Dear Parents, Guardians, Community Members, Staff and Students,

Welcome back for Term 3. What a term it is going to be! Our calendar is packed full with some very exciting learning activities this term with different year levels participating in a number of opportunities. Please check the term planner for all the events coming up for young and old.

The holidays are always a time of professional reflection for me as a Principal; to consider the months past, and also to look to the future of the school that I lead. One of the things that I strongly believe in is the importance of relationships in education. It is the foundation we build on to create amazing schools. It is not the only thing, but without, you have nothing.

If we want meaningful change, we have to make a connection to the heart before we can make a connection to the mind. Spending time to develop relationships and building trust is crucial to moving forward as a

whole. It all starts by creating an environment where people feel cared for, supported and are nurtured—the very things we know that impact learning for students in the classroom. I believe the staff at WLPS strives to demonstrate this in their daily practice with not only the students but also their colleagues.

Last Monday was one example of our supportive culture at West Leeming. Whilst the children were enjoying their last day of the holidays, a group of non-digital native members of staff went on a technological adventure to the Apple Store in Booragoon. They spent the whole day learning and laughing together whilst creating shared digital stories which they excitedly shared with the staff who did not attend. Most feel more confident in teaching with technology than they had before.

There is a wonderful Ted talk, ’Every Kid needs a Champion’, by an outstanding educator, Rita Pierson, which all teachers and parents should view. Although it is about students, as a Principal I also think that each adult in a school also deserves a champion or two to be the best educator they can be.

See you in the playground, Kylie Moss

NEVER STOP READING Reading is a fundamental skill your child will use for the rest of their life. Recent research by literacy expert Dr Margaret Merga found that over half of parents stop reading aloud with their children once they begin to start reading for themselves. This happens even though children enjoy it well beyond their early years of schooling.

Reading aloud with your child throughout their primary school years has significant, positive effects on their learning and reading skills. Listening to your child as you read together also builds their social skills and confidence as they engage with you, and the quality time that you spend with them raises their mood and sense of wellbeing.

MUSEUMS IN MOTION On Tuesday, 26 June, the students from S3, S4 and S6 held a very successful evening for their parents. The students researched an aspect of early Australian history, constructed dioramas relating to the period, completed an iPad presentation and dressed in period costume for the night. The parents were able to visit the three classrooms and speak to the children about their presentation and who they were and why they were important. About 170 parents and siblings attended.

to Mr Bakowski, Miss Churack, Mr Smith, Mrs Arcus, Mrs Fitzgerald and Mrs Newton for their tremendous efforts to make the night such a great success!!

It’s going to be a roller coaster ride for Music this term. Mark the dates in your diaries NOW!

RECITAL NIGHT: August 1st at 6.30pm at the Performing Arts Centre, Leeming Senior High School. A note went home last term about this event to all students who are learning an instrument at this school. String Ensemble and Band students are to wear long black pants and their school tops/ leavers tops while all others will wear their school uniform. Please be at the Centre after 6.00pm. All family and friends are welcome to come but there is usually only standing room if you are late!

HELP required for set up. Any parent and child who can assist with putting out over 100 chairs, 20 stands, direction signs, names on seats, please come to the Performing Arts Centre at Leeming SHS from 3.00pm. I also need keyboards, amplifiers and music boxes to be taken to the high school. Please let me know if you can assist in any form as I can’t do this by myself after school.

THE GRUNCH: WEDNESDAY, 29th AUGUST, 6.30pm Rehearsals continue to be amazing with all of the students being so enthusiastic, learning parts and remembering their dance routines. A musical newsletter went home last week with all students who are involved, outlining rehearsal times. If you didn’t see it, ask for it as there are some extra rehearsals added. We will ask for help as needed but don’t forget to mark WEDNESDAY, 29th AUGUST, 6.30pm in your diaries now. The musical will be held in the Undercover Area and tickets will be on sale soon.

Are you an amateur video buff who loves taking videos of kids doing wonderful things? Then THE GRUNCH needs you! We would like someone to video THE GRUNCH performance, edit it and produce a CD. If you are that person, or know of someone, please contact me ASAP. Of course, they don’t have to pay for the ticket!

MUSIC BUZZ

Other News: At the end of last term, students from M2, M3 and M5 performed at the SINGFEST held at Bannister Creek PS. The students

sang well up on stage and joined in enthusiastically with the other schools to sing a variety of songs. Well done! There will be an incursion by an Indonesian group, Makukuhan, on September 5th and this is for all students from Pre-

primary to Year 6. Selection for learning an instrument at West Leeming PS: This will occur at the end of this term and early next term. All

Year 2, 3 and 4 students will be tested for selection. Over the next few weeks I will give more detail about the process, which instruments are available to which Year groups and what selection means to the student and family.

Enjoy this term and remember that “ Music is what feelings sound like.” ( unknown)

STAFF CARPARK Please note: The Staff carpark is for staff use only.

We request that parents respect and and abide by the rules regarding the Staff carpark.

There has been a considerable number of parents entering the Staff carpark to pick up or drop off their children. This not only causes problems for staff entering the carpark, but it is also a safety hazard with cars backing out at a very busy time.

In the interests of child safety, parents are not to use the Staff carpark to pick up or drop off children at any time.

PARKING AT WLPS West Leeming, in conjunction with the P&C, has allocated designated parking around the school in order to promote safety for all our students..

We thank all those parents who park in the areas designated for our school. Please remember that the “Kiss and Drop” zone, located at the front of the school, is not to be used as parking bays. Parents who arrive early at school to pick up their children should park in the car parks and not sit in the “Kiss and Drop” zone for lengthy periods. This causes con-gestion for those parents who use this area correctly.

We once again remind parents and carers who are dropping off or collecting children from school to exercise extreme care. Little people can be hard to see from the driver’s seat of a big car; they also tend to be very quick.

Please slow down around the school, park in designated areas, make use of the “kiss and drop” zone correctly and keep our kids safe.

A map and more information on our parking zones can be found at http://www.westleeming.wa.edu.au/parking.html

Long Bomb: Adam H., Angus M. Kwik Kick: Jack F., Adam H., Poppy J., Jaide M.,

Kaiya M., Tarah R. They won their division and now will take part in the Grand Final to be held at Optus Stadium on 12 August.

FREO KWIK KICK During the recent school holidays, several students took part in the Freo Kwik Kick and Long Bomb Competition.
