Apart from providing the basic necessities of life, its role in the country's economic growth is significant. The Indian Textile industry contributes about 14 per cent to industrial production; 4 per cent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP); 17 per cent to its export earnings; and is a source of direct employment for over 35 million people, which makes it the second largest provider of employment after agriculture. Abundant raw materials, healthy foreign direct investments (FDI) and a government willing to invest ensures a bright future for India's textile sector. Recently CCEA has approved the launching of new integrated Processing Development Scheme (IPDS) with total cost of Rs 500 Crore during 12th Five Year Plan. Having all above healthy practices to upgrade textile industry, what about the health of Textile Education in India? Is the Textile Education and course curriculum is adequate as per the need of industries? The time has come to carryout research in textile education system. There is a need of survey to match the industry activity and curriculum related to textile manufacturing and processing. The need of technical man power required to run the industry and textile graduates produced in country should be fit for each other's requirement. A critical study is required in this regards. An innovative module is expected so that it will be more relevant to the field. The industry –Institute interaction bond should be strong. It is difficult process to procure expensive textile machineries for training at educational institute. However an alternative like simulation type of study of entire textile process is a need of time to well- equipped textile institute and live demonstration using virtual mode of study be adopted during course delivery besides traditional approach of having in plant training. EDITORIAL

The Indian Textile Industry counts among the leading textile industries in the world. Apart from providing the basic necessities of life, its role in the country's economic growth is significant. The Indian Textile industry contributes about 14 per cent to industrial production; 4 per cent to the country's gross domestic product (GDP); 17 per cent to its export earnings; and is a source of direct employment for over 35 million people, which makes it the second largest provider of employment after agriculture. REPORT OF10TH INTERNATIONAL & 68TH ALL INDIA TEXTILE CONFERENCE

Jointly organized by The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit & Central Office

On the occasion of Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit, the 10th International & 68th All India Textile Conference was organized by TAI, Mumbai Unit jointly with Central Office on 30th November & 1st December 2012, Hotel ITC Maratha, Sahara, Andheri (E), Mumbai – 400 099. The theme of the Conference was “World Textiles – Challenges towards Excellence”.

The Textile Association (India) conferred the Honorary Membership on Mr. Dilip Jiwrajka, Managing Director, Alok Industries Limited for his valuable Contribution to the textile industry. Mr. K. L. Vidurashwatha was awarded fellow of Textile Association (FTA) and Mr. V. C. Gupte, Chairman, TAI, Mumbai Unit was awarded Service Gold Medal. Mr. Sudhish Aggarwala of TAI, Delhi Unit and Mr. H. S. Patel of TAI, Ahmedabad Unit were awarded Service Mementos for their meritorious services to the Textile Association. The Industrial Excellence Award was conferred on Mr. R. K. Vij, President, TAI, Delhi Unit. The TAI, Ahmedabad Unit received the Best Unit Trophy from the group of larger units third time consecutively. The book “Fundamentals and Advances in Knitting Technology” written by Mr. Sadhan Chandra Ray, NIRJAFT, Kolkata was selected for Best Technical Book Award sponsored by Century Textiles & Industries Ltd..

Mr. A. B. Joshi, Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India was the Chief Guest and Mr. R. D. Udeshi, President – Polyester Chain, Reliance Industries Ltd. delivered the keynote address. Mr. Rajnikant S. Bachkaniwala, Chairman, India ITME Society was the Guest of Honour. Mrs. Jaya Row, Founder of Vedanta Vision was the Chief Guest at the Valedictory Session.

In all 16 papers from eminent Speakers from India & abroad were presented during the conference. All the Papers received very high response from the participants.

There were two sessions of the Panel Discussions. The theme of the first Panel Discussion Session was “Denim Industry in India” which was moderated by Mr. Avinash Mayekar, Managing Director & CEO, Suvin Advisors Pvt. Ltd. The Panel comprised Mr. Aamir Akhtar, CEO – Denim (Fabrics), Arvind Limited, Mr. S. N. Kuchhal, Director, Etco Denim Pvt. Ltd., Dr. Mirza Ikhtiar Baig, Chairman, Baig Group, Industrialist and Federal Advisor on Textiles to Govt. of Pakistan and Mr. M. D. Kanitkar, Werner International.

The second Panel Discussion Session was moderated by Mr. Ashish Amin, Ex. CEO, S. Kumars. The theme of this Panel Discussion session was “Role of Supply Chain Management in Textile Industry”. The panel comprised of Mr. Manohar Samuel, Jt. President (Strategic Marketing), Grasim Industries Ltd., Mr. Ashish Dhir, Managing Partner, WISEDGE Consulting, Dr. J. Arthur Prem, Ex. Commissioner of Customs, Mr. Vilas Gharat, Managing Director, Gharat & Associates.

In the last session Dr. P. R. Roy, Management Consultant (Textiles) gave his impressions about the conference, and brought out some of the key factors to achieve excellence in the competitive world.

The two-day Conference was attended by over 500 participants and it was a grand success.

InDIAtEX 2013Textile Exhibition – Fibre to Fashion

The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit successfully organized INDIATEX 2013 Exhibition at Vapi (Gujarat) from 18th to 20th October 2013. This exhibition was organized in a very professional manner with around 90 distinguished exhibitors from all over the country exhibited at the event. This exhibition was supported by Textile Commissioner, Ministry of Textiles, Govt. of India and iNDEXTb, Govt. of Gujarat was the State Partner of this exhibition.

The exhibition covered the entire spectrum of the textile industry from Fibre to Fashion. Mumbai Unit gave the excellent opportunity to the technologists and technology service providers to come under one roof to provide good platform for mutual advantage and commercial interaction.

The inaugural function of the exhibition was organized in the VIA Auditorium. The Chief Guest of this function was Dr. Chandan Chatterjee, Director, CED & Head (Project & technology) iNDEXTb, Govt. of Gujarat who inaugurated the exhibition at VIA ground. The Guest of Honour were Mr. Rajnikant Backhakaniwala, Director, Palod Himson Machines Pvt. Ltd. and Mr. Diven G. Dembla, President, ITAMMA & Managing Director, Precision Rubber Industries Pvt. Ltd.

Mr. C. Bose, President of TAI, Mumbai Unit welcomed the gathering and said that Mumbai Unit was happy to organize this at Vapi which is the financial & industrial districts of the state of Gujarat.

Mr. G. V. Aras, Exhibition Chairman expressed his views about the industrial belt starting from Tarapur, Umargam right up to Surat, which is buzzing with manufacturing activities in different verticals textile value chain. He said for these reasons the organizing committee took the decision to hold this exhibition at Vapi.

Mr. Haresh Parekh, Convenor of this Exhibition said that IndiaTex 2013 is an exhibition for suppliers, buyers, distributors and manufacturers of fabric and textile producers. He said that organizing exhibition was a big challenge as the Mumbai Unit doing it for the first time. He thanked all the exhibitors and supporters for their kind support.

Mr. Rajnikant Backhaniwala congratulated Mumbai Unit for organizing this exhibition in the fastly growing industrial belt in the state of Gujarat. He also cautioned the organizers in respect of organizing exhibition as it is a very difficult task and needs lot of manpower and efforts.

Mr. Diven Dembla thanked Mumbai Unit for giving ITAMMA to be part of this exhibition. He explained the important role played by ITAMMA in the development of the textile industry at various levels from accessories to machineries.

Dr. Chandan Chatterjee, remembering his college days since when he was associated with the Textile Association. He assured all the participants and the exhibitors for all kind of assistance from the Govt. of Gujarat in setting up their business in the state. He suggested that healthy competitions amongst the industries will change the scenario for the development of the country.

Mr. A. V. Mantri, Hon. Secretary proposed the Vote of Thanks.

The 3 day exhibition was visited by technocrats, entrepreneurs and owners from various parts of the country. The visitors and exhibitors appreciated Mumbai Unit for providing good opportunity for business networking.

Shri H. N. Asher senior member of the Mumbai Unit expired on 27th November 2013 at the age of 77 years.

He was Jt. Hon. Secretary from 1973 to 1976 and Hon. Secretary of The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit during 1976-77.

We pray to the God to give everlasting peace to the departed soul and convey our condolences to his family.

Shri P. C. Gupta very senior member of The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit passed away on 25th November 2013. He served The Textile Association (India) in many capacities and was very closely associated with Mumbai Unit. He was Hon. Treasurer from 1975-76 to 1976-77 and Vice Chairman from 1977-78 to 1983-84. Shri Gupta was Governing Council Member of the Mumbai Unit from1977-78 to 1984-85. He was awarded Service Memento in the year 1982.

He also served the TAI, Central Office as Hon. Treasurer in the year 1983-85 and took keen interest in coordinating various activities organized by the units.

The Text i le Associat ion ( India) , Mumbai Unit has lost a multidimensional member. We convey our heartfelt condolences to the Gupta family and pray to the Almighty to bestow peace to the departed soul.

Shri M. D. Dixit very senior members & Past President of The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit expired on 21st December 2013. Shri Dixit served The Textile Association (India) in various capacities and was the President of Mumbai Unit during 1985-87. He was awarded Service Memento in the year 1997. He was very closely associated with The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit. Shri Dixit was Governing Council Member of Mumbai Unit during the year 1971, 1972, 1987-89 to 1999-2001. He was the Zonal Co-ordinator from 1991-93 to 1993-95 for The Textile Association (India), Central Office.

The Textile Association (India), Mumbai Unit has lost a guide and philosopher due to the death of Shri Dixit. His advice to the Mumbai Unit will be missing henceforth. We pray to the Almighty to bestow peace to the departed soul.
