School Council Meeting - 13th June @ 5.00pm
Specialist School Conference
Last Friday was a student free day because all of our staff joined staff from Shepparton, Cobram and Wodonga Spe-
cialist Schools. We spent the day in Mulwala engaging in a whole day presentation from Dan Petro, a Behavioural
Analyst who works with a number of mainstream and specialist schools across the country. The day was insightful
and inspiring, with many take home messages which we as a whole staff have agreed to work to embed within our
school environment. It was a day full of new ideas and also some well needed reinforcement that our practices are
strong, and the environment we have created for the students at our school is an incredibly positive one. One of the
things that stayed with me personally was the idea that as a school our goal should be to help our students become
as independent and likeable as possible. We met with Dan at school this past week and have booked in a number
of visits before the end of the school year where Dan will spend time in our school building the capacity of our staff
to work with your children. This will include observation of teacher practice and feedback as well as working with
Leadership and specific groups of staff to further develop skills in writing student specific plans.

We are fast approaching the Queens Birthday weekend which means the Rotary Club of Wangaratta Book Fair is
drawing nearer! The venue for the Book Fair will be the CWA Hall on Templeton St, Wangaratta. The Book Fair
will run from 8am – 4pm on Saturday 10th June and 9am – 3pm on Sunday 11th June. There will be a cake stall and
sausage sizzle available on the day and we are hopeful that there will be over 10,000 books to choose from, ranging
in price from $1 to $7. Half of the proceeds from this event will go to our school so I would encourage all of you to
support this event by stopping by on either day and telling your friends to do the same. If you are interested in vol-
unteering in any capacity, could you please contact the school and ask to speak with me as I am coordinating stu-
dent, staff and family volunteers for the event. We will be looking for people willing to spend a few hours at the
hall doing various jobs to ensure the day runs smoothly.

This week we have been busy making our mums some beautiful art work for Mother’s day. We spent a lovely
day out in the sunshine and made butterflies using our footprints and handprints. We hope our mums loved them
and all the mums had a wonderful Mother’s day.
This week we also welcomed a new student to our class- Welcome Noah! We are very pleased to have you in our
class and look forward to getting to know you.

Cobbler - Sarah and Alicia
Bogong - Leanne and Tyler
In cobbler, last week we cooked muffin pizzas.
The pizzas were yummy!
I love pepperoni pizza– Bailey
I love cheese pizza– Logan
I love ham and cheese pizza– Aidain
I love ham and cheese pizza– Matthew
I love the ham, the cheese and the sauce– Jack
I love ham and cheese and pepperoni– Brandon
Bogong students completed a
Math activity learning about the
grams of sugar that are in some-
times foods. The learning inten-
tion was for the students to
spend $50 on junk food. First,
the students looked in shopping
pamphlets; they then cut and
paste the junk foods onto an A3
piece of paper. Second, students
had to add up the amount they
just spent. Third, students did a
Google search to find out how
much sugar was in each item.
Then the students had to divide
the amount of sugar by four. Mia
found out that there was 69 tea-
spoons of sugar in the junk food
that she had on her page. As
shown in her picture, that is a lot
of sugar.

Kosciusko - Richard, and Luke
Buffalo - Phillipa, Lisa C and Andrea
The Buffalo boys Cal, Victor, Tyler, Jamie and Sam have been really busy learning all about their numbers and playing some new maths games. They are enjoying learning new games and being able to count and work out who has more and who has less then others. Great job boys.
In science block we continue to work on our unit entitled
“Water”. We did some hands on experiments to learn about
further properties of water. We proved that water has a
‘skin’, can bend light and cannot be compressed.
In maths we have been investigating patterns, which were of
numbers, letters and objects. We have also been working on
ordinal number problems, such as identifying the fifth item in
a sequence.
In health we put together a table that identified whether a giv-
en food was “very healthy”, “reasonably healthy” or
“unhealthy” for us to eat. When we eat at morning tea and
lunch, we revisit the schedule to determine where our food
would be classified.

Mt. Beauty - Kate M, Tina and Sarah
Mt. Emu - Frazer and Jack
Mt.Emu
A busy few weeks in Mt.Emu! We have begun our swimming lessons every Wednesday at the YMCA Swimming Centre. We will be devel-oping our different strokes and working on our survival skills! A big focus has been made in identifying some strategies on how to combat swearing. The boys have suggested their own ideas, which include; Nicolas C – “replace the swear word with a normal word” Zak A – “Say the word in your head only”
Mt. Beauty have enjoyed a productive couple of weeks learning new skills. We were lucky enough to get a keyboard donated to our room (Thanks Sue!) and have enjoyed learning to play it. Everyone loves to groove to the beat in Mt. Beauty. We have also started our fabulous cooking program. Going to the supermarket to get our ingredients and we loving mixing them together to make yummy tasting food. We also love to read to each other in our room. It has been an exciting couple of weeks and we have loved being learners.

Morgan - Ryan, Stella and Jill
This week Morgan and Bogong joined forces to take the boys fishing during community access. It was a team building exercise for the male mem-bers of the two classes and everyone participated to the fullest. No fish were caught, but the boys worked well together to bait up and help each other cast their lines out into the river. It was a wonderful way to spend our afternoon, out in the sunshine with our mates. Great job team!

The Community Dental Clinic at North East Health
will be visiting Wangaratta District Specialist School
in the near future.
We have our own treatment room at the school
which will be used for check-ups, cleans and any
other treatment required.
We teach the children how to take care of their
teeth, how to keep their teeth clean and also which
foods are so important for great healthy teeth.
We would like to offer a check up of your child’s
teeth at the school, and we would then let you
know if there was treatment needed and make an-
other time for their teeth to be fixed either at school
or at our clinic here in Wangaratta.
If you would like your child to have a dental check-
up, please sign and complete the Application Form,
which will be sent home with each student.

We are exploring different Artists at the moment, and had a lot of fun
creating our own inspired “Jackson Pollock” pieces by popping balloons filled with paint and rolling marbles in paint.
Construction was also fun where we made our own “hydraulic” scissor lifts and we very excited when we saw them all working. We then experimented
to see what items we could lift up with them.

Hotham - David, Lea and Chris
We have had a wonderful couple of
weeks preparing for Mothers Day.
In Art we made clay pots, cards and
hair clips for our mums. In our class
with Lea, Prue, Teena and Chris we
made paper flowers which were
attached to a big picture of the boys
to look like they were holding the
flower.
From all reports our mothers abso-lutely loved all their gifts and total-ly enjoyed the day with their boys.

Mt Pilot – Jacqui, Treena, Sharon and Molly
Taminick - Lisa, Liz and John
Some of the students participate in swimming skills in the lap pool with Hop, while others are in the hydro pool with Molly and myself. This enables us to cater for the wide range of water experience our students have. Water play is a very important part of our swimming program and our students are having a great time whilst learning a very important life skill.
This week our class had a brilliant day out at
Pine Gully. All students practiced safety, were
good learners and so respectful.
And as you can see, students (and the staff) had so much fun!
This term the Mt Pilot girls
began their swimming program
at the Wangaratta Aquatic
Centre. We travel down with
the Mt Beauty students and
split into two groups.

We have begun our Work Related Skills project – “The Block – VCAL Style”. We have been gen-
erously donated 8 doll houses from members in the community, and working in groups we will be
looking at the carpentry industry and renovating the houses. We have been researching OH&S
procedures, writing letters to local community groups and gathering resources. It is an exciting
time for us here in VCAL – thank you to all who have contributed to our program so far!

Last Tuesday 9th of May, Warby went with 3 other senior classes to Winton to attend the Hands on Trades Ca-
reer Expo. We were lucky to have the opportunity to try out a range of different trades from hair and beauty, me-
chanics and many more. We also had the opportunity to discuss apprentices and career opportunities. Kostya en-
joyed discussing career options with people from the defence force and Tim and Sonia enjoyed looking more into
graphic design courses at GoTafe. Brydie had lots of questions about the Police Force. Jess, Simone, Sonia and
Brydie also enjoyed painting nails and doing hair with Monica from GoTafe. The expo was enjoyed by everyone.
