Newsletter Volume XXVI No.6 December 2009 www.glendalequiltguild.org GENERAL MEETING WEDNESDAY, December 9, 2009 6:30 PM “GQG’s Annual Holiday Potluck!” “Happy holidays…to you. Happy holidays…to you.” I can not remember what the next line to that song is, but I think Bing Crosby sang it in a lavish musical production number in either “White Christmas” or “Holiday Inn.” Which was it? Remember all those wonderful holiday musicals the movie industry used to make? Movies with marvelous costumes, graceful dancing and memorable songs. Songs that you could actually hum all the way home from the theater! Well, it’s going to be our pleasure to take a little trip down memory lane and get into a holiday mood as we welcome back the Arcadia High School Chanteurs. Their program delighted us last year and we are thrilled to have them return again. The Chanteurs have been singing, dancing, and enchanting the southland for fifty-three years. For those of you who missed the program last year, the Chanteurs are a marvelously talented choral group and I do mean MARVELOUSLY TALENTED. They were one of the first groups to combine a choral presentation with choreography. The thirty-two member group, consists of eighteen girls and fourteen boys, and is currently under the direction of Mr. Rollie Maxson. Their musical program for the season will include many holiday favorites. Come and enjoy this wonderful group as they sing and dance to such popular tunes as “Sleigh Ride”, “Winter Wonderland” and “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow.” The presentation will also include more humorous songs, like “You’re a Mean One, Mister Grinch.” This is truly an event you do not want to miss. Remember to check the “Hospitality” section for your food assignments for our potluck. Mark your calendar, put on your party clothes and come for an evening of wonderful food, delightful entertainment and the great fellowship of your Quilt Guild. Embrace the holidays with the heart of a child. Find joy in the little things: the sounds, the scents, the decorations, and the spirit. Be with family real or adopted. The President’s Block

Even the most overbooked among us can surely set aside a few hours to create some heartfelt gifts, sew a simple stocking, a cute ornament, or a cheery wall hanging. So find the time to tell the people you treasure most exactly how much you love them. Don’t worry about tarnished silver, or a centerpiece not working. But most importantly, find that time to celebrate the miracle of Christmas!

I wish you a Merry Christmas! Love,

Your friend, Heidi

“A Very Merry Christmas to All!”

The holiday season is certainly the busiest time of the year for most anyone, and even more so if you’re a crafter. We all want to create the perfect holiday atmosphere in our homes and make amazing gifts for friends and family. We also decorate to perfection to entertain our guests. Don’t even get me started on the baking of traditional cookies! I’m beginning to break out in a cold sweat thinking of everything to do! The holidays are like a warp-speed version of our regular lives, crazy, busy, and so many to–dos. We are supposed to slow down and let the reverence of the season sink in. RIGHT! Well, I’m going to try my best.

I’m unpacking and reminiscing about

the handmade ornaments my boys have made; with their pictures placed in cookie cutters, and painted wood clothespin Santa’s; the quilted ornament exchanges from guild friends, and the very special ornaments from my Mom and family. And oh, the quilts made through the years with matching pillows - what holiday memories in getting them done to decorate the home! There’s a sentiment that can’t be bought in all these treasures. So I have now inspired myself into doing just a quick new project - another holiday quilt of course!

2009 Bylaws Review This year the Board has undertaken a Bylaws Review. The last review was completed in 2002. For some of you, this is far from fascinating. For the others, in an effort to make this process as transparent, informative, and accessible as possible, the Proposed Revisions to the Bylaws will be posted in small sections on the Guild website. Where: Website MENU: Resources, Bylaws Timing: Postings right after the Board has reviewed the section of Proposed Revisions . As postings occur, announcements will be available in the Newsletter, an email, and at the meetings. Contact: Nan Maples, [email protected], or at home: 626 449-3132 and leave a message that you have questions about Bylaws.

PS: The Christmas Pot-luck for the Executive Board & Extended

Committees, will be at the home of Heidi St. Royal

December 7th @ 6:00 pm.

Glendale Quilt Guild Executive Board Meeting Mary Ann Kroening’s Residence November 5, 2009 Present: Heidi St. Royal, Margie Emmons, Nan Maples, Nancy Mraz, Margie Emmons, Corrine Gurney, Alice Smith, Susan Edwards Heidi opened the meeting at 6:45 pm. The October board minutes were approved as printed in the Newsletter. Margie presented the treasurers report and reviewed each item. The report was approved. Comments about the Newsletter included what a huge job it is, how nice it is that there are pictures in each section, and the reason that it was posted on the web site late was that the web master was on vacation. Barbara stated that the November, December and January meeting programs are confirmed. The fat quarter exchange for December will be holiday prints, for January – ethnic fabric, and February – valentines. Corrine showed the sample for the 6 inch block exchange for the December meeting. And Heidi proposed that in the spring we do a “loose change” exchange, that is, nickels = 5 inch squares, dimes = 10 inch squares, and quarters = 25 inches or fat quarters. We could start in April. Apologies to the new members who did not have their names published in the Newsletter or receive a Newsletter due to the illness of our membership chairperson. Thank you to Dovie Kapoh and Barbara Stuart for stepping in to cover the membership desk. Highlights of the 2010 Show committee held last week are 1) a DVD set to original music for only $7.50, 2) a drawing for GQG members only to win a gift certificate to a spa for entering an item in the show, booking a hotel room and attending a workshop, and 3) the Sunday luncheon/auction. Other business announcements included: locating the hospitality procedure book; asking Esther to send email-tree message about the change of general meeting from Wednesday to Tuesday; the possibility of renting extended vans for a trip to Road to California Quilt Show in January. Printer liaison, Nan, announced that printing has been going well at Nestlé. She explained how the size of the page and number of folds and stapling, and color effect the cost. For example, changing the size of the Show program from a half page size to a standard

size will save money. Another issue is adding a page to our roster to include the new members and corrections such as address changes. Everyone agreed that mid year would be a good time to do this. Nan presented some of the proposed changes by the bylaws committee. She and the committee members would like an open dialog about it. Email Nan any comments. Alice moved that the bylaws committee be authorized to spend up to $100 to obtain the official corporate documents from the secretary of state as needed. The motion was seconded and carried. The next meeting board meeting date may be changed. Heidi will notify everyone. It will be at Heidi’s house. The meeting was adjourned at 8:40pm. Respectfully submitted, Susan Edwards Recording Secretary

2009 Bylaws Review instructions are to: 1. Organize [Bylaws] in such a way that all or most

information on a given topic is found in one place. 2. Propose movement of appropriate material to the

Standing Rules. 3. Update all topics that may involve electronic

communication. 4. Produce an Index for easy reference. (They will

also produce a Table of Contents and a Timeline.) 5. Adopt consistent Headings and Style Formats. 6. Identify topics for updatin.g An addition to the Board, a Revision Review Team consists of: Carol Andrews, Betty Fisher, Pat Grim, and Mona Hobson.

Glendale Quilt Guild General Meeting Glendale Central Library November 10, 2009 Heidi St. Royal called the meeting to order at 6:40 pm welcoming our speaker, Lisa Coulombe. Announcements included 1) the huge amount of items given last month were distributed by Pat Grim and Alice Smith to the unfortunate; 2) thank you to all the unsung heroes who worked so hard on the opportunity quilt and show; 3) there is lots to be thankful for this November. The minutes were approved as printed in the Newsletter. The treasurer’s report was given by Margie Emmons. Nancy Mraz announced that the nomination forms for the honorary life membership award are available. The vice-president, Sharon Bishop, will collect them. Corrine Gurney proposed that at the December meeting there be a gift exchange of some sort. A vote was taken and an $8 quilting related gift wrapped in fabric won the vote. Participation in the gift exchange is voluntary. Corinne showed the 6 ½ inch block exchange for the December meeting. Then, Barbara Gibson announced the programs for the next 2 meetings. Sandy Bradfield asked that everyone send in Newsletter items in on time especially since the holidays are approaching. Next, Caren Ryan introduced all the members of the 2010 show committee and their jobs. Many members made announcements including volunteers are needed for Road-to-California, button necklace class samples are here tonight, postcards of the opportunity quilt are available tonight (all were distributed), quilt block challenge samples were shown, an auctioneer is needed, criteria for the spa draw was stated, Harriet Hargrove classes are full, and polo shirts are now available. This evening there are 2 new members, 2 guests and 106 members present. Pat Grim announced that she has received 40 -50 quilts from Margaret McNeal. Peggy Shiffman showed the 12 quilts, one for each month, that she made for Loving Hands. The guild library will be closed in December and January.

Brandi Nalley displayed the article and large picture of last years show about our guild as the “best bet” in the calendar section of today’s, Glendale Press. There are 16 turkey blocks for block-of-the-month which were won by Margaret McNeal and Corinne Gurney. Pat Rollie showed the tree and/or house pattern for next month’s draw. Phyllis O’Conner won the fat quarter draw. Las Pulgas group did their usual great job decorating the room with fall quilts and a splendid hospitality table. Both Bev Johnson and Heidi St. Royal showed their many projects for show and tell. And there was a parade of kimonos. Door prizes were provided by Pat Rollie and Beyond-the-Reef. After the break, Lisa Coulombe entertained us with a fashion show of 50 of her 75 jackets that she made. She stated that she prefers to quilt jackets to wear as this is a practical way to show off her quilts. Her embellishments of beading, embroidery, and use of specialty threads in long wavy lines were impressive. Her techniques using Angelina fibers and embroidered circles would compliment any quilt. The meeting was adjourned at 8:50 pm. Respectfully submitted, Susan Edwards Recording Secretary
