HAPPY NEW YEAR

2010

Welcome back everyone. I hope you all had a great break and enjoyed the festive season.

Watching the BBC News last evening, the weather in the UK , across Europe and America looks awful. Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! It

makes the occasional rain here feel insignificant.

We had a busy end to last term with concerts and performances across the whole school. I hope you enjoyed all of these

events as much as I did. We have many very talented and enthusiastic students who performed really well. Well done.

The start of a new term, and a new year, gives the opportunity to continue the hard work started last term and make even

greater strides towards our goals; SES provides the best education possible to all of its students.

I am pleased to welcome two new teachers to the school:

Mr David Main - Chemistry and Science;

Ms Shereen Razvi - Science.

I have a meeting on Sunday to assess the progress on the new building and will let you have an update next week. I believe

we are still waiting final approval of plans but will confirm this with you.

Thank you for your support.

Networking/Work Experience

A reminder to Year 10 students and parents, about

Work Experience from 6th

- 10th

June;

It is always more enjoyable if you find a placement of

your own. So over the holidays, do ask around for a

placement.

Parents if you are able to offer a placement, I would be

grateful to have the details. Would you please give me

the following information:

Contact name, and number. Name and nature of

business. Number of placements being offered.

Thanking you in advance.

Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

Heather de Souza

Student Council Quiz

On the last day of term, the Student Council organised

and hosted a general knowledge quiz for all the students

in the secondary school. It was divided into two age

groups with four categories of questions ranging from

sports to ancient history to fun facts about the teachers,

and turned out to be an enjoyable, stress-relieving end

to the term. We also sold lolly bags in order to raise

money for the new school charity, the Sharjah Centre

for Humanitarian Services, who will be coming to speak

to the students at the beginning of this year.

Mintaka Angell Year 12 Student Representative

Spanish Club

We are pleased to announce that the Spanish Club will

commence on Monday 11th

January. The Primary Club

will be from 2.00pm to 3.00pm and will cost Dhs500 and

the Secondary Club will be from 3.00pm to 4.30pm and

will cost Dhs700 per term. If you have not already

enrolled your child in the class but would like a place

please contact the school office.

Parking – Secondary

Please use the lay by for dropping off and collecting

your children.

The police were monitoring this earlier this week and

they were not pleased with drivers who park on the

road outside the lay by, especially those facing the

wrong way.

Christmas performances

We are happy to report that we raised a total of Dhs

3,200 during the primary performances. This amount

will be divided equally between the two charities Cystic

Fibrosis and All As One.

Primary Clubs

A list of activities was sent out with pupils on Tuesday.

Your child should have selected two or more clubs and

informed their class teachers of their choices. We will do

our best to fit your child into at least one activity of

his/her choice. Please note that, next week, your child

will bring home letters confirming the clubs he/she will

be able to attend. The Art Club will commence on

Sunday 10th

January, all other clubs will commence on

the 17th

January.

Uniform Primary

As the mornings are now quite chilly, please ensure that

your child is wearing his/her uniform jumper/cardigan.

Children are expected to wear the correct uniform. All

items can be purchased from ZAKs shop in Deira, near

Deira City Centre. Maps are available from the school

office.

Uniform Secondary

All students in Key Stage 3 and 4 (Year 7 to 11) have

received a letter this week regarding uniform and dress

code in Secondary. Could we ask that parents please

make sure that they have received a copy of the letter?

It reminds students of the importance of presentation

and appearance and outlines the reasons for having

such a code. We are very grateful to parents for their

support in ensuring that our students are presentable

and neat at all times.

Collection

May I remind parents that children should be collected

promptly at the end of the school day. The collection

points for the children from Years 1 to 6 are as follows:

Years 1 & 2: Outside the rear entrance.

Years 3 & 4: Outside Classroom 4PS

Years 5 & 6: Outside Classroom 5JS

Year 7 Castle Competition

Before the Christmas holidays the Year 7 students made

models of castles for a competition. On Wednesday 16th

December the students brought in their castles and put

them in the history room. Mrs Simpson, Mrs O’Mahony

and Mrs Egan judged the castles and let the Year 7

students know the results on Thursday 17th

December.

The castles were all different, there was some made out

of all sorts of things such as cardboard, stones and even

food! Of course some castles stood out more than

others but, they were all brilliant.

It has been a good start to the term so far and back to normal after the break.

There have been internal examinations as well GCE AS and A2 examinations. The A-level examinations carry on until early

February.

I attended a new building meeting and found that we are waiting for final approval from SEWA for water, then final technical

approval.; if all goes well, this should be granted in five or six weeks.

Please be reminded about parking on the road outside both primary and secondary. Thank you.

We have some new recycling bins, kindly donated.

After the changes, I notice that SUBWAY is going well in secondary at lunchtime

It has been suggested to me that I review the weekly Chronicle to have a very brief and factual weekly newsletter and a once

a month or half term longer Chronicle with photographs etc. I would appreciate any comments on this.

Thank you for your support.

We have been advised by ZAKS that they will be closing

their store in Deira on the 10th

access. We are also pleased to advise that ZAKS have

Primary Rugby League

This week saw the start of our Rugby Team Training sessions for Year 3

to Year 6 in preparation for the start of the Primary Rugby League at the

end of this month. We had so many students interested in training for

each team that more of our Senior Sports Leaders had to be ‘employed’

to coach the players. Players were split into groups and put through a

series of drills to develop their skills and understanding of the game.

Can I remind parents that Year 4 to Year 6 players must wear gum

shields as they are training to play full-contact whereas Year 3 will

be playing the non-contact version: Tag Rugby.

Senior Netball League

The New Year kicked off with both Year 7 and Year 9 playing their first

league matches of 2010 at Cambridge International School. It was the

Year 7’s first ever netball match in the Dubai Netball League so there

was lots of nervous anticipation before the first whistle was blown. The

Year 9s’on the other hand have been playing as a team for quite a few

years and led, as ever, by their Team Captain Harini, played their socks

off to walk away with a convincing win over CIS and 4 league points.

Nerves seemed to get the better of the Year 7 girls and although they

didn’t win their match they played with plenty of enthusiasm and effort.

With a little more practice and game time, I am sure things will eventually

come together for them. Well done to all the girls involved.

As you can see from the photos below, some of the girls were very happy

with the result.

THOSE GENTLE REMINDERS ‘AGAIN’

PE Kit – Please make every effort to ensure that you pack all of your PE

kit, including white socks for every lesson. Bring a small towel,

water bottle and roll-on deodorant. No spray cans please. We do have a

small selection of ‘unattractive and totally un-cool’ spare kit that we will

issue to anyone who forgets to bring kit. You have been warned!

Page 15: NEWSLETTER

Water Bottles – Please remember to bring a water bottle to PE Lessons

and after school clubs.

Injury and/or sickness – We encourage all students to be involved in

every PE lesson, therefore if for whatever reason your son/daughter is

unable to participate in PE we would expect a note of explanation to be

handed to the teacher before the start of the lesson. Any student

unable to participate in the practical aspect of the lesson should still

bring PE kit as they will be expected to take on a less physically

demanding role such as referee or coach.

Lost Property – If you leave something in the PE Dept then there is a

good chance it will end up in the lost property basket. This is emptied at

the beginning of every week and taken to the nurses’ room in the Primary

school. Please do not bring anything of value into school.

If you need to contact the PE Dept staff for any reason here’s how:

Next week will see Sharjah English School students, parents and staff

compete in the 2010 Dubai Marathon 3km / 10km event. I hope training has

been going well. Below are a few tips to help you prepare for the big day.

1 – Organise

The morning of the 22nd will mean an early start so be sure to pack your bag

the night before and remember to set your alarm!!

2 – Equipment

Don’t forget safety pins (for your race number), clean dry clothes for after

the race (including socks), towel, plenty of water, a light snack to re-

energise. For example, a banana.

3 – Breakfast

It is really important that you eat breakfast. You may not feel like eating so

early in the morning but it is essential and preferably at least 1.5 hours

before the race.

4 – Diet

For 10km runners the week leading up to the run will mean you need to stock

up and store carbohydrates. Pasta, Potatoes and rice are your friends here.

5 – Laces, laces, laces

Due to nerves, a common problem for some runners is that they tie their

trainers too tight. This will only restrict circulation.

6 – At the start

You will get many people going off too fast and getting carried away in the

excitement. Stick to a pace that you have been training for or feel

comfortable with. Start off slow if you need to. You can always speed up

later.

DUBAI MARATHON CHALLENGE

UPDATE

Page 17: NEWSLETTER

7 – Warm up/down

15-20 minutes before and after the race you will need to do some very light

jogging and some light stretching. This will help you prevent injury, reduce

stiffness and increase your performance. Ask your son/daughter to show you

some stretching exercises.

And finally ENJOY . Enjoy the whole experience of being involved in such a

large event.

Sharjah English School is trying to raise money for Wateraid and Emirates

Arthritis foundation. Two charities where any amount of money donated will

make a significant difference to those less fortunate. Attached is a sponsor

form or if you would like to make a donation just fill in the form and hand it

in at the main school reception.

Next week I will update you on where SES will set up a meeting place so we

can keep all our bags together etc.

The winners from the last training period were:

7/8 9/10 11/12/13

Adam Master Chris Lambert Kyle Main

Zaid Marfatia Kleri Tanteles Edric Cate

Ivan Malkov Toby Oakeley

The final round will be after the 22nd with overall prizes given.

We are looking to hold an in school sponsored walk to compliment this

Charity event. If anyone can help by donating water/drinks to the school

that would be a great.

Thanks
