SENIOR EXECUTIVE REPORTIt is difficult to believe that we are almost half way through the term; it seems to have gone by so quickly. This is probably because students and teachers have been so busy achieving in a wide range of areas; both inside and outside of the classroom.

Premier’s Reading ChallengeI was honoured to present awards to our students who have displayed their passion for reading through their participation in the Premier’s Reading challenge and I would like to thank both of our local politicians; Geoff Provest and Justine Elliot for sponsoring these awards and giving up their time to come and congratulate the students.

I would encourage every student to read and to access the wide range of books we have in our library; with everything from graphic novels to the classics, along with a range of biographies and non-fiction texts. Many studies have shown that students who read fiction have greater mental health and resilience.

Sporting eventsStudents participating in the Sports Development Program (SDP) have been involved in our annual sports excellence camp; learning about the life of elite athletes and what it takes to perform at this level.

Other students have once again been involved in the Human Powered Vehicle competition in Toowoomba; with the junior team taking out third place. The team have been provided with wonderful support from our P&C, who donated shirts and caps to the team. Our P&C is small in number, but large on impact and I would urge anyone who has ever considered coming along to a meeting to join and come along to the Christmas party, so you can meet these wonderful people in a social situation and find out how you can support our students by becoming a member.

LeadershipI was privileged to join the SRC students for breakfast at their leadership camp. I always enjoy spending time with our future leaders and seeing what they are planning for their fellow students in the year ahead. Following this camp a smaller group of SRC attended the GRIP leadership day at Griffith University last week and have been excited to share what they learnt with the rest of the team. SRC are focussing on having more structured activities to bring students together, as well as to raise money for charity. On Wednesday they held a very successful bandanna day to raise money for cancer and have a handball competition coming up.

Adam Lewis and Amelia Watson have also participated in the first consultation meeting about what we would like to see in future learning spaces at our school and it was extremely valuable to have student input into this process.

On the 21st November representatives from our student leadership team will once again host leaders from across the Tweed Shire for a Tweed Leaders day where they will recap their learning from the last session, share their achievements and plan for 2020.

HSCThe HSC examinations are drawing to a close; with final examinations early next week, followed by the Year 12 formal at Q1 in surfers Paradise. Student feedback about the exams has been largely positive and I look forward to celebrating the completion of schooling with Year 12 next Wednesday evening. I also expect that students will receive information about the outcome of their early entry University applications next week; which will give many of our students another reason to celebrate.

It’s wonderful to see our students living our school values. Their teamwork, respect for one another and their school, their willingness to grasp opportunities and achievement of excellence across academic, sporting and cultural domains make me very proud, and they do this while looking out for one another and creating a safe and nurturing environment. Ms Leisa Conroy, Principal

MEET OUR HUMAN POWERED VEHICLE TEAMS!On Friday 25 October, Tweed River High School took two teams to Toowoomba to compete in the 8th and final event of the Queensland HPV Super Series. The teams consisted of students from year 7 through to year 11. Riders competed in the heat of the day for 8 hours around a great undulating smooth surfaced track, completing over 120 laps of the 1.44km circuit. The Open Senior Boys came about mid-way.

The Junior Mixed Team managed an equal third place to great excitement, although there were trackside protests by other teams as the electronic timer malfunctioned near the very end of the race when a student unfortunately tripped off the power leads (luckily not a TRHS student!).

Congratulations to all who participated! It was a big weekend with the overnight camping at the Agricultural Show Grounds and the long journey by bus to Toowoomba. Huge thanks to Mr Arrowsmith and Mr Emsley who work hard behind the scenes for the HPV here at Tweed River High. Thanks to Ms Craigie who accompanied the team and organised all the cooking and to Mr & Mrs Mackney who turned up on the day of the races to provide support. We couldn’t do it without you!

YEAR 9 ATP SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITIESAs part of Year 9 Geography, students worked in groups to develop a sustainable community. They were given a brief about what was to be included and they had to source and research the most suitable materials and alternative solutions.

Students were to produce a site plan, a specification document which listed materials to be used and reasons for their choice, also a brochure which included the the philosophy and mission statement of this project. Students produced work of a high quality and found some innovative solutions.

These are being displayed in the library. Ms Wolthers, HSIE

SPORT REPORTOn Tuesday 29th of October Tweed River High School participated in the NSW CHS U15 Regional Netball Knockout Gala Day at Arkinstall Park.

Their Round 1 match was against Murwillumbah High School which they won 41-8.

In Round 2 the girls played Byron Bay High School, winning 26-21.

In Round 3 and Knockout Final TRHS played Kingscliff High School. They were defeated 46-20.

The girls did exceptionally well to make it to the final and should be proud of their results, as they were required to play each of their games with only 6 players.

Thank you to Miss Florence who helped with supervision on the excursion.

NSW DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION AND COMMUNITIES LEARNING & ENGAGEMENT WWW.DEC.NSW.GOV.AU

Compulsory School Attendance

Information for parents

Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. NSW public schools work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children and young people. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.

What are my legal responsibilities?

Education in New South Wales is compulsory for all children between the ages of six years and below the minimum school leaving age. The Education Act 1990 requires that parents ensure their children of compulsory school age are enrolled at, and regularly attend school, or, are registered with the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards for homeschooling.

Once enrolled, children are required to attend school each day it is open for students.

The importance of arriving on time

Arriving at school and class on time:

• Ensures that students do not miss

out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day

• Helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine

• Give students time to greet their friends before class

• Reduces classroom disruption

Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by parents.

What if my child has to be away from school?

On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:

• being sick, or having an

infectious disease • having an unavoidable medical

appointment • being required to attend a

recognised religious holiday • exceptional or urgent family

circumstance (e.g. attending a funeral)

Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. However, if the school has not received an explanation from you within 2 days, the school may contact you to discuss the absence.

Principals may decline to accept an explanation that you have provided if they do not believe the absence is in the best interest of your child. In these circumstances your child’s absence would be recorded as unjustified. When this happens the principal will discuss their decision with you and the reasons why.

Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified.

Travel

Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.

In some circumstances students may be eligible to enrol in distance education for travel periods over 50 school days. This should be discussed with your child’s school principal.

Dear Parents of Year 10 Students

Year 10 students have the opportunity to participate in a week of work experience in Term 4.

Work experience is a fantastic opportunity for students to try out a job they are considering aiming for in the future, to get a better appreciation of working life, to network locally for part time and casual positions and to build employment skill sets. We highly recommend your students involvement in this program.

The following points should be noted:

Students are required to seek out their own placement. Approaching employers, providing a resume and following up leads is all reflective of a real job search and is an important learning task for students who are often engaging in this process for the first time. The careers adviser and work experience coordinator are there to provide support and assistance at all times.

We encourage students to “think big”. Options are wide and varied and not restricted to our local area.  The preferred dates for work experience are noted below.  Students work a normal working week for their place of employment. The placement is considered part of

their schooling and any absences from work need to be communicated to the school & employer.  All students will be provided with documentation to plan in for this experience.   All documentation should be fully completed and handed in to your careers adviser or work experience

coordinator at least two weeks prior to the placement.  Students on discipline lists are not eligible for work experience.  Placements involving work on job sites will require a White Card.  All general information has been given to students so they can start organising work experience. Please

contact Tweed River High School if you would like any additional information.  Work experience can be challenging, fun and a huge learning experience for students. Every year we enjoy

hearing about these rewarding experiences.

Alcohol and Young People Trends relating to young people and alcohol are improving. Specifically, there has been an increase in the age at which young people first try alcohol, from an average of 14.8 years in 1995 to 16.1 years in 20161. Also, fewer people aged 12–17 are drinking alcohol and the proportion abstaining from alcohol increased significantly between 2013 and 2016 (from 72% to 82%). However, whilst more young people aged between 12 to 17 years of age are abstaining from alcohol than in previous years, in 2016 almost four and a half million people in Australia aged 14 or older (22%) reported being a victim of an alcohol related incident.2 Current research suggests the brain is not fully developed until about 25 years of age. Binge drinking alcohol before this age can result in permanent brain damage3, affecting memory, learning, decision making and problem solving. For more information on the effect of alcohol on the developing brain, http://darta.net.au/factsheets/ Recognising the serious impact of alcohol on young people, NSW Office of Liquor and Gaming have changed the laws regarding supply of alcohol to young people. Under Section 117 of the New South Wales Liquor Act 2007 it is illegal to supply alcohol to people aged under 18 years in a private home unless it is supplied by: the child’s parent or guardian, or an adult who has the approval of the child’s parent or guardian. A person convicted of secondary supply in NSW can be fined up to $11 000 for each underage drinker involved.  Mental health Drinking at a young age increases the risk of mental health problems. For more information or support contact Beyond Blue www.beyondblue.org.au 1300 22 4636

Par t ies - Wi l l You Al low Alcohol a t Your Young Person’s Par ty? Many parents and carers will be helping young people in their family celebrate birthdays, special occasions, finishing their school year or leaving school.

Regardless of where the function will be held, it is against the law to obtain for, or supply alcohol to anyone under 18 years of age - even at private parties. This activity is called secondary supply of alcohol - an offence that carries a maximum penalty up to $11,000 and 12 months prison. On the spot fines of $1100 can also be issued by police. This information comes to you from the NSW Department of Liquor, Gaming and Racing. Check their website for further information: https://www.liquorandgaming.nsw.gov.au/community-and-stakeholders/underage-drinking/parents-supplying-alcohol-to-minors Points to consider:

What do you do if an underage guest arrives with alcohol?

What do you do if they arrive intoxicated?

What do you do if your alcohol has been consumed during the course of the party? It is much easier to plan and control what happens at your next party if you follow some simple guidelines. Here are some suggestions that can make a difference:

Ideally RSVP invitations should be issued, giving as many details as possible about times of starting and finishing, the nature of the party, a dress code, how it will be supervised and how guests will return home. Indicate guests will be required to bring their invitation for party entry.

On the invitation, suggest guest parents contact host parents to fine tune details and discuss any concerns. This will ensure parents are not pressured against their better judgement and gives everyone permission to talk about supervision, safety, alcohol and drug issues.

Have only one entrance or exit to make it easier to control who attends your party.

Guest lists should be kept to a manageable size. If guest numbers are large, ask other parents to assist with supervision or consider hiring security personnel.

Host parents need to be aware of appropriate return transport for guests and/or provide overnight, supervised accommodation. Ensure you have alternative arrangements for guests who are drivers, and for guests who are passengers without fit drivers

Make it clear in advance it is an alcohol free party. (Parents are reminded of the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing penalties cited earlier).

Alcohol at parties is not easily supervised. Alcohol can easily be consumed in advance or mixed with soft drinks prior to the party. Alcohol may be left outside in cars or hidden in bushes. Although these problems can occur, they are less likely if the party is well supervised. Light up dark or hidden areas. Lock off areas of the house that are not easy to monitor. Avoid punchbowl drinks that may easily be spiked.

Remove BYO alcohol from under 18s and return this to parents or carers.

If guests are a mixture of under and over 18s, there is less control over the consumption of alcohol. A nominated adult should serve alcohol and can require IDs prior to serving.

Actively serve non-salty food and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the party. Attractive non-alcoholic drinks are a great alternative! Provide easily accessible cold and room temperature water, “Mocktails”, non-alcoholic punches, fruit juices, soft drinks, coffee and tea. This will slow down alcohol consumption for those who are drinking.

If under 18s consume alcohol or other drugs during the party, their parents should be contacted and asked to collect them. Parents should be advised of unacceptable behaviour. Ensure you have the contact details, not just of guests, but of their carers/ parents.

Be firm about excluding gatecrashers. If admittance is by invitation only, gatecrashers are less likely. Prior to the party, encourage students not to broadcast party details in the school community, or via social media/mobile phone apps. If many gatecrashers arrive, ensure the safety and safe exit of invited guests by cancelling or postponing the party.

Parents should be present and provide active supervision throughout the party.

At the end of the party, try and speak to all guests before they leave. If anyone is unfit to drive, make alternative arrangements for them and their passengers.

If you are planning a large party, it may be a good idea to employ security guards A useful website to help you plan a successful party and avoid problems: https://adf.org.au/alcohol-drug-use/young-people/safe-partying/hosting-teenage-party/
