The Magnificat
This prayer from scripture expresses Mary’s joy and wonder at her role in the mystery of the Incarnation.
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit rejoices in God my Saviorfor he has looked with favor on his lowly servant. From this day all generations will call me blessed: the Almighty has done great things for me, and holy is his Name.He has mercy on those who fear himin every generation. He has shown the strength of his arm, he has scattered the proud in their conceit. He has cast down the mighty from their thrones, and has lifted up the lowly. He has filled the hungry with good things, and the rich he has sent away empty. He has come to the help of his servant Israelfor he remembered his promise of mercy, the promise he made to our fathers, to Abraham and his children forever.”
(Lk 1: 46-55)

DEFENDING THE FAITH Do Catholics worship Mary? Does the Bible even say we should “honor Mary?”
To worship Mary would be a grave sin. Worship is reserved for God alone. However, in Luke’s Gospel Elizabeth declared “Blessed are you among women.” Mary herself knew she would be honored by future Christians when she said, “all generations shall call me blessed.” (Luke 1: 48)
Catholics venerate Mary. Some people mistake that for worshipping her, but it’s not. The Mass is our worship and in it we worship God alone. Mary knew that she would be called “blessed” because she carried Jesus, the Savior, in her womb.
