FROM THE PRINCIPAL

NAPLAN Congratulations to all Year 3 and 5 students for their efforts with the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy. Thank you to our teachers who worked extremely hard to prepare all students to do their best. Results from the assessment will be available later in the year, around September.

HOMEWORK POLICY – Endorsed by School Board After much professional debate the staff and School Board at Hocking Primary School are pleased to share with parents our Homework Policy which will further encourage our school community to work together to foster skills and attitudes for successful, lifelong learning.

Our policy acknowledges that children need time after school for extracurricular activities, for relaxation and for family time and that physical activity is very important. It is for this reason that we expect all children to be as physically active as possible after school on every day of the week and on weekends.

Teachers will not set homework for homework sake but will encourage regular reading and the consolidation of literacy and numeracy skills as these are very important. We believe that all students benefit from practising these skills at home either on their own or with family members. On occasions overnight tasks may be set that directly related to an aspect of the day’s learning, a research assignment that requires time management by the student or for the completion of daily classroom learning tasks.

Where approval has been provided for students to go on a vacation during the school term, in excess of one week, the only expectation will be for students to keep a personal travel diary to assist them share their experience with others in their class on their return. Teachers will not provide curriculum based work for absences of this type.

In summary, the school expectations are:

Regular reading and numeracy practice.

Completion of student work unfinished during assigned class time.

Participation in research or information gathering to support classroom learning program.

Involvement in physical activities.

Teacher will provide further specific details about how their homework will be structured to support this whole school perspective.

SEMESTER 1 REPORTING TO PARENTS Printed reports are due to be sent home to parents on Monday 26th June. This semester we’ll also be trialling an electronic delivery component for the reports. If you already have a parent login for Connect you’ll find your child’s report will also feature electronically on the same day. If you don’t already have access to your child’s classroom connect page please either contact your child’s teacher or stop in at the front office for a registration form.

Electronic reporting provides the following advantages for schools and the parent community:

timely delivery of reports to parents and guardians;

administrative savings in the printing and collation of reports;

an ability to easily provide copies of reports to each parent or guardian where dictated by family circumstances; and

parents being able to retain a digital record of student achievement.

I would like to provide the School Board with a summary of the electronic reporting process at the conclusion of this reporting period. The more parents I have with access to Connect the better our understanding of any potential benefits or difficulties so I’d encourage all parents to take up this opportunity.

AUSSIE OF THE MONTH

Due to Paint Storm last week we will be holding two assemblies in the next fortnight. Aussies of the Month for May and June will be announced at each assembly and their details will be published in the next available newsletter.

Steve Hardingham – Deputy Principal

WHY DO CHILDREN BULLY? There are lots of different reasons why children bully others. Some young people have given the following reasons:

They might get power and strength from bullying others;

Bullying is a way to try to be popular and to get known at school;

They are scared, so they try to scare others to hide their feelings;

They are unhappy and take it out on others;

They are being bullied themselves; and

As a way to make people be your friend.

How much bullying is going on in Primary Schools? Being bullied

45% of Year 4 students and 49% of Year 6 students in Western Australian schools reported they were bullied by other students at least once last term. When asked about the types of bullying these students experienced the majority reported teasing (42%), hurtful name calling (43%) and being excluded from groups (40%).

In both Year 4 and 6 the perpetrators were most likely to be students from the same year group and, to lesser extent older students. Both boys and girls who were bullied were more likely to report that the bullying was perpetrated by mainly one boy followed by a group of boys and to a much lesser extent by girls in a group or alone.

Approximately 50% of children reported they were bullied at recess and lunch time. This compares to 15% of Year 4’s and 22% of Year 6’s who report being bullied in the classroom and between 10% and 15% on the way to or from school.

34% of Year 4 and 29% of Year 6 students reported they told someone the last time they were bullied. 55%of Year 4 and 6 students reported that if they were bullied they would tell their parents, 50% of Year 4’s and 39% of Year 6’s reported they would tell a teacher and 37% of Year 4’s and 44% of Year 6’s reported they would tell a friend.

In general, primary school students report being bullied more often than secondary school students.

Bullying Others

16% of Year 4 students and 35% of Year 6 students in Western Australian schools reported they bullied other students at least once last term. The most common forms of bullying reported by Year 6’s were calling other students hurtful names (23%), hurtful teasing (20%), excluding another student (18%) and physically hurting another student (12%). Year 4’s were more likely to report excluding another student (12%), using hurtful names and teasing (10%) and physically hurting another student (8%).

ECE BUSY BEE - 10th June Calling all Hocking Parents, we need your help. We are hosting a busy bee on the 10th June from 9am - 4pm to create some new play spaces for the Early Childhood outdoor area. There will be plenty of food on the day and a sausage sizzle for lunch from 12-1pm. This will be an adult’s only event; no children will be able to attend due to power tools being used. However, children will be welcome to come down at the conclusion of the busy bee to see what you have helped create. If you are interested in helping out please write your name on the volunteer sheets displayed on the Early Childhood notice boards. Any time you are able to volunteer will be greatly appreciated. THANK YOU FROM THE EARLY CHILDHOOD TEAM

A massive thank you to Paul Evans for his amazing hard work and effort in creating a wonderful pvc pipe xylophone for the children in Early childhood. They are sure to have endless amounts of fun exploring their musical creativity
