Dear Parents and Caregivers A belated Happy Mothers’ day to all you wonderful mums. I hope you had a great Sunday and were spoilt lots at least for one day of the year. The role you play in your children’s lives and of your family is vast and far reaching. Thank you for all you do. There is a discussion happening around New Zealand currently about the future of education and I think this is a really good thing. We are lucky in our country to have access to learning at all levels at a cost that most countries would envy. This does not mean we should sit back and it is very timely to have a look at lots of processes and systems not necessarily with a view to changing the lot but more to affirm that which is good and to look at what we might develop. There is a definite opportunity to spend more on school infrastructure (buildings and the like) and this is an area being considered. Additionally, funding to support those with learning difficulties, behavioural needs and those with disabilities are vital areas under consideration. There are others and ones you may have a personal interest in so do be involved where the opportunity arises, your input is valuable. Some of you may have struck the front gates being apparently locked as you come to school during the day. The main front gate and the Action Centre one are on timers and the magnetic lock kicks in during the day. These are the ones with the key pad on them. To gain entry when they are locked during the day is still possible and easy. Just look at the top of the post where the key pad is and you will see a round silver button. Push it, push the gate and it will swing open. This will not work however after the times stated on the signage on each. All other gates have a pull up release which works at any time during the day. Lastly, I have seen a rapid build-up of lost property already this term and it has only been two weeks. I would suggest checking and seeing if some of this is your child’s stuff and talking with them about the need to look after their gear if you find this is a regular thing. As a parent I know it can be very frustrating looking for your child’s clothes round home only to find much later they think they might have left it at school. As always named items are very much easier to return than those which are not. Have an awesome week Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

All 3 Pongakawa teams had a great start to the season, the year

7/8 teams had competitive losses and the year 5/6 had a solid

win. Great to see that the skills coached last season are still there

and a great effort from the new players. Good luck this week .

3.50 - 4.40pm Girls

4.20pm Boys Seniors

Hockey: Please ensure you bring your hockey gear on training

days regardless of weather.

Fun Sticks Yr 1 & 2 and some Yr 3’s Begins Saturday 19th May at the

Te Puke Intermediate from 9am - 10am

Mini Sticks Yr 3/4 (Rattlers) Played against the Omokoroa

Hurricanes on Saturday. The team played really well, especially those

who were playing hockey for the very first time!! It was great to see

the kids giving it a good go, and really enjoying it.

Sportsmanship was shown by Harper and Lucy who volunteered to

help the opposition as they had no reserves (and we had 5!). Their

coach and I had spoken during the first half, and I then put it to the

team to see who wanted to help out... pretty amazing of the girls to

offer, and they both played really well. Maia was the player of the

day (as voted by the supportive parents). And the final score was 4-3

to Omokoroa. Monday lunchtime training time.

Kiwi Sticks Yr 5/6, (Redwings) One grading game was a draw 1 all

and the second a loss 4-1. Wednesday lunchtime is training time.

Yr 7/8 Team had two grading games and won both against

Otumoetai and Tauranga Intermediates.

Please ensure that your child/ren have all of the gear that they

need for their sports activities for training and games, ie. mouth

guards. These can be purchased at the school office for $6 if any

student requires one.

With so many sports and after school activities

happening at present we need parents/caregivers to

advise us of changes to bus movements for your child

Please ensure that your child/ren have a spare pair of shorts and a t-shirt each day this term for doing cross country during class PE lessons.

Pause For Thought

Don’t become preoccupied with your child’s academic ability,

but instead teach them to sit with those sitting alone.

Teach them to be kind.

Teach them to offer help.

Teach them to be a friend to the lonely.

Teach them to encourage others.

Teach them to think about other people.

Teach them to share.

Teach them to look for the good.

This is how they will change the world.

Senior Technology Reminder Senior students have Technology each Friday. Whether it is woodworking, sewing or cooking they all require closed in footwear. Can you please ensure your child/ren are prepared for this each Friday before they arrive at school. Any unpaid Senior Tech Fees can be paid online or through the office. Thank you.

Junior and Middles Reserve Walk Unfortunately due to poor weather conditions today the

reserve walk for the Junior and Middles students has had to be postponed. A postponement date is yet to be confirmed.
