This spring has been decidedly less than ideal for out door sports particularly track and field. With scores of track meets throughout the state being cancelled or endured in cold and rain, the 5 th and 6 th grade athletes competed undaunted this past week at “The Black Oval.” What incredible participation despite the cold! There were 20 heats of the 400m, 47 heats of the 100m and 41 heats of the 200m. We love our athletes! This spring has been decidedly less than ideal for out door

sports particularly track and field. With scores of track

meets throughout the state being cancelled or endured in

cold and rain, the 5th and 6th grade athletes competed

undaunted this past week at “The Black Oval.”

What incredible participation despite the cold! There were

20 heats of the 400m, 47 heats of the 100m and 41 heats of

the 200m. We love our athletes!

5 Good Minutes With Vivian Broderick

“Her Amazing Race!” One of Vivian Broderick’s favorite TV shows is “The Amazing Race.”

Vivian has experienced her own Amazing Races this past year as she

has discovered a love and a talent for running track and cross-country.

TIMES: Vivian, when did you first get excited about running?

Vivian: Probably in 6th grade when I was first able to compete

in a track meet.

TIMES: Do you have any runners that you admire?

Vivian: It would be Katie Flood. I have followed her career

while she has been competing at UW and the Olympic trials.

TIMES: Tell us about your XC championship last fall?

Vivian: It was the first time I had ever competed in XC so I did

not really know what to expect. I worked out last summer with

the Ultimate Warrior running club and coach Loran, so that

helped. When the season started it was pretty overwhelming to

line up for a race with so many people, but I just tried to stay

with the fastest people then beat them at the end. I guess that

worked, but I have a lot to learn about competitive running.

TIMES: What are you looking forward to in high school?

Vivian: I am excited to be at the same school as my cousin

Jeanne Gookin again. I also look forward to competing for a

spot on the varsity cross country team and learning from all of

the great runners that are currently there, while helping them

bring the state championship back to Dowling. I also look

forward to competing for the Dowling soccer team as well

TIMES: You and Catie Freeman seem to be great running

partners this season. Do you see you and Catie running

together on the same team next year?

Vivian: It would be great be on the same team she is a great

runner who pushes me and would help make others on the

team better as well.

Did you know?

Did you know that Vivian Broderick won the 2012 state XC 8th grade State Championship in 2012? Did you know that Vivian’s favorite song to listen to before competition is “Feel This Moment” by Pitbull, or anything by Mumford and Sons Did you know that Matt finished the Dam to Dam 5k as a third grader? Did you know that Matt’s favorite race is the 1500m? Did you know Vivian’s favorite thing about middle school track is running with her friends [running] in circles, and being able to be with them.

St. Augustin! The Royals of St. Augustin endured the cold and came

away from Monday’s meet with some new experiences and

victories. Starting with the 1500, sisters Kiki and Mia Levy ran

a tremendous race with Kiki running her first 1500 in a time of

6:04 and Mia coming in about 20 seconds later. Noah Smith

ran a gutsy 1500 going out with the pack and shaving 20

seconds off his PR. In the hurdles, Ellen Strittmatter continues

to improve placing 2nd with a PR. Mckenna Clark ran the

hurdles for the first time and placed in the top 3 in her heat.

Most of the 5 and 6 graders ran the 400 and realized it was

“not that bad”. Max Beh ran a smoking fast 400 as well as

Olya Safris in the girls division. Jack Caliguiri bravely endured

the 400 overcoming stomach pains to place 4th in his heat.

In the field events, Annie Flood gave the discus a try and had

a lot of fun. Regan Damge performed well in the shot, proving

to be a consistent and dedicated thrower. Rocky Greenslade

tried the high jump for the first time and placed 2nd.

The sprint medley was where the Royals shined. The girls A

relay (Greenslade, Haus, Strittmatter , Nelson) dominated the

whole race winning their heat. The B,C.D,E, and F relays

proved our depth. Running in these relays,Pierick, Flood,

Levy, Damge, Ingram, Thomas, Bening, Mote, Smith, Meier,

Ahmann, Kaufman, Mcateer, Scholz, Wilke deserve

recognition for sticking around on the cold evening. The boys

relays were just as exciting. The boys A (Caliguiri, Bocken,

Mcdonough, Beh) won their heat, but the B relay really showed

their mettle in a come from way behind victory ran in the dark.

Awesome job from Winter, Labrie, Melcher and Fry!!

Assumption!

The Assumption 5th

graders came through

again in grand style. The

boys relay team of Jordan

Robinson, Sam Paulin,

Pacey Moats and

Ben Wiese continues to

turn in strong

performances. The most

impressive performer of

the night, however,

was Savannah Lehrman,

another 5th grader, who

took it upon herself to

become the first 1500

meter competitor in our

school's history. She ran

remarkably well... and

now has a school record all her own. She also ran the

open 100 M and anchored the medley, giving her the

distinction of being the first Assumption runner to ever

compete in sprint, middle and long distance events in

the same meet.

The 5/6th graders are

enthusiastically

awaiting their chance

to compete again in

the final two meets.

Since we have the

smallest team, they

provide a significant

contribution to the

overall team effort.

Holy Family!

What an impressive finish to a fantastic season at

HFS!

Athletes improved their times. Some by as many as

20 seconds off their practice times! Impressive first

place finish in the 70m hurdles for 5th grader Amom

Deng. Look for him to be a fierce competitor when

he runs up in the championship meet.

Another impressive

finish was Daniel Ordaz

finishing the 400m dash

in 1:10. A season best

for him! Holy Family

ladies represented well

in the sprint medley. For

both teams A and B

hand offs were seamless

and everyone did their

best.

The night ended with big smiles and hive fives all

around! I am very proud of the Holy Family track

team!

St. Anthony’s! St. Anthony School had a lot of fun running in the cold on Monday’s

meet:) For the girls team, Kayla Swesey ran away with a 1st place finish

in the hurdles, a 2nd place finish in the 200 M Dash and a 3rd place finish

in the 100 M Dash. She was also a part of the 2nd place sprint medley

relay. McKenna Ackerman placed 3rd in the 400 M Dash and 1st in the

long jump – she is the younger sister of former St. Anthony hurdling

star Denice Ackerman. Anna Gorsche placed 1st in the shot put and

sisters Kelly Klinge and Taylor Klinge, both 5th graders, took 3rd and 4th

place. Kelly Klinge also placed 2nd in the discus throw. For the boys,

Joe Scavo placed 4th in the 1500 M Run and 5th grader Gino Busick

placed 3rd in the discus throw. Our team enjoys our workouts running

near the Des Moines River and Gray’s Lake. We look forward to

improving during the coming month.

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference. Living one day at a time, enjoying one moment at a time, accepting hardships as the pathway to peace, taking as Jesus did this sinful world as it is and not as I would have it. Trusting you will make all things right if I surrender to your will, that I might be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with you in the next. Amen”
