Saint-Malo is OLD the first settlements go back two millennia This is likelybecause the Rance river mouth was excellent for boat shelter and at the same time arich source of either fresh water andor marine food of all kinds The waters aroundSaint-Malo are exceedingly rich in marine life
The city was important in the first millennium BC but it became increasinglyinteresting and notorious in the 15th century when many corsairs privateers andpirates settled in the region
The name of Saint-Malo is after the saint of that name an immigrant from WalesSaint-Malo got ambitions not to be Breton or French but Malouin A name comingback regularly in the area Also the name after which the Falklands are sometimesnamed icircles Malouines
Next to the parkings at about 40 meters from the gates the well protected harbor Iremember that at several occasions I could admire some of the most famous boats
from nearby such as the Pen Duick VI with which Tabarly was winning the transatlanticrace in 1976
The city walls are incredible they are wide and on top there is a walking paththat goes all around the city In a relax way this walk takes about one hour and onegoes from one splendid view to another when turning counter clock wise you have

The tourist shops play the cards of the city its notorious past is everywherehere a display of great privateers and pirates and their assets To the great satisfactionof the youngsters
The famous steak Chateaubriand is named after him He is important andconsidered the founder of romanticism in the French literature He is everywhere inSaint-Malo because he is buried - romantic - on one of the small Islands just outsidethe city His well-known work Memoirs from Beyond the Grave (Meacutemoires dOutre-Tombe) published after his death became particularly famous

Outside the city just south of it is an agglomeration called Saint-Servan
This area was particularly important in my early years as a conchologist as it isin Saint-Servan that at about 12-13 years old I observed and collected my first rockshells from Europe the famous Patellids mainly vulgata and intermedia variants thetop shells Gibbula pennanti and umbilicalis also Phorcus lineatus and the beautifulCalliostoma zizyphinus
Saint-Servan was also important for the privateers and consorts after havingmade a fortune at the risk of their lives on the wild oceans they often settled in Saint-Servan in nice small castles or big farms they build overlooking the Rance river
Repeatedly I stayed in hotels made in their former castles and this time it wasnot an exception we stayed in such a Malouiniegravere dating back from the early 17th
century and we were at a few hundred meters away from the fantastic GrandAquarium of Saint-Malo

This aquarium is nothing less or more than a real jewel It was opened in 1996and today it houses about 11000 animals belonging to over 600 different speciesHere a spectacular view on jellyfishes
Shortly after the Grand Aquarium opened several of the first shell shows fromBrittany were held in its facilities All European collectors and dealers got a great timethere
When we visited there were several schools with dozens of pupils each having aguided tour throughout the museum There is space for classes as shown here wherethe kids get plastic replica of animals to examine and play with while the teachersexplain

httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=193 812
There is a geographic section where one travels through the world seas Herepart of the Mediterranean animals
In the center of the place a mega aquarium with bull sharks one has theimpression you can touch them
8102019 httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=193
httpswwwconchologybenewsbodyphpid=193 912
Outside are several pools with different topics Here Japanese carp Nishikogoiin short koi Not the Japanese quality but different and some with also pleasingcolors Koi lovers appreciate all and each pond is a discovery
And in the extensive touch pools a nice set of Pecten maximus There are fiveon this photograph and this is very much how the diver sees them
Our second day in Saint-Malo we returned to the city center and made a walkaround the city walls We saw that it was low tide and access to this small offshoreisland was easy a twenty minutes walk over the sand bar surrounded by crystal clearwaters brings you to what is called the Fort National
We were lucky as access to the Fort National is only between 1 June and 30September in general The Fort got many other names in its history and was build byVauban a famous military architect in 1689

Back on the walls of the city Philippe got this lucky shot with a sea gull walkingjust in front of the Fort National Look how proud this bird is
So far for our visit and two days in Saint-Malo and Saint-Servan The day afterwe moved further westwards and this is for the next newsletter
