A typically busy week! This week has been another typically busy, productive and successful five days, highlighted by a wonderful World Book Day yesterday, with creative costumes in abundance from children and staff plus a visit from author Tony Bradman. You will find lots of photos in the Photo Gallery. Don't forget to look at the video (on social media or the school website under Our School/Videos). We have officially launched the Copthorne Triathlon that will take place on Sunday 19 May, and would like to extend our invitation to parents (either individually or as a team) to enter. All proceeds will go to the school Astro Appeal fund. The Year 7 LC Parents’ Evening was a first for a Wednesday evening, but proved to be effective for both parents and staff. A junior swim gala; Year 7 trip to Snowdonia presentation; C team chess match; cross-country running at Worth; rugby 7’s at Windlesham and round 2 of our academic scholarship process has all created the buzz of excitement that pervades the school at the moment. Mary Poppins rehearsals in Year 3 and 4 are coming together nicely so don’t forget to book your tickets for the show in the last week of this term. Congratulations to our U10 netballers who won the EGNA tournament at Burgess Hill and the U9 hockey players were also winners of the Burgess Hill school tournament. I am off to Kiev and Moscow from March 18 - 26 to attend exhibitions with educational agents in our attempt to recruit more international boarders so I will be out of school. Mr Close/Mrs Swadling will be running things during my absence although I will be picking up emails as normal. Good luck to the Surrey and Old Burstow Pony Club, who are using the school facilities on Sunday for the non-riding parts of their tetrathlon (swimming/shooting/running)! Have a good weekend. School News

Please, please slow down and drive with care!Again we have had more pleas from our parents this week to remind everyone about their driving to and from school.

Please may we remind you of our driving code: from 8.00am could we kindly ask that you do not drive up the lane from the Curious Pig to the school as it interferes with our traffic one-way system. And most importantly, please can you keep an eye on your speed - there are too many cars driving too fast down the lane and on the school site.

Hall of FameCornelia L-A (Yr3), Sienna C (Yr4), Jennifer K, Anna H (Yr 5)Cornelia, Sienna, Jennifer and Anna played for East Grinstead U10 Hockey Club at The Hockey England Tournament at Hurst. Their team played well and won the U10 final on a very warm Sunday afternoon. Well done girls.

Astro Appeal UpdateJones v SwadlingSpot the difference?! Team Swadling has been joined by a Jones family member as well as Mr Larter … and an extra 21 miles was added to the cycling total this week! Thank you Lucy & Jack! Jaunty is doing famously - only 210 miles to go - though he is apparently lonely and cold in his garage at 6.30am every morning … any takers?

‘Transforming young lives’I was lucky enough to attend this incredibly insightful and forward thinking conference at Christ’s Hospital.

It began with a thought provoking speech from Jim Gamble (Senior British Police Officer) on the challenge of safeguarding in the digital world. He talked about the importance of teaching young children to have strong passwords - ‘stronger is longer!’ and how it can be as easy as showing them a picture and getting them to circle three items then using those three items in a password. With the older pupils he explained that we should not be saying ‘what goes online stays online’ as this takes hope away from those children who make mistakes and there are ways to get images removed or encrypted. The current Apps that parents need to be aware of are; ‘Kik’ tiktok (formerly musicaly), ‘askfm’ and ‘omegle’; all of these are known to predators.

This was followed by a forward thinking Housemaster from Tonbridge School who talked about the art of practising mindfulness and how it can help pupils in everyday life. Richard Burnett himself has used it for over 20 years and it has transformed his life and also his health. This struck a real chord with me as I strongly believe that the stresses we place in our minds are directly linked to ailments we feel.

Mrs Lee Aran S receives his first Sussex cap!Plenty of Copthorne involvement in the annual chess tournament between Sussex U11 Girls and Sussex U9 Boys for the Sir Patrick Moore Cup. Held at St Richards's College in a blustery and wet Bexhill, the girls triumphed by 24 points to 18. Well done to Adi G and Aran S for their exploits on behalf of the boys team whilst Amelie R, Natalie V-H and Niamh G also performed well on behalf of the girls team. Special congratulation go to Aran S who recently received his first Sussex cap for the U9 boys county squad.

World Book DayA HUGE thank you to all children and parents for the amazing costumes on World Book Day. Nursery to Year 4 welcomed author Tony Bradman in to talk about his books and both children and staff thoroughly enjoyed his visit. In the Prep School we designed some fabulous bunting for the library, using our favourite books as inspiration. We created storyboards about the missing part of the picture book 'The Tunnel' before acting these out in drama and used computers to research facts on our favourite authors before making posters to display the information. All this came after a whole school parade in the sports hall! A busy, but very productive day. Well done and a MASSIVE thank you to everyone.World Book Day Costume StoreBrilliant costumes for all our children … well done parents! If you do not wish to keep your costume at home or your child will have grown out of it by next year, Pre-Prep are going to start a Book Day Costume store (like our Nativity Costume store), and put any costumes out on the rack a few weeks before Book Day. Please bring any unwanted costumes into the Pre-Prep office!

The Hawthorns TournamentCongratulations to the U7 football squad who represented Copthorne at The Hawthorns last Saturday. They came a very respectable 6th out of 12, with 1 win, 3 draws and 2 losses across the mornings proceedings. A total of 9 goals scored, Max K with 7 and 1 each from Idris and Ibrahim. Our best score was a 4-0 win over Banstead Prep and a closely fought 2-1 defeat to The Hawthorns who eventually went on to win the tournament. The whole team were outstanding and represented Copthorne proudly that morning. Numerous fantastic saves from Emily in goal, solid defending from Max M, Aarav and Kier, some great passing play by Adi, tenaciousness from Ibrahim, mesmerising goals from Max K and a great solo goal from Idris who charged down the keeper and bravely bundled the ball into the net. Thank you very much to all parents and children involved with the morning and a very big well done to the players who were sportsmanlike to the end! Coach Jordan

Carnival Time is looming …Not quite yet, but the Carnival Committee are looking for assistance

for the great carnival build of 2019! There are usually several wonderfully helpful mums, but they would also love

some help from more dads this year with the building of the float; so if you can wield a saw, drill and/or hammer effectively, and can help for even half a day over the weekend of 8/9 June, please do contact Lucy Flood (lucyparker64@

hotmail.com) or Martin Skelton ([email protected]).The Horley Carnival is 15 June and Copthorne is 29 June; please put these dates in your diaries too, as the children love to come along and

be part of the procession.

Drop Off & Pick Up2 reminders

• Please remember to shut both gates when picking up or dropping off, whether usual or unusual times!

• At the end of the school day once collected by parents, the children should not be playing in the nursery outdoor classroom.

The NurseryThis week Pippins class have made some lovely turtles using paper plates and tissue paper. We watched turtles swimming on the computer and enjoyed playing with hair gel and glitter with the fishes in the tuff spot. This week Acorns class have been singing 'Miss Polly had a dolly'. We have

turned our role play area into a doctor’s surgery full of babies! We are a class obsessed with babies as we have a number of expectant mums! We have been matching laminated numbers to the numbers on telephones as we pretend to call the doctor. We also had a lot of fun seeing the fire engine that came to visit Oaks class.

Oaks class were delighted to welcome the firefighters from Crawley station this week as part of their theme ‘People Who Help Us’. The children were told how important it is to have a smoke alarm in every house and also the importance of making sure they have their seat belts on in their cars. They were then allowed to sit in the cabin and have a turn at squirting the water from the hose reel.Pancakes were also made with the children helping to mix the mixture and the teachers attempting to cook and flip them!Next week we have a visit from a dentist on Tuesday 12 March so any non-Tuesday children are invited in at 8.45am, to be collected again at 9.45am.

Year 2As this week is book week we decided to choose one of our favourites, ‘Traction Man’. This book has a comic book format using an action figure, so the children worked in groups with their own action figures to make their own comic books. It was with great glee that the children planned out their story and then chose a variety of locations to pose and arrange their figures to be photographed. These pictures were then artfully arranged, text added and comics produced. As part of our topic work, we imagined what it would have been like in London in 1666. We looked at the order events of the fire and then the children took on the role of ‘journalists’ and had to write an eye catching front cover for the London Gazette. Olivia challenged the reader to ‘read on to find out more…’During RE we have looked at special books from six main religions and children have identified their own special books.

Reception This week has been a very exciting week in Reception. We have well and truly embraced book week, and had great fun designed our own aliens, making spaceship biscuits and playing a musical bumps game on lily pads. The children also wrote their own shopping lists after the tiger devoured all the food in the house, with sausages, milk and broccoli featuring, as well as treats, biscuits and chocolate and even some beer for daddy! We also manged to work in a mini Science session on Pancake Day to learn all about changing state of materials. We most certainly enjoyed the results of our experiment! The children all looked fantastic for Book Day and we’d like to say a huge thank you to parents for helping with costumes. Next week we’ll be back to farms and look forward to our trip to Bocketts Farm.

Year 1The children have enjoyed an exciting Book Week...reading stories in our classroom dens, designing book covers and writing their own stories and comic strips about ‘Dilly the dinosaur’........the naughtiest dinosaur in the world! How fantastic the costumes of both classes looked on World Book day too! In maths the children have been working on using maths facts to help them calculate quickly and mentally. They are good at recognising doubles and using number bonds to help them to add and subtract. In Forest School, the children spent time identifying our forest trees and describing their various features i.e., smooth/rough/bumpy bark and then drawing them using charcoal made on the campfire. We also made impressive maps of our school grounds and tried to follow them! As we walked around school some of us got to ask grown-ups what their jobs were including Matron, Mrs Vinten and Mrs Ford in the Nursery too.

Red Nose Day – Friday 15th March Whilst the Pre-Prep will be having a Non-Uniform day, the Prep School have decided that we will limit non-uniform to Red noses and/or multi-coloured socks! Having just had World Book Day, and with Earth Day (another non-uniform day) coming up immediately after Easter, we would like to keep some sense of normality/routine on Friday 15 March. We hope that all children will still make a donation (£1 minimum) to Comic Relief!

Lifecoach News Profiling ProjectLast week I mentioned the theme for Year 7 Life Coaching this half term is Relationships and Managing Conflict. Using their DISC profile we look at

• How I manage conflict• What irritates me• How others might see me..• On a bad day I might….

Then students think of a person with whom they would like to improve their relationship. It doesn’t surprise me that quite often the students (especially brothers) choose a sibling, especially if they are of similar ages. Then they literally take a different ‘perceptual position’ and ‘step into that person’s shoes’, wear their skin and look at the world through the eyes of that person. It is a bit weird at first and quite a leap of imagination for some students. It is interesting to see the responses of the students – some have been quite surprised at what they found out. Alternatively, some have found it quite a difficult, uncomfortable and awkward exercise. Here-in lies one interesting idea – that sometimes personal change/growth requires some sort of ‘resistance’ or ‘discomfort’, some sort of difficulty or pain, some sort of fear or reluctance. We feel it as adults, but so do kids. And giving them the tools to ‘fix it’ themselves is very empowering to young people.Food for thought.

Geography5SL are loving using atlases to find out which Allied and Axis countries were involved in World War 2.

Lego ClubCarrying on the WBD theme, Arun created a ‘Bowtruckle’ from Fantastic Beasts, linked to the costume he’s wearing.

Ted Hughes3RG are researching the author of their class novel for this term, Ted Hughes. We found out the key facts of where he is from, his awards and many other key moments in his life. The facts were all brought together during World Book Day, when we wrote our biographies of his life. Many of the facts have surprised the pupils, especially his background of poetry.

Year 4 RSThis term in RS the Year 4s have been studying Islam. This week they learnt all about Wudu. Wudu follows 10 steps that all Muslims follow before they pray and involves washing different body parts either one or three times. Year 4 had a go at performing Wudu themselves and ended the Wudu process by using their index finger to point to the sky!

Invitation Rugby Match and Training SessionLast Saturday, 7 Year 4 boys made the short trip up to Crawley for an invitation rugby match and training session. The boys all took part in some tackling drills, rugby netball and a session on the tackle bags. The boys were also invited to play against the Crawley under 9’s team who have been very successful this season. Despite missing two of our usual ‘A’ team players, the boys put in a great performance to lose narrowly 6-4. Before the boys did the guard of honour for the 1st XV match, they were treated to some food and a talk from the club President. They were all also given a gift of a mini rugby ball and chocolate! The day was rounded off by the boys welcoming the Crawley team and the referee onto the pitch. The behaviour of the boys was impeccable throughout the day and represented Copthorne fantastically. Hopefully the boys were able to see why we work hard during the games sessions and also to see a possible way into club sport outside school.Overall a great day and the boys were a credit to the school.

Chemical Reactions in Year 6Year 6 Science looking at chemical reactions. We combined Sugar, Potassium Chlorate and Methylated Spirits to form a mixture, which we set alight. This is the result!

Iron Man ModelsYear 3 were set a half term challenge to make their own version of The Iron Man which they have been reading in their English lessons. Some great entries came in with Mr Jones waiting to pick the winning model.
