Dear Friends Since the last newsletter the club has really began to come together as one club instead of two separate clubs. It has been really nice to see the social nights being well supported and the members enjoying the evenings so much. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my fellow committee members for their help and support. The club members have been busy with the remaining dry sports fixtures. The club also attended the Rushmoor Swimming Gala. I would like to wish all members a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Mandy.

Congratulations to our news team..

which did an excellent job on our Autumn Newsletter. There was something

for everyone and the articles all made good reading. The loose-leaf

information sheet with all emails and telephone numbers will be useful to us

all. A whole year’s committee meeting dates set out before us even before

next year’s committee is elected and our programme for the remaining

months of this year. Don’t forget your committee is asking for your ideas for

forthcoming social evenings.

Mandy’s editorial and Diane’s welfare notes gave us good information and

again good contact details. There can be no excuse for any of us not keeping

in touch with the club and its activities. I think there has already been a good

response from Fiona on the feely bags. Well done, Fiona.

Our games reports gave us the good results of our team members at the

various games this summer and didn’t we do well! Congratulations to all our

medal winners and the excellent team representation at Rushmoor Mallard

games where we were Top Team, last achieved in 1995 when I think I may

have been in the team!

Our day at the seaside, i.e. Eastbourne/Brighton was a really super day and

well reported by Tony and Barbara and the news team. The Air Show added

to our enjoyment and the atmosphere in the resort and an enjoyable day was

had by all. I do not think there will be any empty seats next year and I have

booked mine already on my next year’s calendar.

Thank you, Lin, for your interesting piece of history. I think we have learned

something we did not know from that article.

Thanks, Jim, for taking over our swimming at short notice and for all the help

you have given to us for some time now.

All in all, a very good newsletter and once again, our thanks go to all the

Welfare Report

Best wishes to members who have been unwell recently, we hope you are feeling better now. Our sympathies go to Carole Bennett and Pat Batten who have recently been bereaved. Our thoughts are with them and their families. Nellie Brown, Chris’s mum would like to say thank you for her 90th Birthday card. Welcome to Chris, Patricia, Philip, Fran, and Alex who recently joined the club. Alex joined as a helper member and is doing a really great job. Karen Perry was one of our swimming helpers until she left to have her first child Phoebe. She has recently given birth to her second child, a son, Thomas Luke. Our congratulations go to her and her husband Aaron. It is important we keep in touch with members who are unwell or who we have not seen for some time. Also if you have not been to the club for some time we would love to hear from you to let us know how you are getting on. If you know of anyone who may need a card, please let me know. NATIONAL SNOOKER – MANCHESTER A team of four members took part in the tournament; I got

through to the quarter finals. Mandy won the achievement award

ith Christmas nearly upon us and a New Year on it’s way,

please spare a little time thinking about who you would like

to nominate for the Mike Downey Cup and the Rose Bowl.

Who do you think (disabled or able-bodied) has done most for the Club

this year? Which disabled member do you feel has acheived the most

personally? These are the two questions you need to answer and write

down on your nomination form when it is sent to you in January.

Please don’t think you can leave it to everyone else. Every vote

counts!

In the same way, we shall be forming the committee for the coming

year and we will need your views as to who you would like to see

working for you. Who do you want as Chairman, Vice-chairman,

Treasurer and Secretary? Who else would you like to see on the

committee working for you and for the good of the Club? Please take

time to speak to people and hunt out possible candidates; you will

need their permission to nominate them. Have your list ready for

when the forms arrive on your doorstep. Thank you.

After twelve attempts, a woman finally passed her driving test. Her husband asks, “Now that you have a licence, what can I get you as a reward?” The wife cheerfully replies, “Oh just something cheap to run around in”. So after thinking for a while, the husband goes out to Lidl and buys her some trainers. John White.

ICE

No, not to put in a gin and tonic or the slippery stuff on the roads! If you enter the word ICE , this means In Case of Emergency, into your mobile phone followed by the number of the person you would like to be contacted in an emergency, and save it in your phone’s contact list, the emergency services will look for this number and contact the person on your behalf. You can put in more than one number; list them as ICE 1, ICE 2, ICE 3, ETC.

I understand this is a country wide system. ( I know I have put this in the newsletter before but hope it helps to remind members of these services) D.W.

Advice Regarding Jewellery in the Swimming Pool

It is not a good idea to wear jewellery while swimming, especially necklaces and earrings. Rings without large stones, i.e. wedding rings are OK. In the unlikely event of someone getting into trouble in the pool, jewellery may hinder a rescue or get broken. If anyone wears

jewellery in the pool and it gets lost, we are unable to expect someone to find it. This is only for information and it is up to each swimmer to choose what they want to wear. Swimwear would be appreciated!!!

RADAR KEYS Again I know this has been in the newsletter before but there may be someone who will be glad of this information. These are keys you can get to gain access into disabled toilets. You can get them by ringing 02072503222 or at www.radar.org.uk. They will send you a key, at a cost of £4.00. (£4.80. for organisations as they have to pay VAT) Their address is RADAR, 12 City Forum, 259 City Road, London, ECIV 8AF. Aylesbury Vale District Council use to provide RADAR keys but no longer do so. I got one for a friend recently at a tourist information centre and had to pay £4.00 but it was worth it for the peace of mind it gave him. (Sorry for repeating myself again but this may help someone)

Warning re Parking at Milton Keynes

Recently I went to Milton Keynes shopping centre. I parked in front of John Lewis, facing the main entrance in one of the 3 disabled parking bays. I noticed that in the larger car park facing John Lewis there were notices saying this was now a National Car Park and different charges would apply. I asked a traffic warden patrolling this area if it was still free for blue badge holders; I explained I was in front of John Lewis. I was told I would have to pay £1.10 an hour as the space I was in is now part of the National Car Park scheme. A Milton Keynes centre worker told me I would be able to park if I used the spaces around the corner in front of the other shops. It would still be free for blue badge holders; this was confirmed by a traffic warden. So if you are shopping at Milton Keynes be aware of where you park! Diane White.

November Social

The November social was going to be “member’s choice”, what would it be? Due to no ideas being forthcoming, the committee had to think quickly. Serena Purdy and Vivien Jones came to the rescue. Serena gave a demonstration of how to make some lovely Christmas decorations. She spent a lot of time collecting the greenery etc. for making the decorations. They were very effective and we learnt some good ideas on how to make them ourselves at home. Well Done Serena. Vivien showed us how to make Christmas cards and soon many of us were having a go. The cards looked really lovely and some of us went home to make some more. Thank You Vivien, for the time you spent preparing the materials for making the cards. There was a mini crossbow competition for those who did not want to join in with the decorations. Mainly the men!!! Thank you to Jim, Woody, and Steve for organising this.

SOCIALS

With the Christmas party well under way with

it’s traditional game of Hoy, one has to think of

what to do at the social evenings in the new year.

We do not have a meeting in January, but by

popular request we shall have a ‘feely bag’ evening in

February. Would anyone like to organise this by filling the

bags with everyday items? If so, please speak to Mike or me.

March brings us to the AGM. Not exactly a social evening but

very necessary. Let’s have a bumper turn out; show your

support for your committee on March 1st.

April will be the social nearest Easter. Again, traditionally, we

play Hoy but if members would like a different activity

organised, please let the committee know in good time.

From May to November 2012 is a blank canvas. Put your wish

list of activities in writing and pass it to a member of the

committee. We shall do our best to organise the most popular

choices.

Meanwhile my personal thanks to Serena Purdy and Vivien

Jones who made our November social so enjoyable.

A policeman pulls over a car for speeding. He gets out and asks the

driver why he was going so fast. “I am a clown at the circus and I am

late. I have got to be on stage in ten minutes”, says the man. The

policeman replies, “Ok, if you can prove you are a clown I will let you

off.” So the man gets out of his car, puts on a blindfold, starts juggling,

and begins riding a unicycle as the policeman looks on. Then a car

pulls in behind the police car and out steps a drunk driver who says to

the policeman, “You might as well just arrest me now, there is no way I
