The school diary is filling up with many exciting opportunities. To continue to enthuse our children about reading and writing, next week sees Years 2, 5 and 6 meeting authors and finding out more about writing stories. Year 3 will enjoy a visit from the Safety team at Skansa and learn all about being safe on the road, and particularly around road works. The first group of Year 6 children have begun their cycle training, Reception class enjoyed their first Forest School visit and Year 3 children began their first 'strings' lesson, getting to grips with the violins and cellos. Next week, we are fortunate to have ‘Prayer Space’ in school once again and you will have already seen the information sent out about it. It is an opportunity for children to reflect and the library will become a wonderful, thoughtful oasis that you too are invited to take look at. I look forward to as many of you as possible popping in to see what your children have been doing and being able to share in an aspect of our school life. Nursery parents can visit after the Nursery session on Thursday 28th September, and parents of children in the main school between 3:15 and 3:45pm on Wednesday 27th September. On Wednesday, our first House sporting event of the year took place with the cross country competition for Key Stage 2. As always there was lots of encouragement and enthusiasm. Well done to Red Scorpions who took first place and received their Certificate in assembly today. Our value this week is honesty and it is always rewarding to see just how honest our children are - telling the truth isn't always easy! Our roll of honour in the newsletter lets you know who the worthy recipients of our values stars are. You will have seen the recent email explaining that we currently have no officers for FOLF; a parent has kindly offered to think about being the treasurer but we will need a chair and secretary and these roles can be 'job shared' with 'many hands making light work'! Please come along to the EGM in October. We are fortunate there are so many willing helpers who do lots of different jobs in and around school. Our RALF readers are getting a special mention this week as they quietly get on with the really important but enjoyable task of reading with children who make enormous progress with their reading following their sessions. We know how important it is to develop reading skills and share a love of books and stories and our RALF readers are an important part of this, so thank you very much to you all! My best wishes for the weekend and thanks for your continuing support, Carol Dunne Headteacher @Long_Furlong_PS

During the period Monday 25th - Thursday 28th September, the churches in Ab-ingdon will once again be running 'Prayer Space' in school. We are delighted that Year 5 & 6 pupils have been invited to an author talk in the Catherine McAuley Auditorium at Our Lady’s Abingdon on Tuesday 26th September 2017. Pupils have been invited to a session by children’s author Julia Golding, author of the Mel Foster and the Cat Royal series. Year 2 pupils are attending a Philip Ardagh and Elissa Elwick event also on Tuesday 26th September 2017, taking place at Rush Common School. Philip is the author of many children’s books including the Grunts and the Eddie Dickens Series. Year 1 and 2 have been invited to take place in an Abingdon Schools sporting event aimed at younger pupils on Wednesday 27th September at Thomas Reade School. On Thursday 28th, Year 5 pupils will attend an Ogden Trust Thames Water and Chocolate Factory event at Larkmead School. On the same day, Year 3 pupils will enjoy a roadworks safety session in school by Skansa. We end the week with the very important Macmillan coffee morning—see below for de-tails on how to get involved.

COMING UP ….

On Friday 29th September we are holding our Macmillan coffee morning in

the hall at 9am. We need your support to make this fundraiser a success.

How can you participate?

Make a cake/cupcakes/scones/biscuits etc. and bring them into school first

thing on the 29th.

Join us in the hall for coffee and cake with as many younger children,

family members and friends as you can gather where we will have a

collection in aid of Macmillan.

If you can’t make the event you can send any donations for Macmillan into

the school office.

Thank you!
