ST. ALBERT PUBLIC SCHOOLS
PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE
May has been an incredibly busy month. Our staff has provided a host of educational, fun, active and exciting activities. I will list a few of them: Western Days with a BBQ, bad-minton (singles and doubles), Hat Day, French 9 luncheon at the Creperie, advanced sci-ence trip to the U of A, art projects, an achievement exam, leadership volunteering all over St. Albert, the grade nine play Chasing Charming, our band playing at the Windspear, track meets, canoeing in fit, a Rec bike trip in the Rockies, students planting trees, grade nines attending the PARTY program and an auction lunch. I know I have missed a few activities, but what a busy place. Thanks to all our staff for encouraging students to be involved outside the regular walls of the classroom! Highlighting the fine arts program! Mrs. Aubin and her grade nine play production group put on a fabulous two night performance of Chasing Charming. It is always amazing to watch Mrs. Aubin turn our students into a fabulous cast and such a professional produc-tion, amazing! Mrs. Henker had our grade sevens visit the Edmonton Art Gallery, exposing them to some of the great works of art. She also had art abandonment, where her art students delivered art to unsuspecting homes within our community. Our sidewalks are covered in chalk murals as her artists are sharing their art with our community. Finally, our band students collaborated with all the other St. Albert Public Schools and put on an amazing night of music at the Windspear. Mr. Demuynck was exceptionally proud of our student’s contribution to the night’s wonderful music. The grand finale featuring the song Amazing Grace was a wonderful heart wrenching song that included the Edmonton Garri-son Band. Our renovation is finally ready to begin! Stanley is our contractor, and they have set up their fencing readying the site. We have emptied three classrooms in advance for the first phase of the project. Soon after our farewell dance they will take the gym and begin working on new PE offices and storage. We will have the gym back on September 1st to kick off our volleyball season. We are very excited to have them starting and knocking down walls and rebuilding and recreating the new W. D. Cuts Junior High!! We are very excited about the work our Parent Society has put into fundraising. Firstly we had a very successful casino, whereby they raised over $21,000. Combining school re-serves and the casino proceeds, our Parent Society applied for a grant with the Govern-ment of Alberta called a CIP grant. Collectively, we now have $140,000 to contribute to new chrome books, classroom sound field systems, a jumbotron in the gym, and new fit-ness equipment. Working together and in conjunction with the renovation, the work of our Parent Society is going to have a huge impact on our ability to make our new school an even better building. Huge thanks to our Parent Society!

Girl Power 9
The Girl Power 9 option had a chance to go the GETT- Girls Exploring Trades and Technology
conference at the Expo Centre on May 14th. They had a busy day of exploring all the different
types of trades in the workforce. I think a lot of them did not realize how many different job
opportunities there are. They got to try some trades and build different things and got to take
home some of their accomplishments. It was a great day all around. Great work girls!
Advanced Science
The grade 7 advanced science option took part in the
"Let's Talk Science Challenge" on May 7th at the Univer-
sity of Alberta. There were 2 teams of four that participat-
ed from William D Cuts. These students volunteered their
time to prepare for this event. The morning consisted of a
question and answer period and the afternoon was a build-
ing challenge. They were to build a wind powered eleva-
tor out of the secret supplies they were given on that day.
It was a fantastic experience for the students and they had
a lot of fun. There was a total of 30 teams in the event.
The DaVinci's reveived a bronze medal and The Best
Team was only 7 points back from them. I would say that
is an impressive outcome since it was William D Cuts
first year participating in this event. Great work and high
fives go to: The DaVInci's -Matthew Tuck, Cameron
Clark, Domenic Channon, Andrew Part and The Best
Team- Mia Cowper, Kaaden Ruman, Jasper Williams ,

Student Information System Transition
St. Albert Public Schools is moving from our current student information system to new pro-
vider, PowerSchool. This transition is already in progress and the change will be evident for
parents in Fall 2015.
Currently you are able to access your child’s attendance and grades through HomeLogic. As of
July 31, 2015 you will no longer be able to access HomeLogic. At the beginning of September
you will be provided with access information for the PowerSchool Parent Portal. Through the
parent portal you will be able to view your child’s attendance and fee balances; you will also
have the ability to pay fees and make purchases. If you have more than one child attending
school in our district, you will be able to view each of your children through the same login.
As our teachers make the transition from the current system to PowerSchool, we need to pro-
vide them time to become familiar with how the product works. As a result, student grades
will not be made public through the PowerSchool Parent Portal until October 15, 2015. If you
have questions about your child’s progress in the interim, please contact the teacher directly.

Play Production 9 Chasing Charming
A modern day twist on the typical fairytale “Chasing Charming” was a hit! An epic cast con-
sisting of: a not so frightening dragon, 3 wacky minions, the handsome Prince Charming, the
ugly old witch and her 2 children, the beautiful princess and Goldie Locks. In this play the
princesses are sent on a mission to rescue their beloved prince. It is on this mission that they
discover the importance of working together. As a team, they save the prince from the horrible
witch. With a surprise ending, “Chasing Charming” was a sold out show, enjoyed by all!

REC ACADEMY
One may be forgiven in thinking that things are winding down. Forgiven, perhaps. But one
would definitely be mistaken.
We had a fabulous time in the foothills on our optional mountain bike trip. A day of mud on
the Ogre Canyon trail was followed by a soak at Miette Hot Springs. the next day the Hinton
Mountain Bike Park beckoned. It is a varied facility open to the public and offering green, blue
and black diamond runs. We had a blast there … but our time was limited because lunch and
the drive home loomed.
The rest of the month will see us combining a tour of the greater St Albert outdoor pools and
the Edmonton River Valley trail system. A chance to fly fish and be instructed in long board-
ing will round out the month. Of course the excitement is building for our Adventure Race on
June 22nd. Be prepared for conversations about Beatles/Rolling Stones lyrics, face paints, ban-
ners and, above all, team strategy. This Fountain Park Pool to Lions Park challenge promises
to be a blast!
