Jesus was very observant; he saw things that others overlooked. In parables like the Good Samaritan, Jesus taught his disciples the importance of beingobservant and paying attention to those things and people that sometimes are easilyoverlooked. Jesus was relational, too. He didn’t merely observe from a distance, butobserved and then took action. He invested himself in relationship with all kinds of people. Today, it is easy to overlook many things and people in life. But it is equally easy to observe things without relationally involving ourselves in a solution or response. As followers of Jesus Christ we have been called to walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

In the church world there has been a lot of talk about our declining denomination.Much of the solution to this worldwide church problem has centered on ministry withyoung people—people from 18-35 who are largely absent from churches today. The startlingfacts just about college students alone, according to a recent USA Today article, are 32% consider themselves “true believers,” 32% are spiritual but not religious and 28% are secular. Of the “true believers” only 1 in 5 goes to church on a regular basis, and what is meant by “regular” is once a month. We can observe these facts, this problem, but if we ask “WWJD” (What Would Jesus Do) then our question should be: are we willing to do something about it?

Yes! Shandon is committed to being more than distant observers; we are committed to being relationally involved in the lives of young people, the future of ourchurch. In connection with Wesley Memorial United Methodist, we have come togetherfor the past three semesters in a college-age ministry called Common Ground. This is another ministryof Shandon where people can find their way into a deeper relationship with God and a lasting fellowship with the church.

As a church, we have the opportunity to do something great for the kingdom ofGod among college students in Columbia. But, as a church family, we must invest relationally in the lives of these students and nurture in them a sustaining, living faiththat will change those statistics for the positive. What is, can be better. Will you merelyobserve, or will you follow Christ into action?

Along with the needs of our weekly gatherings, I would love to see a care-package outreach develop for those college students living away from home. RAYS OF HOPESunday, November 10, by Fran Rametta

12:15-1:30 in Player Hall

Most all of our existing forms of energy are important and worth keeping: coal, electricity, oil, nuclear energy, natural gas. However, think about this fact: In 20 days, the sun provides the same amount of energy as all theother combined energy sources known to humankind. Wow! Let’s become more educated about renewableenergy derived from natural processes that are replenished at a higher rate than they are consumed (e.g. sun-light, wind, geothermal energy stored in the earth). A fascinating presentation for adults, youth and community.

Fran Rametta has devoted his life to sharing natural history with tens of thousands of visitors in national parksand education centers, and through lectures, teacher workshops, and field trips on television and radio. In2010, Fran retired as Congaree National Park's longest-serving ranger-naturalist (30 years). In retirement, hewants to raise awareness about renewable energy sources and also enjoys being trumpeter in the Columbia-based Heart ‘N Soul rhythm and blues band. Fran and his wife, Beth, are active Shandon members.
