Student leadership is highly valued at
Westlawn PS. As part of their ongoing
leadership roles over their last year at
Primary school, our Year 6 students develop
skills and knowledge about leadership
through a number of channels, including the
Burn Bright Leadership program which the
Year 6 students completed during Term 1. We
strongly believe that leadership potential is
in all children and we have high
expectations of all Year 6 students in
leading and demonstrating this capacity to the
best of their abilities. We expect them to be
positive role models for younger students by
demonstrating responsible, respectful and
safe behaviour. Those Year 6 students who
have qualified for their leadership role will
be presented with their Leadership Badges
at the Award Assembly at 1pm on Wednesday
10 April. Parents are most welcome to attend
the assembly.
Bus Zone
Road Safety around schools is a shared responsibility. Children are considered vulnerable road users and as a community we each have a role to ensure safety in school zones is a priority. School zones are planned with children’s safety in mind. Local Council, NSW Police, Roads and Maritime Services, bus operators, school staff and P&C all work closely to ensure students enjoy safe journeys to & from school.
Parents & carers also have a key role. Stopping & parking in Bus Zones is not a safe drop off or pick up space – this area is reserved for large vehicles (buses). An inspection by Roads and Maritime Services in partnership with the school raised concerns around this practice in the Cassia Street Bus Zone. A banner has been installed on the fence to remind drivers not to stop or park in this zone. Drivers are asked to please park safely & legally, even if this means walking your children from the car to the school gate. Under the NSW Road Rules - Stop in Bus Zone (school zone) - $337 fine & 2 demerit points. ALL speeding and mobile phone offences in a school zone carry Double Demerits all year round. This information is from the Roads and Maritime Services (RMS). Parent/Teacher Interviews Parent/Teacher Interviews will be conducted this week and next week to provide information about areas of progress your child has made and areas in which they can improve. Please make sure you have arranged an appointment with your child’s teacher. Westlawn PS Cross Country Next week our school Cross Country will be held on Tuesday 9 April at Barnier Park, Junction Hill. All children in Years 3 to 6 are to attend the carnival. All primary teachers are at the carnival so there is no supervision arrangement back at school for primary children.

Please make sure hats and sunblock are packed, along with lunch, recess and a water bottle. P&C Meeting and Canteen Meeting Our final Canteen and P&C Meeting for the term is on Wednesday 10 April at 6pm in the Meeting Room. We welcome parents being involved in the school. Please come along and meet the committee and other P&C members, and be part of a group of parents who make a great contribution to the school. Easter Raffle Last week tickets were sent home with students for the P&C Easter Raffle. The P&C is asking for donations of Easter eggs or chocolates for raffle prizes. The eggs do not have to be expensive, just whatever parents can afford. The eggs get bundled up into prize packs. Last year we were able to give out over 30 prize packs plus we gave a prize to the student who sold the most tickets. Any tickets sold or unsold must be returned to school by Tuesday Monday 8 April as an audit requirement. If you are unable to sell the tickets please return them immediately so we can re-issue them to someone else. Please send any Easter egg or chocolate donations to the school office. The raffle will be drawn after the Easter Hat Parade on Friday 12 April. The P&C Raffle will be drawn on Friday 12 April after the Infants Easter Hat Parade which starts at 11:45am under the Primary COLA. Parents are most welcome to attend.
Primary Disco The Primary Disco is Thursday 11 April from 6:30 to 8pm in the hall. Cost is $2.50. The theme is ‘Hippy’. Please make sure children are collected at 8pm. The proceeds, as always, go to the Year 6 Farewell. At each disco, refreshments are sold. We always ask parents of year 5 and 6 students to volunteer for selling the refreshments, if possible, as their children will
benefit that year or the following year from the discos, by covering the cost of the Farewell. If you can assist, it would be appreciated. Please see Mrs Hadley if you are able to assist. International Competitions (commonly known as Uni of NSW Competition) This year these competitions will be conducted online at school. They will not be occurring until later in the year. The information regarding the competitions will be sent home at the end of Term 2.
Have a great week, Trish Ellis Relieving Principal
SRC Citizenship Award
The SRC present a weekly
Citizenship Award at our
Primary Assembly. Each
week we meet to discuss
what encouraging things we
have seen happening in our
playground and classrooms.
The SRC look for behaviours
that are helpful,
demonstrate our school
rules or an act that shows a student as a
positive role model for others. We then
nominate children we have seen displaying
these behaviours. Last week the SRC focussed
on finding children who were displaying
excellent sportsmanship.
The students who were nominated by SRC
representatives are Aliya Eastment, Sidonia
D’Souza and Sophie Johnson. We all voted.
The award winner has been seen and
heard…always displaying sportsmanship when
playing soccer, always happy even when she is
not winning and is always the first one to
shake the opposition’s hand at the end of a

Over the coming weeks, the SRC are looking
for students displaying excellent
sportsmanship.
Westlawn PS Cross Country Carnival
The WPS Cross Country Carnival will be held
next Tuesday 9 April at Barnier Park, Junction
Hill. The carnival commences at 9:30am
sharp so all children are asked to be at the
ground by 9:00am.
A bus will leave Westlawn at approximately
8.50 am for children who arrive at school by
bus to link up with the rest of the school at
Junction Hill. The same bus will bring
children back to school at approximately
1:30 pm. This travel option should have been
indicated on the returned permission note.
The annual carnival provides the children with
the opportunity to feel part of their House
Team so full attendance at the carnival is a real
necessity for the school.
The cross country will be run along similar
lines to the athletics carnival. Parents are
welcome to walk the course with the children.
The start line will be on the Westlawn Soccer
Fields next door to Terry West Oval. This
would be the best area for parents to sit and
view the carnival however there is no seating
so parents are advised to bring their own.
Competition is in the following divisions: GIRLS and BOYS

8/9YRS (2000m)

There will be no canteen in operation. Please
pack plenty of food and water. All children
must be protected from the sun with hats, T-
shirts and sunscreen. All children are
encouraged to wear a T-shirt in the colour of
their house team or their sports uniform.
Otherwise, a coloured ribbon or the like can
be worn. Parents are not required to put
themselves to any expense in providing the
house colours. It may be a good idea to pack a
jumper or tracksuit in case it turns cool. There
is a Department directive that shoes must be
worn in all events.
HOUSE COLOURS

Students who suffer from asthma should
follow their asthma management plan on this
day. Any children who need puffers, epipens
etc. will need to bring them along.
Children need to have a note if they are going
home with another parent.
In the case of inclement/dangerous weather
conditions, an announcement will be put over
the local radio stations and placed on our
school’s website and Facebook page after 7:30
am on the morning of the carnival. There will
only be an announcement if the carnival has to
be postponed. The back-up date for this
carnival is Thursday 11 April.
Students who finish in the first 6 in their
age division will progress to the Clarence
Cross Country Carnival to be held at
Junction Hill on Tuesday 7 May 2019 (T2

Round 2
Westlawn PS travelled to Iluka last
Wednesday to play Chatsworth Island PS and
somehow we avoided the rain! Chatsworth
Island had a team of young, inexperienced but
enthusiastic players who were keen for a
game. Westlawn won the toss and elected
bowl. The Chatsworth Island boys were
playing their very first game of cricket on a

‘real’ pitch using a hard, leather ball and
wearing all the protective gear. They struggled
to score many runs but they certainly gave it
their all, were big on courage and enjoyed the
experience immensely. Westlawn were able to
dismiss Chatsworth Island for 14 runs.
Bowling figures were: Zane Farrell 2-1, Ted
Hill 1-0, Kade Simpson 0-1, Blake Norrie 1-1,
Jaiden Moran 2-3, Eli Jones 0-1, Noah
Woodbury 0-1, Hayden Biele 0-4, Sam Buggy
3-0 and Tyla Spinks 1-2.
Westlawn’s opening pair, Kade and Reece
Winters, went about their job in quick time,
chasing down the runs needed in the second
over. Both sides then agreed to continue play
so all players could have a bat and bowl.
Round 3
Westlawn took on South Grafton at JJ
Lawrence Fields last Friday. Again, the
weather looked a bit dreary and the ground
was a little wet from some overnight rain but
conditions improved throughout the day.
South Grafton, who had a gritty win over
Grafton PS in the previous round, had a young
and inexperienced team but were full of
confidence going into this clash. Westlawn
won the toss and sent South Grafton in to bat.
Their opening batsmen were watchful and
showed plenty of determination and skill as
they dug in for the first few overs. They took
early runs where they could. Ted Hill then hit
a good length and knocked the stumps over.
Zane Farrell supported him well, giving away
just two runs. Kade Simpson and Blake Norrie
then continued the attack, bowling without
luck. South Grafton were progressing well to
be 1 for 20 off eight overs. Wilson Moore
relieved any pressure that was beginning to
build on the fielding side by taking a much
needed wicket. Jaiden Moran backed him up,
conceding only 5 runs from his spell. Eli Jones
and Noah Woodbury then took a wicket each.
Hayden Biele and Sam Buggy missed out on
the wickets today but Tyla Spinks and Kade
both managed to snare a wicket each. South
Grafton scored a total of 86 runs form their 25
overs. A very good effort.
Bowling figures were: Ted 1-8 from 3 overs,
Zane 1-5 from 3 overs, Blake 0-2 from 3
overs, Kade 1-13 from 3 overs, Jaiden 0-5
from 2 overs, Wilson 1 -19 from 2 overs, Eli
1-4 from 2 overs, Noah 0-6 from 2 overs,
Haden 0-10 from 2 overs, Tyla 1-4 from 2
overs and Sam 0-6 from 1 over.
Kade and Zane opened the batting for
Westlawn and looked rock solid. Kade raced
to 9 runs before possibly losing a little bit of
concentration and putting up and easy catch to
point. Westlawn were 1 for 18 off two overs.
Enter Sam Buggy! We all know Sam hits a
heavy ball but he was in a real mood when he
strode to the crease. He and Zane took total
control of proceedings by chasing down the
remaining 69 runs in less than 8 overs. Sam
was brutal, smashing 8 boundaries on his way
to 40 runs (retired) from just 16 scoring shots
and Zane was just as impressive also retiring
on 42 runs. A fantastic performance.
Westlawn PS will next play the winner of the
Bellingen PS v Macksville PS match.
Tennis- PSSA Knockout competition- Victor J
Kelly Trophy
Last Friday our school
Tennis team consisting
of Aiden Rasborsek,
Ethan Johnston, Eliza
Berrick and Keira Gaeta
Played Grafton Public

enthusiasm in very humid conditions. Each
competitor played a singles, doubles and
mixed doubles match. Congratulation to Eliza
for winning a very tough and close singles
match 7-5. Unfortunately Grafton Public
School were too strong for us on the day and
took the win 47 games to 19.

Lettuce crunch! This week is Vegetable Week!
What is The Big Vegie Crunch? Only around 5% of NSW children eat enough vegetables. To help our community do better, our school will be taking part in The Big Vegie Crunch (part of Vegetable Week) at 10am on Thursday 4th April.
Primary schools across NSW will be joining together to break the record for the most students crunching vegetables simultaneously. Last year 50,260 students crunched together.
What can you do to help?
· Pack a container of fruit or vegetables for your child to eat on Thursday 4th April
· Keep serving up the vegetables at home and in your children’s lunchboxes!
