Newsletter No. 6 Term 3 - September 2019

From the Principal, Peta KourbelisWe have had a fantastic Term 3, highlighted by the various events that both staff and students were involved in.

Teacher Professional Learning As community interest in our Space School grows, teachers spent time during our Student Free Day to refocus our curriculum. The day began with every teacher participating in workshops led by their peers. Space School and STEM garden activities were used to inspire teachers to think outside the square and to incorporate Space Exploration curriculum in their learning area. In the second part of the day, teachers worked in teams, continuing to develop strategies to assist students to improve in their Literacy and Numeracy skills. This remains a key focus for us as we know developing good literacy and numeracy skills among all young people is fundamental to the life chances of each individual.

Year 11 News

The start of Term 3 has been extremely busy for the Year 11s. We have had multiple outside agencies come in and share with the students about a variety of important topics during our Pathways sessions. Specifically, we had the Sammy D foundation come in and share prevention programs aimed at changing the attitudes of young people concerning the impacts of bullying, violence and alcohol fuelled violence. These programs are aimed at educating young people about the negative impacts of violence and providing them with strategies to keep themselves and their mates safe. We also had the South Australian Police come in and share with the students about responsible and safe driving practices. This week we get the privilege of having the Port Power come in and share with the boys about preventing violence while the girls will also have a different and separate program targeted towards them as well. This term is quickly coming to a close and soon the Year 11s will have a much deserved break.

YEAR 12/ MATHSYear 12

Term 3 and Term 4Year 12 students are close to completion and are busy finalising their last pieces of assessment and preparing for exams. As Year 12 students prepare to submit their final assignments over the coming weeks, they will need to ensure that they are maximising their study time and using it appropriately. Year 12s are encouraged to use the Senior Study Centre and also the Homework Club on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Planning one’s study time is crucial in order to make the most out of this crucial time.During the term break, the College is offering our Year 12 students a final Holiday Workshop. All Year 12s are

encouraged to attend for support and maximise their success. These workshops are important, as they will focus on finalising assignments and/or exam preparation. A timetable will be posted home and be available on Daymap next week. During the holidays, the Senior Centre will be open for independent study every Monday – Friday, except Monday, 7th of October. Students must use their break effectively by attending holiday workshops, finalising assignments and studying for exams. Students with exams need to study and revise content from Term 1, 2 and 3. Re-reading content is not sufficient, students need to do questions from their text book and practice exams.

Pathways During pathways this term, students successfully participated in a range of presentations and workshops about skills to success from a variety of organisations, including Elevate, Sekseed and SAPOL. Students also participated in career pathway workshops. Marion City Council

presented last week and discussed options for students next year. SATAC applications are now open and students had the opportunity to research and apply for courses through the SATAC website, including TAFE and University.

Formal and Graduation Year 12s can purchase their Formal ticket from Student Services. We encourage all Year 12s to attend, as it is a great evening to celebrate their achievements with their peers. Tickets for the Year 12 Graduation can now be collected from Student Services, at no cost to families. Letters have already been posted home regarding details about both events, which are held on Thursday, 28th of November. The staff at Hamilton Secondary College look forward to sharing these special events with our Year 12 students and their families. If you would like further information, please do not hesitate to contact me at the College.

Paper Plane CompetitionThe Year 8 Maths classes recently set their sights on paper plane records. In a unit in which the criteria for successful flight were measured and analysed, students competed in several competitions- the flight covering the greatest distance, the flight of longest duration (time aloft) and the flight landing closest to a target. The longest flight recorded was 21.5m and the longest time aloft, when thrown from 1.5m high, was 6.28 seconds. Prizes were awarded to Jerome Wanganeen, Dhrae Wanganeen, Laith Albawi and Tyla Grant.Whilst we did not break any world records, a lot of fun was had as we learnt about glide ratios, pitch, roll and yaw, and many other mathematical concepts involved in flight dynamics.

MAPS/ SCHOOL FEESMAPS

Current MAPS student, Isaac Doman, has had his film work recognised in a feature ABC news article ‘Filmmaker with autism Isaac Doman shines at Kangaroo Island Film Festival’. The link to the article is:https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-09-02/young-filmmaker-with-autism-shines-at-film-festival/11467486This month, two of Isaac’s films were featured in Kangaroo Island's From The Heart Film Festival — an event sharing uplifting and inspiring stories from across Australia. Isaac and three MAPS students travelled to Kangaroo Island for the event: From the Heart Film Festival

The MAPS building is a hive of activity now that all the 2019 Diploma and Advanced Diploma film shoots have been completed. We are busy in post production, with editing, creating titles and VFX, organising for music to be composed and colour grading the films. We have also swung our gaze to 2020, holding our first open night on the 22nd August. Over 70 people attended to learn about our exciting and dynamic course that offers a doorway into the film industry. Alumni Catalina Moller (2018) happened to drop in that night and she shared the news that she is about to start working on Mortal Kombat in the camera department. It’s rewarding for staff to see our past students land jobs in the competitive film industry after just one year of study with us.

INTERNATIONAL

International News

Term 3 has been the busiest time for our International Program. We had a record intake of new students. This includes new Graduate Program students from Vietnam and China who are here for the long term and a large number of shorter term Study Abroad Program (SAP) students from Japan, Hong Kong and mainland China, Belgium, Brazil and Chile. SAP students stay for various times in our mainstream classes, which might be as little as half a term to 1 year. We also have two exchange students from Finland and France. Our Intensive Secondary English Course classroom has been very full and productive. Some of these students will stay up to 5 years for all of their high school program. In addition to this we have hosted 3 back to back Study Tours which are short visits here to improve English and learn about Australia. The Hong Kong Federation of Youth visited us for the first time with 20 students and 2 leaders. Ushiku Senior High School from Japan made a return visit with 17 students and the Hiroshima University brought 11 students to Hamilton. Our Space School and STEM facilities are internationally renowned and were enjoyed by the Study Tours. They also enjoyed excursions to the City, the Adelaide Hills and the Gorge Wildlife Park. Hamilton Secondary College hosted the IES Homestay information night on August 29. It was so well attended that we believe 110 families were represented. Thank you to the amazing homestays for looking after all of our international students so well. If you would like to be involved in this program please contact Ms Silvana Correani to find out more.International students enrich our cultural mix and help our local students to feel more a part of the global community. We have an Ambassador’s Club which encourages

student friendships and leadership qualities. Our Hamilton Buddies are invaluable to help out with Study Tour groups, learning to be tour guides, host ceremonies, make short welcome and farewell speeches and generally extending their cultural awareness as good global citizens. An opportunity is coming up soon for Year 9 students to apply for the Mishima Scholarship and win a trip to Japan.

Mishima Scholarship ApplicationsYear 9 students are invited to apply for the 2020 Mishima Scholarship trip to Japan. There will be one winner to represent HSC. The winner will travel with 6 students and 2 teachers from other schools in the Southern Area Network. You will travel in the April school holidays 2020. Students will wear Mishima High School uniform, go to school and live with a host family in Japan. There is a visit to Tokyo Disneyland and some cultural sites around the Mt Fuji region.

The scholarship pays for flights, accommodation, most meals and entry fees. The winner will need to have a valid passport, spending money and about $100 for an insurance policy. During the time in Japan as the winner, you will need to be an excellent ambassador for yourself, your family, your school and South Australia. All Year 9 students are eligible, however, Ambassador Club members, buddies and students of Japanese language and culture are especially encouraged to apply. Please see Mrs Botting to collect an application form which must be submitted by 19 September. Interviews will be conducted to select the winner in the last week of term.

Hamilton Unit

The students in the Unit have been working hard on all of their subject

areas. The senior students are in the final stages of completing their SACE subjects, making sure they have collected enough evidence for their portfolios. Last week, they were given a bit of a breather by

having a day at the show.
