3 rd July 2020 NEWSLETTER LETTER FROM ROYALTY We got a huge surprise in the post this week! We never imagined that news of the West Wight Coronavirus Support Hub would reach royalty. It is really humbling to be acknowledged by their Royal Highnesses, the Earl and Countess of Wessex. We continue to provide support to those most in need in our community. Call us on 01983 752168 if you need support. We can help with shopping, phone calls, hot meal delivery, prescriptions meal delivery, prescriptions and more! We must say a massive thank you once again to each and every one of our volunteers, this has been a success because of you! I never thought I would be so excited about writing risk assessments! But it’s an indication of the stage we’re at with our planning for re-opening of the building and it does feel like such a positive time. We have some staff back working together in the building now and it’s fantastic to see some of the team together again. It’s making us feel like there is a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. The team have been working extremely hard to get everything in place and we will be issuing guidance and information on the new rules and procedures very shortly. Obviously we still don’t know when that day will be but we really hope it will be the middle of July. We’re planning a phased opening, with certain parts of our programme being available from Day 1, but others being introduced at a later date. We will review each week, based on how successful each activity has been. The first week we’re open will be for members only and we will require everyone to be patient as we find our feet and staff learn how to operate in a quite different working environment. We are determined that the Centre will be as safe as possible. We can’t wait to see you all again! “WE’RE MOVING IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION” Clare Griffin

LETTER FROM ROYALTY We got a huge surprise in the post this week!

We can help with shopping, phone calls, hot meal delivery, prescriptions and more!

HOMELESS ARTIST CARVES

FOR COVID HARDSHIP A homeless artist is to auction a stunning 170cm (5’7”) carving of a narwhal tusk to raise money for the West Wight Coronavirus Support Hub, supporting vulnerable people throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. David Wallace, whose work will be shown at the Royal Academy of Arts’ Summer Exhibition this autumn, spent two months carving the tusk from a fallen oak branch found at Fort Victoria Country Park, near Yarmouth.

All proceeds from the auction will be split between the West Wight Coronavirus Support Hub and the Our Place Community Café, both of which are based at West Wight Sports & Community Centre. The team has assisted approximately 400 people suffering hardship as a result of the pandemic (including David), by supplying hot meals, collecting medicines, shopping, providing transport and even offering a friendly chat. Brading-based HRD Auction Rooms has generously provided its online auction platform commission-free for the sale, which is to take place on the 15th July 2020.

David became a popular figure at Fort Victoria Country Park in 2018 when he spent the summer months carving a fallen tree on the beach with a myriad of real and mythical sea creatures, much to the delight of local children and holidaymakers. David’s work is grounded in the philosophy that nature is to be enjoyed by everyone, and the cycles of nature

everyone, and the cycles of nature provide him with the raw materials to turn into objects that are also to be enjoyed by everyone.

Tragically, the beautiful tree sculpture was stolen just as it was finished at the end of the summer, with all evidence at the scene suggesting that it had been chain sawed off at its roots and towed away by boat. In the summer of 2019 David carved another tree which is currently on display in front of the fort. It was this second beach sculpture which caught the eye of local Freshwater artist Becca Cameron, who immediately recognised that David’s work was good enough for the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in London. From photographs, the Academy selected a pair of crutches that David carved while teaching his craft at the Riverside Centre in Newport. This carving represents a significant moment in David’s life history. The crutches helped David out of the wheelchair that he had been using since suffering a serious motorcycle accident in his youth.

Details of the auction can be found on HRD Auction Rooms’ website. The listing will appear online one week before the auction at the-salesroom.com, and bids can be placed via telephone, live at the auction, and online. Online bidders will need to register at the-salesroom.com.

We must say a huge thank you to Jane at Scoops in Yarmouth for donating 10% of ice cream sales to us for sales made on Fridays since reopening.

Jane has raised £30.25 and added an extra £10 to that herself.

We know how tough it is for small business out there at the moment so have to say an extra big thanks for Jane helping raise funds for us during this time.

Don't forget to pop by to Scoops when you are next in Yarmouth for a friendly face and tasty treat!

THANK YOU
