Newsletter Article for June 2016
Dear friends, It is difficult for me to think that this is the last newsletter article that I will be writing to you. Once again I want to thank you for your hospitality and care. You are a wonderful church family. Take good care of your new pastor, and of one another – love, even as God in Christ has loved you! I woke in the early morning. It is part of my body rhythm. I am able to fall asleep within a couple minutes of laying down, but then God will wake me up to talk with me… and it is usually early morning.
God and I were to have a discussion about the word “trying”. Janet and I were on our way to ‘sit’ Alayna – now one year old. She is a delightful gal! But sometimes, she can be trying. My grandkids would tell you that as it is getting late in the day that gramps gets ‘grumpy’ – that means trying! They have already become experts at either skating around it, or becoming trying themselves! You get the picture?
Well, then, God and I went to thinking about another definition. The Apostle Paul in writing to letter to the Hebrews wrote: “Therefore let us also… lay aside every weight and sin that clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus…” I think Paul was saying: “Keep on trying!” So on the other side of this whole thing is the sense of ‘keeping on keeping on.” You know… the perseverance of running water that, in time, makes grand and awesome canyons! You know… the perseverance of strengthening ourselves with a faith that
will not fail! Then I did a scripture search on the word ‘trying’ – that is, once I woke and was underway! Neither of these definitions appear in the New Testament. The only references are about Jesus … and various persons and powers that were intent on ‘trying Jesus’. Like in the Devil taking Jesus to the wilderness. Like in the Phari-sees’ continual attempt to ‘trip him up’. Like in the agony God put Jesus through in the Gethsemane garden. Then the light bulb came on! God spoke in a new way. “Glenn, look at this… in every situation you have the capacity to see the situation in one of two ways. You can receive it as a ‘trying circumstance’ and begin to build approaches that are frustrating, defensive, isolating, etc.. Or you have the opportunity to see what is in front of you as a challenge to use God’s transforming power in you through the Spirit to ‘run the race’, to ‘enjoy the moment’. All this” God said, “is a moment of trial. Sometimes evil desire presses you. Sometimes I am trying you. Sometimes it is more complex than you can readily see.” EACH MOMENT IN LIFE IS A RESURRECTION MOMENT … an opportunity for transformational new life! God’s grace… Pastor Glenn

Thanks to all those who are bringing in shoes for the Shoe Drive . So far we have just over 100 pairs. The last day to bring your shoes (any condition) to church is Sunday, June 5. They will be delivered to Annual Conference later that week.
Sewing Circle will meet on Monday, June 6 and Monday, June 13, from 7-9 pm in the Ed. Bldg. All are welcomed to attend sewing experience or not.
There will be a Kid's Sewing Day on Wednesday, June 22, from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm in the Ed. Bldg. Please contact Janet Black, [email protected], to register. We are planning a sewing project and provide lunch.

Outreach
June is our month to provide desserts for our friends at the South Butler County Meals-On-Wheels program, based at the Glade Run Presbyterian Church. There is a sign-up sheet at the back of the church for you to volunteer to make and deliver 4-5 dozen servings of dessert on any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday in June. Desserts need to be delivered, around the back of Glade Run church, by 9 am on your day. Cookies, cakes, brownies, sweet beads, or bar cookies are welcome (just no sticky icings, please.)Additionally, anyone wishing to contribute sugar-free desserts is welcome to take a donation to the church at any time-these desserts are frozen and taken out as needed at the Meals-On-Wheels.
Special thanks to Michele and Rick Baker, Janet Black, Eleanor Hackett, Barb Mickey, Shirley Osborne and Esther Rea for participating in Adopt-A-Road in May - Airport Road never looked better!

Thank you to Cub Scout Troop 53 for planting the beautiful flowers around the church property!

NIXON (Blessed Beginnings) PRESCHOOL
We'd like to send a big thank you to everyone who participated in our 5K FUNdraiser on May 14! Even though the weather didn't cooperate, we think everyone still had a great time! From business sponsors, 5K participants and Chinese auction tickets, we were able to raise over $3600...a BIG success! Thank you!
Our school year has ended and we're looking ahead into next year. We still have some spots left in both the M/W/F Pre-K class and the T/Th Preschool class. Call 724-586-7372 to schedule a tour or to get more information. We're excited to announce the addition of Missy Shiever to our teaching staff! Mrs. Shiever will be teaching the T/Th class (with Carlynn Evans as the Assistant teacher). Welcome Missy!
2014-2015 Audit Reports
The audits for 2014 and 2015 were completed on May 12,2016 by the Auditing Committee, consisting of
Linda Bodesheim, Lorry Donaldson, and Donna Bryant. There were no significant discrepancies found.
Audit results have been given to the Finance Committee and the District Office. A copy is filed in the
Church office and can be reviewed by any church member.
While conducting the audit, several issues did come to light, however, that the committee felt needed
addressed. A report outlining the committee’s recommendations was presented to Council at the May 12,
2016, meeting and was approved. (For a complete listing, see Council minutes.) The Finance Committee
will work with the various committee chairs to see the approved changes are implemented.
One item that needs special attention concerns the health of the Church’s finances. From 1/1/14 through
12/31/15, our expenses were $58,087 higher than our income (specifically a $46,916 loss for 2014 and a
$11,171 loss for 2015). As a result, our operating funds balance fell from $103,345 to $47,421.
(Note: some of these funds are restricted, and we are working to identify those amounts.) The
recommendations include a signed requisition by any person requesting reimbursement along with
approval by the appropriate committee chair (where applicable); review for legitimacy of all expenses by
the treasurer before checks are cut; and clearer report of financial statements to Council.
Partially as a result of the audit findings, a moratorium has been placed on spending for all but emergency
and/or routine, ongoing expenses (payroll, taxes, utilities, etc.)
