The year 7 team performed exceptionally well and almost came away from their tournament as winners, but in the end lost by a single point, to finish in second place. The year 8 team put in a series of real quality performances to win their age group’s competition without losing a game and with only conceding a single goal. The year 9 team started well in their competition but some tough games saw them finish mid table, after being narrowly defeated by the overall winners, and the year 10 team struggled to get to grips with their games and finished outside of the running at the end of the competition. Thank you and well done to all of the boys who took part and especially those who made the effort to stay behind on Friday afternoons for practice. SPORTSHALL ATHLETICS Year 7 and 8, boys and girls teams both performed very well in the sportshall athletics. This was a triangular event between UCC, Catmose College and CBEC. The winning boys and girls teams in each year group will now go through to the inter-SSP competition which will be held in Leicester. Congratulations to both of the UCC girls teams, as they both came first on the night and will now be eligible to participate in the inter-SSP event. SPORTING NEWS UNIFORM UPDATE We have been very pleased with the response to the new uniform introduced last year and feel that our students look and feel much smarter and are a credit to the school. We are continuing to improve on this and have decided the next step is to phase out the school sweatshirt. We are now encouraging students to purchase the school jumper rather than the sweatshirt and will not be replenishing them when the current limited stock has gone. We are also reviewing the PE kit, although a decision has yet to be made as to the supplier. We will no longer be using the red sweatshirts or the PE skirts. More information will follow. As part of the Fundraising After School Club a small group of students have decided to organise and hold a fashion show on Thursday 25th March, at 7.30pm in the Drama Studio. Working with the company ‘Smartys,’ the event will offer a rare opportunity to purchase end of lines and surplus stock from all your favourite high street stores at half price or less whilst having a fun evening with friends. All funds raised will go towards small school projects chosen by the students involved. Tickets are now available from the College shop or by contacting Mrs Wade at the College. RAISING FUNDS FOR UPPINGHAM COMMUNITY COLLEGE TRAFFIC JAMS We are still experiencing problems at the end of school with the number of parents turning up to collect their children at the same time as the buses. We have contacted the Highways Department who will be working with us to overcome this, but would still be grateful if parents would collect their children 10 minutes after the end of school when the buses will have departed.

produCtions

We had a plethora of Drama showcase evenings in December. On Tuesday 8th and Thursday 10th, we opened our doors for Year 10 GCSE Drama students to showcase their first coursework performances based on the Christmas tradition of Pantomime but with a few twists. In spite of some technical hitches on the 10th, the evenings were highly entertaining. Thanks to the parents and friends who supported these

evenings; the audiences really bought into the pantomime spirit.

On Wednesday 16th December Year 8 & 9 students from the Acting Master Cass enrichment group, staged an adaptation of ‘The End of the Line’, a short comedy set on The Underground. What really added to the event was that our Technical Theatre enrichment group provided all the technical elements required, including projections, lighting and sound.

the demon headmaster

Auditions recently took place for this, our chosen school production this year. Auditions were very well attended and the calibre of students keen to get involved made it very difficult to cut numbers down to a manageable size. Hence, we are getting very excited about what we’ll be able to achieve with such a talented cast between now and June. Performances will be on 24th and 25th June – watch this space!

rigged

A professional theatre company, Theatre Centre, visit UCC on Tuesday 23rd February to perform ‘Rigged’ at 5.30pm - 7pm. The play covers some strong themes and is, therefore, only open to Year 10 upwards. Tickets are priced at £1 for Drama students and £3 to all others and are available now from Mrs. Perkins.

Don’t miss out!

wiCked

Unfortunately, due to the adverse weather conditions in early January, this trip had to be cancelled. We

are looking into how much of the cost will be refundable and we are confident there will be plenty of future opportunities for students to attend the theatre.

in the afternoon to put the finishing touches to our projects. Before leaving we all meet back for more refreshments and compare projects. Everyone leaves with the fruits of their labour having had a great day of doing something different that’s FREE!!!

Our next day is planned for Saturday 20th March when the activities will once again include an opportunity to make yourself a funky cover for your mobile phone or ipod, shoulder bags or many other options with fabric and

machines. There will be cooking with the now infamous John Fahy. John promises to show us how to produce ice cream in less than an hour!! We will be hosting the Rocket Man from modelrockets.co.uk who will share with us some fun building and flying rockets. Local artist Tessa Angell will be joining our team sharing some of her expertise with hands on projects.

Places for this FREE fun family day are limited and already booking fast - contact Mrs Wade to book your places today.

Family aCtivity days

So far we have held three in our series of activity days for the family. The fun kicks off at 10am with welcome drinks and snacks. After everyone has had chance to say hello the groups split into their chosen activities. We meet back to share some lunch: cooked by the chef’s of the day! Feeling very satisfied we enjoy the last couple of hours
