WEEKLY RIDDLE:

I can fly but have no wings. I can cry but I have no eyes. Wherever I go, darkness follows me. What am I? See next weeks newsletter for the answer.

We now have completed four weeks in our new online delivery of our learning program. There have been many discoveries of effective learning that will continue when we are all back at school together. For instance, there are some students with variable school attendance history that are applying themselves very effectively in our new online learning mode. It has been very rewarding to see the large numbers of tributes being posted by students and families about how much they are enjoying the online sessions and video clips. However, it must be remembered that students, staff and families need to be sure to get good rest and exercise during this time. We have to have a very positive and supportive attitude or otherwise we could feel anxious or worried. We have had a setback in our COVID-19 control strategy with the outbreak of a COVID-19 hot spot at an industrial facility. Let us hope that this will be fully controlled and that our low infection rate be consolidated as soon as possible. The review of our State of Emergency will take place on next Monday, 11th May. If we can flatten the infection rate to a bare minimum, we will enable our Health Officers and Government Leaders to make progressive and proactive decisions for the future. In the meantime, I encourage everyone to keep up your good work and positive approach to these matters. Let our spirits be kept high by a sense of caring, sharing and happiness. We will continue our study of the value, Caring, next week. Caring people help make the world to be better place. When someone knows that others care about them they feel less alone. It is very important for us all to show others how much we care particularly during this difficult time. Our staff have been reaching out to our students and their families daily. We all need to take advantage of our phones or other forms of digital communication to keep in touch with our extended family members and friends. This Sunday is Mother’s Day. Motherhood is the epitome of Caring. Our mothers are always there for us. Sunday will give us an opportunity to show our Mums how much we care about them too. KINDNESS AWARDS

This week’s Kindness Award goes to one of our parents, Jane Groenewegen who has kindly given a huge fruit platter to the staff in appreciation for all their hard work during the Covid-19 period. Thank you Jane for your kind gesture and caring so much about us.

Curious Moment: What Can You Create? Use your imagination this week to create and build!

Creating and building gives children opportunities to try out new ideas, new ways of thinking and problem-solving. It builds our brains, enhances our understanding of math and science and supports healthy social and emotional learning.

Zija built his own alarm clock.

Nisini built a house and a life size robot, named Rosi. Ashley used lego to build a boat and house.

Daniel made a helicopter.

Angel made a Harry Potter triple decker bus.

Here is a photo of Hannah Mc proudly showing her completed math worksheet.

Ashley made yummy pancakes on the weekend.

MOTHER’S DAY MORNING TEA

This weekend we celebrate mothers and all female figures in our lives! It was wonderful to see so many parents all together for JSF’s virtual Mother’s Day Morning Tea. We shared some wonderful moments over a cup of tea with some cupcakes thanks to Mrs Mohan and Mrs Mouncer. A big shout out to Mrs Mouncer for delivering these cupcakes to each and every family so we could all celebrate together. All the children of JSF made a card to commemorate the occasion. Here are some beautiful photos of JSF students with their mums.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ART & REMOTE LEARNING

Marissa A (MSK) has been busy drawing and colouring animals.

Daniel C (MSH) has been learning to sew on an industrial sewing machine whilst remote learning at home.

Riley R (MSE) was busy making these beautiful wreaths for Anzac Day.

It was a very different Anzac Day Dawn Service this year with everyone staying safe at home. Every year Scout Groups across Australia usually participate in the Dawn Service and/or the Anzac Day March. Here are two photo’s showing Simon P (MSE), dressed smartly in his Scout’s uniform, standing at the bottom of his driveway holding a candle at dawn with his neighbours doing the same whilst keeping social distancing. This is how we remembered and showed respect to the Anzacs who sacrificed so much so Australians could keep their way of life and to keep us safe.

This is a photo of Simon P (MSE) completing school work safely at home.

During the COVID-19 social distancing period it is very important not only to keep up with our school work, but to look after our health and wellbeing. The photos above show how Noah W (MSG) has been looking after his health and wellbeing by exercising regularly, completing school work and also doing things that he is enjoying in isolation. Well done Noah!

Marc M (MSK) sent in photos of him making Anzac biscuits for his family. The last picture show Marc eating the fruits of his labour. I wonder how many his family members got to eat.

This is Robbie C (SSB) cooking Ms Carrigg’s, fried rice from last Friday’s Webex cooking class. I think we are going to have a lot of excellent cooks at the end of this lockdown.

Jackson V-E (SSI) has been helping out his Dad and learning cabinet making skills.

Here are some photos of Callum B (SSI) making cupcakes and helping clean the house whilst renovations are happening.

Thanu M (SSI) is keeping busy at home cooking up a storm.

Above is a photo of Zach R (SSI) working on an art & craft piece.

Zach R (SSI) is keeping himself very busy with school work, art & craft projects and cooking. Here are some photos of Zach making sausage rolls. They look delicious. Maybe he could send us the recipe for others to have a go at making them.

Virtual Running Series

Thank you to all staff and students that took part in the first Virtual Running Challenge from 24-26 April. Marc M (MSK), Chrissy M (MSC), Callum M (SSB), Mr Hodgson, Mr Mooney and myself were part of 106 members and friends of Glenhuntly that took part in this historic event. I did my run around Caulfield Racecourse.

The next Challenge will take place from 8-10 May and it’s not too late to enter. For juniors (U18), a new 1.5km distance has been added. We encourage as many staff, students and their families to run or walk and support the spirit of community engagement. For details and how to register, go to: https://www.glenhuntlyathletics.com/winter-series-race-2020-race-2.

If you would like to be involved but prefer not to be listed in the results, please email me, along with any other questions you have, at: [email protected].
