A DISCIPLE’S PATH Over the coming weeks we will be focusing on our understanding of growing in God’s love and grace in the practices of spiritual disciplines. These disciplines are best expressed in our membership vows to upholding our church with our prayers, presence, gifts,

service, and witness. We know that being a disciple means loving God and loving others, and when we use all of our gifts to be engaged in the community, we are a part of transformation in our own lives and in the lives of others. Beginning on October 29 and continuing through Thanksgiving / Commitment Sunday on November 26 th, we will gain insight on:

Prayer – spending time in prayer each day, and studying and reflecting on the Bible to experience God’s word of hope.

Presence – celebrating God’s presence in worship and the faith community. It is also experiencing Christian community in a small group where we can pray, learn, and grow together.

Gifts – practicing Christian stewardship through financial giving. Service – discovering our spiritual gifts and participating in God’s work through the ministry of the church. Witness – inviting other’s to experience God’s love and become disciples of Jesus Christ.

At the beginning of this year we prayed together A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition. Now, as the end of the year is close at hand, remember those words, “I freely and heartily yield all things to thy pleasure and disposal.”

A Note From The Pastor

When they saw this, they made known what had been told to them about this child; all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart. Luke 2:17-19

One of our family’s favorite Christmas activities is to drive through the neighborhoods and look at the Christmas lights. Some neighborhoods go all out, ever house decorated to the max, all sorts of lights and different themes, one with a Santa Claus roller coaster. Other homes might just have a few strands of lights, some none. I remember one year a yard with a simple cut-out nativity with a single spotlight on it. Maybe that makes good sense for Christmas. Christmas isn’t about big things, but small ones. This guy Jesus, and the message he brings, divided time in two, brought the mighty to their knees and set the prisoners free. He started large social

movements and destroyed others. But it began with a tiny baby, born in a little cave used for a stable, in an insignificant town. Christmas is about how small things change the world. Remember your geography lessons? In Minnesota, one can step across the headwaters of the

Mississippi River; there it is just a tiny stream. It is amazing that a river so mighty begins in such an inconspicuous way. I am starting a new sermon series on the first Sunday of Advent called, What Are You Waiting For This Christmas? Each

week we will be focusing on Hope, Peace, Joy, Love, and A Savior. On Wednesday evenings during Advent we will be offering a study on the life of Joseph. Joseph provides us with a great ex-

ample of humbly following God even when we don’t fully understand. I hope you can join us.

May this season be filled with small things, full of wonder!

Peace,

A Note From The Associate Pastor I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, then you will produce much fruit, because apart from me you can’t do anything. John 15:5 As disciples of Jesus Christ, our calling is to produce fruit, that is good fruit. The fruit that we bear is a result of whatever controls our hearts. True fruitfulness begins in the heart that is filled with Christ’s love. So, let us pause and examine our individual hearts; are they filled with the love of Christ (God-centered), or the love of self (self-centered), or the love of the world (not kingdom of God-centered). Know the world can recognize who we are by the fruit we bear. As the Body of Christ, “One in ministry,” our fruit bearing (mission and witness in the world), can only be possible through our being attached to the Vine (Jesus Christ). As we journey through the holiday season of Thanksgiving and celebrating the Advent of Christ, let us be reminded of all the wonderful (good fruit) Christ has accomplished through us in our community and beyond this year. And in everything give thanks to God, as we look forward to the New Year with expectation and anticipation of bearing much fruit through our witness (evangelism) and mission to all of God’s children. Grace,

ORGAN RESTORATION The FUMC pipe organ is in danger of increasing decline. It was built and installed with the current Sanctuary in 1969 and is almost 50 years old, which is young in the life of a pipe organ. However, maintenance has been sporadic and no improvements have been made to the instrument through the years. With care and improvements, it can serve FUMC many more lifetimes. The Organ Committee begun its campaign to raise funds for the repair of our organ. There is more information on our website www.fumcnac.org and brochures are available outside the Sanctuary.

We hope you will prayerfully consider how you can help fund this project to keep our organ in great shape for the next 50 years.

Chancel Choir Cantata

Sunday, December 10 at 6:00 pm in the Sanctuary

The Chancel Choir, along with Dr. Andrew Parr, Dr. Gene Moon, and

members of the SFASU Orchestra will present Norwegian composer,

Kim André Arnesen's setting of Magnificat. Arnesen describes the piece

in this manner: "Magnificat is song of praise about one of the Bible's great-

est wonders: Angel Gabriel visiting Mary with the message that she will

be the mother of God’s son. In this work, I have tried to express what a

young, poor woman must have felt on receiving such a message: wonder,

devotion, gratitude, joy, humility, hope and compassion. God has heart for

the poor, and when God chose a poor woman to be the mother of his Son, it

says something about a bottom-up view of the world. My Magnificat is therefore a prayer for the sick, the

poor, a song for help and hope of those who are struggling."

Andy Parr's solo setting of the Magnificat text will also be performed by Amanda Sheriff at the beginning

of the service.
