and learn

Have good self-esteem and faith in themselves

All schools share these aims and research shows that parental support for learning can make as much as two years difference in progress during a child’s school life. This is why we have rethought Parents Meetings to ensure that as many parents as possible are able to attend and we are now rewarding Home Learning with regular certificates in Celebration Assembly.

Learning Power

With Parents Meetings imminent we share our Learning Powers with you once again in the attached leaflet. Children are using Learning Power to become better learners and you’ll see them displayed in every classroom. Children spend only 20% of their time at school each year and the same skills and attitudes can be used at home, too!

Attendance

There is a clear link between good attendance nationally and success at school.

As a school we broke our attendance record last term with 97.35%, and over four fifths of children achieved the 96% target. Special praise goes to the 212 children who achieved 100% attendance, some of whom showed remarkable improvement on last year. Punctuality was also considerably improved across the school. Well done and keep it up!

The winning classes were Mrs Elson’s Reception class with a sensational 99.05%, Mrs Debus’ Year 2 class with 98.66% and Mrs Gilkes’ Year 3 class with 98.08%. They will get their £50 rewards soon to plan a class treat.

We also have weekly awards and there were two classes with 100% attendance in the last week before half term – Miss Postlethwaite in Year 1 and Mr Clarke in Year 5. Amazing!

There are just a very few families causing concern now and we will continue to work together to improve attendance and ensure that all children are able to do their best.

Best wishes,

Neil Blackwell

Every child has taken part in our whole school writing challenge this week, writing a draft letter of application for their dream job. Ask them about it and see what their aspirations are for the future! They’ll be improving and publishing their work next week, with the best ones being shared in our Celebration Assembly.

Remembrance Sunday

Dream Job

Next Sunday, 11 November, there will be a special Remembrance Day service at St Leonard’s Church at 10.00am. Hopefully some of you will be able to attend in person and we have asked every child to make a poppy as one of their home learning tasks, so that we have lots of poppies which we can take along on behalf of the school. Please can we have them brought in next week, the earlier the better! Poppies and other items will be on sale on behalf of the British Legion every day, with donations starting at 20p.

St Leonard’s Church

On Monday, children in Years 5 and 6 will get to watch a production called Meet The Stinkers, about the dangers of smoking. It has been organised and paid for by the Public Health Team at OCC and is about a family of smokers called (you guessed it) the Stinkers! This fits in well with our SCIB focus week which begins on 19 November, all about substance abuse and how we can keep ourselves fit and healthy. That week will also see Smoke Free Homes visiting school with their van, hopefully signing up parents to a commitment to stop smoking and some of you will have already met Toni at the Castle Quay SCIB event.
