But let's give the word to Donald: "The 2017 convention took place at the Double Tree by Hilton Grand Key Resort in a lush tropical setting. We had good attendance with 234 registered participants for the August 15-19 event. The numerous talks were planned by our program chairman Carole Marshall. The opening talk on the first day was delivered by Wolfgang Grulke from UK, well known for his two modern books, one on Heteromorph ammonites and one on Nautilus. Many other insightful and educational talks followed. The Dealers Bourse on August 18 and 19 had 30 dealers from domestic US and overseas, offering many attractive shells. One special feature of this year's event was the auctioning of part of the Frederic Weiss collection. The collection is a vast accumulation of some very desirable shells. The 11,000 specimens were generously donated to COA by Emily and Susan Weiss in memory of their father. The proceeds from the disposition of this collection goes to the COA endowments fund of which I am the chairman, therefore my close involvement. Beside enriching the COA endowments, the family's other purpose of this donation is to pass on their father's legacy in his passion for shell collecting. The collection will now be dispersed to other equally passionate shell collectors worldwide. With these focuses, COA

What we can state after this auction is that the public got a very good knowledge onthe value of shells The prices reflect almost perfectly the international market Collectorswere aware of the historical value of the shells as well as of the importance of sizesexceptional colors availability on the markets and all other multiple parameters that makethe prices of this particular type of collectors items

To congratulate are the organizers who as can be seen from the photos took greatcare in documenting the valuable collectors pieces

We finish this newsletter with a few photos by John Timmerman for which our thanksof fine specimens from the Weiss collection

On the left the set of two Cymbiolacca perplicata one of my favorites and a truly historicalshell Supply is not assured for the future of this species which explains together with the

very good size of the large shell (83 mm+) the price of 800 $

On the right Cymbiola thatcheri the 131 mm piece There has not been any recent supply byour knowledge of this fabulously beautiful Volute At the time of plenty of the thatcheriwhich is by now more than twenty years gone this size was already extremely rare The

majority of the shells measures between 100 and 120 mm All above that are valuable andthis piece went for a justified 3000 dollars

We remain in the Volutes with this magnificent Amoria kawamurai The shell went for 2500dollars and measures 112 mm which is average for the species The quality looks fabulous

and the majority of the shells offered recently have more or less several flaws It is veryseldom one can acquire a gem in the kawamurai and the winning bidder was lucky to have

taken this opportunity to get one

A set of Epitonim pernobilis that reached 1400 $ The size of the large specimen isresponsible for this nice pricing at a stunning 50+ mm this is a grand rarity

This bright set of Spondylus senegalensis reached the fine pricing of 1250 dollars Twoshells figured in the literature in the set add to the value but we think that the main reason istriple first the spines are particularly well developed in these shells Second the colors arevery good the very red orange and purple pieces are not common most shells are a dullorange red Third this type of senegalensis which is likely to have come from Senegal hasnot been collected in quantity for more than 25 years

The above report was written and forwarded by Donald Dan for which all our thanks

The final remarks with the few photos were written by your classic author of thenewsletters

Sincerely yours
