Acting Principal’s News - Mr Steve MacPhail
Hands On Learning We have twelve Year 9 students taking part in our inaugural Hands-On-Learning program.
The students are working under to tutelage of Tania and George in an environment that fosters teamwork and builds their leadership skills. A strong focus for the
program is on students giving back to the community and as such, we are on the lookout for community projects we can get involved in. Thanks to Leanne at Daylesford Home Timber and Hardware who helped us get setup with all
the right tools and timber.
Rebuild
The Rebuild continues with the demolition of B- block almost complete.
The slab has been poured for the Music block and the steel frame erected. Work has also started on the car park extension.
The framing and footings for the Food / Art / Science building will begin shortly. We are still on track for Stage 1, the Food / Art / Science wing plus the Music block, to be completed by late Term 3.
Athletics Carnival We had one of our biggest turnouts in a while at this year’s Athletics carnival with over 80% of students attending. This resulted in a fantastic atmosphere throughout the day. Once again thankyou to the HAPE staff for organising the day and also to Mr Cowan for his superb work on the mic. A big congratulations goes to Oliva Leonard, Kelly McPherson, Ryan Thiesz, Phoenix Sewell and Tom Henderson who all broke school records. Finally, to Hume who took out the honours. Well done!
School Council Nominations An election is taking place for the three seats on School Council. Voting packs were given to all Year 8 to Year 12 students to bring home last week and Year 7s had theirs posted home due to them being on camp. Also included are statements from the candidates to assist you when casting your votes. Please read the relevant information, complete your voting slip and either post your ballot papers or lodge them at school within the timeframe.
New Staff Finally, I would like to welcome Mr Mark McKenzie to Daylesford Secondary College. Mr McKenzie is an experiences Maths-Science teacher who will make an excellent addition to our teaching ranks. Mr McKenzie replaces Ms Violante.

Health and Physical Education – (HAPE)
What are the Australian Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines?
The physical activity guidelines suggest the minimum amount of time we should be active for. The sedentary behaviour guidelines suggest the maximum time we should be sitting or inactive for (excluding sleeping).
What are the guidelines for teenagers and adults? Teenagers (Ages 13-17) In this age bracket teenagers need to accumulate 1 hour of moderate to vigorous intensity physical activity every day. Strength based training is recommended on 3 days per week. Furthermore, teenagers need to limit their sedentary behaviour (use of electronic media) to 2 hours per day.
Adults (Ages 18-64) In this age bracket adults need to be active on most days of the week (5-7 days). They need to accumulate 150-300 minutes of moderate intensity physical activity or 75-150 minutes of vigorous intensity activity each week. They can also complete an equivalent combination of both. Furthermore, strength based training is recommended on 2 days per week. Adults need to break up long periods of sedentary behaviour.
How can we measure the intensity of physical activity?
The talk test. Low: You can sing while completing the activity. Moderate: You can still manage a conversation while completing the activity. Vigorous: You can’t manage a conversation while completing the physical activity.
Heart rate measurements Your maximum heart rate approximately is 220 – Age Low: Less than 50% of maximum heart rate Moderate: Between 50-70% of maximum heart rate Vigorous: Above 70% of maximum heart rate
Examples: Low: Walking, light gardening or stretching. Moderate: Brisk walk, jogging or vacuuming. Vigorous: Fast running, active team sports or swimming (It does depend on how hard you are working in the activity.)
So, do you meet the recommended guidelines for your age? Be active with friends, family or a group of people and enjoy the health benefits associated with being active.

“Insights & Inspiring” Quotes
Success
Success is doing the best you can, in as many ways as you can.
It is being just and honest and true, not in a few things, but in everything you do.

It is in dreaming the greatest dreams and seeking the highest goals that we build the
brightest tomorrows ….

2016 YEAR 12
Pictured from L – R: Tady Callahan, Georgia Sayn, Antoinette Portelli, Mia Swan
Daylesford Secondary College congratulates the 2016, Year 12, students who received offers for their selected higher education courses, and are now beginning the next stage of their education. The diversity of students’ interests is exciting. There has been a concerted focus on nursing, with seven students pursuing careers in other health related courses including psychology, health science, biomedical science and occupational therapy. Two students are following careers in health and physical education. Creative endeavours include fine art, visual arts, photography and audio production. Engineering, business and information technology also feature as future pathways, with studies in arts, international studies, agricultural science, science and justice rounding off the list. Reflecting this extensive range of areas being pursued is the range of tertiary institutions being attended. Students have successfully satisfied the requirements for our local Federation and Australian Catholic Universities, while those moving further afield will be attending La Trobe, RMIT, University of Melbourne, Monash, Deakin and Victoria University. Acting Principal, Steve MacPhail, stated that, “We are very proud of the accomplishments of our 2016 VCE students and we are extremely happy to see so many of them gaining entry into their preferred courses. Daylesford Secondary College does an excellent job at providing a diverse curriculum that caters for all students no matter what their passion and interests.” Pictured are four of the thirty-seven students who chose to continue their education at University in 2017 and beyond.

Where to for Jobs? We all hear about loss of jobs, the changing employment scene, part time work, underemployment, jobs of the future. Obviously, the future job situation is very hard to predict, but clearly, young people of today face tough decisions and an uncertain future regarding their study and career options. In this regard, you might be interested to read some of Jan Owen’s thoughts in the publication The New Work Order: Ensuring young Australians have skills and experience for jobs of the future, not the past, at http://www.fya.org.au/2015/08/23/media-release-young-people-hardest-hit-by-new-work-order/. She believes that there will be three key economic drivers – automation, globalisation and collaboration. It makes for interesting, if concerning reading, with young people facing career/employment options entirely different from many of the older generations.

For students interested in entering the retail workforce, full training is can also become a component of their volunteering experience after some time.
For Mums and Dads who have a spare 4 hours a week and would enjoy working for their town and the people within, who are experiencing difficulties, as the proceeds from our shop goes directly to helping these folk.
If you have any questions regarding this please feel free to either email me on this address, call on 52343862 or call into the shop any day between 9-5 Tuesday to Saturday. Many thanks
