Automotive Technology Update

With the assistance of several state grants and funding opportunities, Forbes Road CTC was able to greatly enhance the Automotive Technology program and assure that its students were equipped with the latest technologies the industry has to offer. New lift racks were installed to replace outdated and worn out racks. The lifts will allow students to work on many different sizes of vehicles safely. A new brake lathe and diagnostic equipment was procured and integrated into the program. This will allow students to gain academic skills, industry skills, improve NOCTI, and be prepared for industry certification tests including AYES, NATEF, Certified Emissions Inspector, or Certified Safety Inspector. The new vehicle alignment equipment will provide Forbes Road CTC the opportunity to emulate a state of the art automotive shop by affording students the ability to work with current industry technologies. Lastly, the new biodiesel engine will enable students the exposure to cleaner fuel possibilities as well as the incorporation of green technologies that are molding the future of the automotive industry.

Forbes Road CTC Second Annual 5K

The 2nd Annual Forbes Road CTC 5K to benefit the Scholarship Fund is scheduled for April 11, 2015 at Boyce Park. SAVE THE DATE! More information to come.

Forbes Road Career and Technology Center’s Machine Tool Technology program is moving forward into the 21st century to include Engineering in the program. The principles and theories of science, engineering and mathematics to solve technical problems in research, development and manufacturing will be included in the curriculum. Students will learn construction, quality control, inspecting products and processes, conducting tests, and collecting data skills. By integrating the concept of STEM into our Machine Tool Technology classroom, we are addressing the proliferation of technology into the field of robotics, engineering and any math or science-based field. The essential functions of how things operate have typically remained the same throughout the history of machine tools, but the tools and technology have evolved to incorporate STEM principles and foundations by integrating them fully and assimilating them seamlessly. In order to ensure that students are prepared for the jobs of tomorrow, STEM principles help to engage students and practically implement technologies that will shape the path of tomorrow. A3Dprinterandscannerwillbeaddedtotheprogramin the 2014-15 school year. This printer is closely related to CNC and CAD machines. It will be used to train students as Computer Controlled Machine Tool Operators, Numerical Tool and Process Control Programmers, and Extruding and Drawing Machine Setters/Operators. The printers render designs of objects drafted by CAD/CAM software by extruding plastic or metal. This is a little different from the manual lathes and grinders that are in a machine shop. The scanner is used for reverse engineering, a few industriesthatusethisproductare:rapidprototyping, inspection, design, medical fields, footwear and orthotics. The scanner will enhance and expose students to new techniques in part inspection. The scanner, along with the3Dprinter,allowsForbesstudentstomaintainacompetitive edge in manufacturing technologies. The ability of our students to be familiar and operate advanced prototyping tools meet the required skills necessary for today’s job market.

This data collected through Survey Monkey is invaluable in helping to further shape curriculum and prepare our current students for what they will encounter in entry-level positions upon graduation.

5K Run/Walk grant supported the race by providing a minimal registration fee for Forbes’ student who participated in the activities. The 5K Run Walk Event was a fun, healthy positive event for students, staff and the community. Many of our technical programs helped prepare for the event. Students worked on advertising, metals, trophies, emergency services, children’s’ area, databases and food for the event.
