From Sister Nancy …

What a team!

Our valued volunteers, faithful funders and precious partners joined forces to serve 11,098 breakfasts and 16,634 dinners to some of Hamilton's most vulnerable citizens during this particularly blustery 2013-14 winter which we now rejoice is finally behind us.

expressed their appreciation for

HOOTC Strategic Plan As Hamilton Out of the Cold entered its 17th year of operation, it was

decided that we should re-evaluate what we do and where we are heading

over the next five years. A grant was applied for and received from the

Trillium Foundation to pay the consulting fees.

The strategic planning process included a series of meetings with “2WA

Consulting”.

Three focus groups were held – one with Board members, another with

volunteers and another with guests.

Members of the Strategic Planning Committee interviewed and

completed questionnaires with representatives from various community

agencies. The results were tabulated by 2WA Consulting and resulted in

revisions to the mission statement, values and vision statement.

The following Strategic Directions are to be investigated and considered

over the next 5 years:

o the need for HOOTC on the mountain o providing some meals for women and children exclusively o becoming better known in the community o expanding fundraising o revising volunteer recruitment

We thank 2WA Consulting for their assistance throughout the process and we look forward to investigating the recommended Strategic Directions.

Christmas Gift Giving Early in November at Christ’s Church Cathedral, guests were given early

Christmas packages. Guests of Out of the Cold came through the line to

receive a bag of toiletries then proceed to a table to choose a scarf then

to the next table to choose a hat then to choose a pair of socks and finally

to choose a pair of gloves or mitts. Towards the end, we were running

out of gloves. A fellow asked for gloves and I gave him the last pair. He

said he only needed one glove as he only had one hand. The next

gentleman asked if we had any gloves. I said “We only have one glove

left.” He said, “It's better than nothing!"

The Ancaster Film Fest is half way through its

eleventh year providing the best in Canadian and

International films to the Hamilton region while donating all

of its proceeds to charities and service organizations.

Since inception, approximately half of the proceeds have been given

to the Hamilton Out of the Cold program in recognition of the

fantastic service this wonderful organization provides for those in

need during the five coldest months of the year. In 2014 so far, the

AFF has donated $4100 to the Hamilton Out of the Cold Program. We

at AFF feel honoured to continue to be able to assist HOOTC in this

way.

Our 2014 season at Ancaster Silver City has four more screening

dates to follow in August through to November. Memberships are

sold out for 2014 but non members are always most welcome, $9 at

matinees and $10 in the evening.

Coordinator Johanna’s Christmas Verse sent in tribute to her volunteers

T’is the night before Christmas, and I’m pondering anew What I’d do without my trustworthy kitchen crew.

On Thursday last, Concocted without nary a complaint,

Chicken soup emerged – fit for a saint.

Multiple hams were dissected with care In preparation for the 63 guests that soon would be there.

Scalloped potatoes were the “spuds du jour,” Green beans and raisin sauce completing the gastronomic tour.

All of a sudden, but who did appear? Central’s choristers – heralding good cheer. Their a cappella carols delighted our guests,

Thank you choristers – you’re simply the best! Profiteroles with fruit, some mused, “What might that be?”

“Sounds like a drug” – dessert unlocking the mystery.

STONECREST FARM “COW”

While driving home from Toronto last November, Christine

Christensen and Gail Wilkinson (HOOTC Board Chair and longtime

volunteer) got to talking about Out of the Cold and the wonderful

dinners that are prepared each day for HOOTC’s guests.

Christine and her husband Karl are Gail’s long time friends and

owners of Stonecrest Farm. Their farm has a 50 head herd of Red Angus

purebred beef cattle, grass fed and hormone free.

Christine offered to donate the meat from one of the cows that was

going to market the following week! The result was a gift of 350 lbs of

ground beef ~ a very generous donation!

Our guests and cooks were absolutely thrilled with the donation.

Special thanks to Christine and Karl for their generosity!

Some Excerpts from “A Volunteer’s Perspective” (Used with permission)

“The Hamilton Out of the Cold Program started in the hearts of Sister

Carole Anne Guay, a Sister of St. Joseph and her friend Gloria Colizza.

Both of these women are retired teachers from Hamilton.

Sister Carole Anne approached Pastor Don Berry Graham at James

Street Baptist Church about opening its doors to serve hot meals to the

poor and homeless from November to March. She saw a need in the

downtown area and acted.”

“That first Monday we had gathered in the kitchen all having had

our tuberculosis tests. Some were friends of Sister Carole Anne, some

were Sisters of St Joseph and many were church volunteers from

James Street. We were excited and nervous. What if no one came?

What would we do with the food? That night we served about 60

people and HOOTC was on its way. I will never forget the first night

when we stood in a circle before we opened the door and prayed for

the people outside and ourselves. This has been a tradition that has

been honoured throughout the years.”

“It was the friendship of the volunteers that kept me coming back,”

“My husband also volunteered for HOOTC at James Street when the

Knights of Columbus helped with security when the program did

overnights. Many a night he would come home at 1 a.m. after sitting as

security so the homeless could sleep secure in the knowledge that they

and their belongings were safe.” Continued in next column

“I have met so many wonderful volunteers and clients over the

years. This year along with dishwashing, I have helped with the juice

pouring. Some of the clients were taken aback when I started asking

them if they wanted red or yellow juice by their name or when I called

them Sir or Ma’am. I have also stepped in as security twice.”

“I have been a massage therapist since 2006. Since I purchased the

clinic, I have been giving HOOTC volunteers the friends and family rate

for massage. I have closed my clinic every Friday from November to

March at 3 p.m. so I can come and volunteer. Only two snow storms,

two vacations and several days of flu have kept me away. During my

time with HOOTC, I have met and married my husband of almost 10

years. I have been inspired to go on a Mission Trip to Haiti, in Cap

Haitian, for two weeks. I have started and finished two streams of

school and have started a new career. It has seen me through the

sudden deaths of both my parents within five months of each other. “

“I have grown in my faith and as a woman. God has blessed me with

lifelong friendships. God has given me the spiritual gift of service and I

have served gladly and willingly with HOOTC for 17 years. God is now

leading us in another direction. We have sold our house and business

and will be moving to Prince Edward Island at the end of May.”

“I will be looking for new ways to serve the Lord through

volunteerism down east. God has blessed us so much during our life.

As we leave the HOOTC of Hamilton community, I leave but one

challenge. I hope some other volunteer (other than Margaret Firth who

has also been there since the beginning) beat my record of years’

service with HOOTC.”

Thank you to Elise Tapley-Ryan and her husband for their many dedicated

years of service at HOOTC. We wish them all the best in their future

endeavours.
