Issue 9 - Weeks 17 to 20 www.oliverhouse.org.uk 15th
February 2019
FROM THE HEADMASTER'S DESK
Dear Parents,
We have a number of exciting activities planned around
World Book Day when we return after the February
half term. On Monday 25th February we have the author
and illustrator Karin Littlewood visiting Oliver House.
Karin will give a talk to the children about her work and
then run a series of practical workshops for each year
group.
On Thursday 7th March, we will be celebrating World
Book Day and we encourage all of our children to
come to school dressed as a character from their
favourite book. There will be prizes for the best
costumes in each year group.
On World Book Day we will be running a creative
writing competition with prizes for the best story in
each class. Our older children will also be reading to
younger year groups during the day. It is sure to be a
fun-filled day and a reminder to us all of the importance
of reading in our children’s development.
It has been a busy and successful half term and the
children are now ready for a well-deserved rest. I hope
that you all have a wonderful holiday and I look forward
to welcoming the children back to school on Monday
25th February.
Best wishes,
Mr Rob Farrell
Headmaster

clothing to keep warm during these first few months of
the year. The following alerts may apply: RED,
AMBER & GREEN. Please refer to the Parents'
Handbook on our website www.oliverhouse.org.uk for
further details. A ClarionCall will be sent to parents in
the event of school closure.
UNIFORM LABELLING
There are a large number of unlabelled uniform items
that are found in lost property each week. Please could
we ask parents to ensure that all items are labelled
clearly with their child’s name. A good option that you
might like to consider is using pre-printed labels. These
can be found at www.stevensons.co.uk
WORLD BOOK DAY
On Thursday 7th March 2019 we will be celebrating
World Book Day.
NURSERY
Mr Side visited Nursery as a carpenter naming and
showing the children how to use the tools. The children
were able to have a go drilling into some Balsa wood
after being told about safety when handling tools.
Nursery explored the texture and look of feathers.
They used mediums such as the light box and paper in
their exploration.
RECEPTION
The Reception children enjoyed a wonderful trip to the
Horniman museum. They took part in a musical work
shop and were able to explore the instruments and
dress up in a Chinese lion costume. After snack the
children looked around the world gallery and placed
wishes on the wishing tree. They visited the Aquarium
and then took part in a scavenger hunt around the
natural history section.
One of the museum staff commented on the good
behaviour of the children and a member of the public
praised their manners. Well done children. Thank you
to our parent helpers who helped make this a very
special day.
RE IN RECEPTION
The children were learning about Jesus curing people
and other miracles of Jesus and what these miracles
reveal about Him.
Children participated in many practical activities which
has helped them to imagine and understand better
some events from the New Testament.
They changed water into wine using food colouring to
recreate the miracle in Cana, created a storm with a fan
to understand how the Apostles might have felt on
their boat on the Sea of Galilee when there was a
storm.
They learnt about Jesus healing the paralysed man and
then built houses with Lego and boxes. The children
also erected a house on a larger scale using outdoor
construction materials and acted out to the Nursery
the scene of the paralysed man being lowered through a
hole in the roof.
They heard the story about the healing of Jairus’
daughter and made ‘Get Well’ cards for her. Finally, the
children role-played the story of the curing of the blind
man. To be faithful to the story, we used soil and water
to put around the blind man eyes and then washed it off
in a basin of water representing the Pool of Siloam. The
role of the blind man was very convincingly acted out by
Eilidh and the roles of the apostles were played by
Oscar, Henry, Annabelle and Olivia. The story
prompted a discussion around illness and how Jesus is
able to help us when we are ill or have some suffering.
YEAR 2
MAKE 24 Maths Tournament
In the lunch time KS1 maths club we’ve been competing
in our own Oliver House 24 Games Tournament. On
Tuesday 5th February, our three overall winners, Leo,
Hamish and Tomas went to represent Oliver House at
the annual Wandsworth 24 Game Maths Tournament.
The three children made a really good showing, but
unfortunately narrowly missed third place by 2 points.
We would like to congratulate them on their hard work
and valiant efforts.
YEAR 4
The children are studying teeth and used eggshells to
simulate a tooth. They subject this to an alternative of
vinegar, coke or lemonade to see what effect the liquids
have on them. One eggshell was subjected to water as a
comparison.
Year 4 prepared for the Grand Prix season by building
and programming racing cars with Lego WeDo 2 with
real sound effects.
YEAR 5
Year 5 recently investigated conductivity using multi
meters and were introduced to ohms. This is the
investigatory science that is becoming the hallmark of
Science at Oliver House.
YEAR 6
Music Assembly
On Monday morning, Year 6 children amazed their
parents (and the Year 3 audience) with their musical
prowess. For some children it was their fourth year of
music assemblies and the nerves that may have been
present in their first year were nowhere to be seen.
There were too many noteworthy performances to
mention each and every one but there were some
particularly special moments. For example, it was a
delight to see some of the Year 6 girls perform in their
band with Martha on the keys, Catalina on the drums
and Beatrice singing. We also enjoyed a sneak preview
of a song from the drama production performed by our
upper school thespians. The music assembly
demonstrated how hard work, determination and
commitment can bear fruit. The performances were
outstanding and it is wonderful to see how the children
have progressed in their musicality since joining Oliver
House.
SPORTS
Hockey
The U9 hockey team have had an outstanding start to
their season. They have played two matches in the past
week and have won both with very convincing scores.
Their first match was played against Eaton House where
the girls demonstrated some excellent hockey skills.
They showed dominance on the pitch from the start
and were able to break down the opposing team’s
defence to allow themselves to score a total of 14
goals! Oliver House’s defence was just as strong as their
attack and only allowed one goal to cross the line. 14:1
was an excellent final score.
The second fixture was against Finton House, where
two matches were played. Both Oliver House teams
displayed the same determination to win as they had in
the previous game. They went out strong with their
attack from the outset with some excellent stick work
and ball control on display. The girls moved the ball
around the pitches with accuracy and speed allowing
them to score many goals. Oliver House’s defence
worked exceptionally well and were very strong,
neither team conceded a goal! The final scores in these
games were 3:0 and 10:0. Well done girls, two excellent
games played!
Rugby
On Tuesday 12th February our U9 Boys took on local
rivals Broomwood. Unfortunately our three teams all
narrowly lost, in games that could have gone either
way! The A Team lost 9-10, B Team 7-11 and C Team
4-6. Harry, Patrick and Luke should be commended for
their efforts.
TIME CAPSULE
The management of the development (Audley) at
number 3-5 Nightingale Lane invited 8 Oliver House
children to bury a Time Capsule in the foundations of
their new complex on Wednesday 6th February. All
the children in years 4-6 had to produce a short piece
of writing and illustrating it using one of the titles below
as inspiration for their contribution.
My hopes and dreams
The world of tomorrow
What I would like to be when I grow up
My Ideal world
Six children, two from each year groups (4-6) were
chosen out of a hat as well as Head Boy and Head Girl.
The lucky 8 got to place all the drawings into the time
capsule along with a letter and photos of the old
building that once stood on the site, a stamp, £10 note,
a copy of that day’s newspaper and a mobile phone.
The children were each interviewed by a Wandsworth
reporter and radio presenter and he asked them what
they had written about. This was then aired on radio
Wandsworth on Friday evening. The children were also
featured in a lovely article in the Wandsworth
Guardian.
Overall it was a very memorable morning. The children
also enjoyed wearing the PPE equipment and were very
pleased that they also got to keep it.
