Newsletter – October 2019 What a busy month we have had since our last newsletter. As I write I am sitting looking over a beautiful African River flowing with water and full of fish. Many of our South African farmers would be envious as the drought continues its stranglehold over Southern Africa and the heat waves threaten further losses of crops and livestock. If you can, please support your local farmers. There is a food collection drive for farmers in the Cape. The details are on Facebook. This week, I have trained 21 delegates in Northern Botswana who have been engaged in the theory of Tilapia farming. The max temperature of 40 degrees did not dampen the enthusiasm or participation of the trainees. We also covered many of the “Hard Lessons” of fish farming and the Lessons from the University of Hard Knocks; as well as sharing knowledge, experience and stories.

Newsletter – October 2019

What a busy month we have had since our last newsletter.

The project in Northern Botswana is one of two and hopefully of many more. In order to feed people fish in the SADC region there will have to be the development of large-scale farms that will feed the billion people in Africa. Thanks to the Botswana Government for their support and for realising that farming of Tilapia is a way to eradicate poverty in the county.

We hope that by being actively engaged with our clients from the first call/email we receive, followed by a farm tour and training, we can assist you in building a fish farm that will contribute towards food production in the continent

Training

Training was carried out in mid-September for a father and daughter team, planning to farm in the Free State. We wish them the best of luck with their projects in their community.

There will be two training sessions in November:

25 – 28 November;

And then the last session for 2019 will be from:

9 – 12 December

We would be grateful for feedback from those students who have been on the Wet hands training week.

Stocks

Breeding has been good, and fry are progressing well, Eskom have announced load shedding which means sleepless nights and long days. We have taken a decision to go off grid for the next 20 years and we are in discussions with partners to achieve this as quickly as possible. As many of you who have visited us will know we are part of a much larger and growing community, so we need to meet the needs of the future development of this community.

Should you require Niloticus stocks please request the permit information from us

Please encourage your children to fish and stock your farm dams and ponds and invite your friends to bring their children to fish. The future of our natural environment is in their hands.

If successful, the venture could produce annual revenues accounting for eight per cent of the

country’s GDP, said Pure Salmon in a press release.

Located in the Butha-Buthe Highland region of Lesotho, the farm is due to be completed by 2023. It

will generate more than 250 full time jobs in Lesotho and will be powered by 100 per cent

renewable energy from the adjacent hydroelectric power station.
