Messages from the Headteacher
Dear Parent/Carers
Operation Christmas Child - Shoe Box Appeal - Thank you once again to all our
students and their families for their amazing generosity in supporting the Operation
Christmas Child Shoe Box Appeal led by Mrs Foulger. This year we collected 265 shoe
boxes, not quite as many as last year’s number of 291, but still a fantastic amount. The shoe
boxes will make a real difference this Christmas to many children around the world who would
otherwise get nothing.
Sporting Success - Many congratulations to Kieran Gibbs who has been selected for the UK
roller hockey team and will be travelling to St Louis, USA to take part in an international tournament next year. Kieran
is also taking part in trials to play for the England U16 ice hockey team. Well done Kieran!
Christ the King Parish Mass - Many thanks to all the staff, students and parents who supported our Parish Mass at
Christ the King last week. As always we received a very warm welcome from Fr Tim Menzies who celebrated mass, Fr
Tom and the parishioners. Thanks also to all the parishioners who supported the cake sale after mass and helped raise
money to support the students who will be travelling to Lourdes next May - it is much appreciated .
Year 9 Parents’ Evening Advance Notice - We look forward to seeing all Year 9 students and their parents at
Parents’ Evening on Thursday 7 December, from 4.30-7.15pm. Subject staff and will be on hand to discuss targets and
the progress being made on your son/daughter’s individual courses. All Year 9 parents should have received a letter
about the arrangements for the evening and how to book appointments using the online booking systems.
Adverse Weather Procedures - Now the wintry weather is upon us, I would like to remind parents and students of
the procedure should extreme weather conditions force the school to close. Parents will receive notification by text
message and also a notice will be posted on the school website. In addition to this Coventry City Council will carry the
information along with local radio stations (BBC Radio Coventry & Warwickshire; Free Radio; Heart FM; and Touch
FM). Please do not block the school switchboard with calls to enquire if school is open. Please remind students of the
importance of being safe travelling to and from school during the winter evenings.
I hope you all have a lovely weekend, Mrs Marina Kelly, Headteacher

Weekly Prayer At times in our lives we may find it difficult to pray. Perhaps we don’t know what words to use or we might not
feel close to God. In the Gospel Jesus gives us a solution; he shows us how to worship God through prayer. He gives
us the words to use, words that bring us nearer to God. Today we thank Jesus for his guidance and love and ask
him for the grace and strength to persevere in prayer. Amen

David Walliams Day – Wednesday 23rd November 2017
On Wednesday next week we will be celebrating the hugely popular children’s author David Walliams
and promoting his latest fiction book Bad Dad. The library will be hosting activities during lunch and
break based on his vast collection of books. We will also be showing a film adaptation of one of his
books during lunchtime, and an audio version of Awful Auntie will be played for the students around the
school to enjoy.
This coincides with a trip on Thursday when we are taking 48 of our Year 7 and Year 8 students to see a performance of Awful Auntie at
the Alexandra Theatre, Birmingham which should be a thoroughly enjoyable experience and we are all extremely excited about going!

Primary School Confirmation Retreat Day
On Thursday we welcomed Year 6 students from our feeder primary
schools to take part in a retreat to prepare them for their
Confirmation.
We took time out to think about the fruits and gifts of the Holy Spirit,
to learn more about our faith and to think about how we share faith
with others.
A huge thank you to the student volunteers from Years 9 and 10 who
helped to lead all the activities and to all the staff and students from
our feeder primary schools.

STEM Day with the Smallpeice Trust
On Wednesday, the school again welcomed the Smallpeice Trust for a STEM Day (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths), on this
occasion for a group of approximately about 60 students in Year 11. The challenge they had was to solder together a circuit board to
connect a mobile to a speaker so that it could act as an amplifier. An attractive case had to be built to hold the amplifier along with a
one minute advert filmed on an iPad to promote it and an outline plan on how to make a profit from its sales. The
students were not only very skilled in their construction of the electronics but remarkably creative in their case designs
and advertising pitches. Overall a very positive day on which the students really impressed the Smallpeice staff that lead
the event. As in previous years, we are ambitious to have further activities with the Trust in 2018, hopefully to include the
university placements that have proved so popular in the previous two academic years that they've been run.

KS5 Debate
On Wednesday 15th November, 4 students
from Year 12 (Ben Court, Emily Fletcher,
Harry French and Saffron Spry) travelled to Newman University to
participate and compete in a public speaking competition. Upon
arrival, each team selected a motion at random and had to argue
either for or against their topic. The topic selected was to argue
against Same-Sex Education and the team was given an hour and a
half to research and plan their speech complete with a secondary
rebuttal. Students were given access to the library and laptops but
could have no assistance from teachers or other adults. The
presentation itself was performed by two members of the team
(Ben Court and Saffron Spry) in front of the other schools, with the
proposers and opposers of each motion at the front. Although we
did not win the overall competition our team scored a total of 56
points, with the winning team scoring at 62 out of 70. The
experience on the whole was a positive one as it forced us out of
our comfort zones and allowed us to experience public speaking in
a different setting. When we go back to the next competition in
March, we will return with a renewed sense of confidence and the
knowledge that we are made for greatness.

Coventry Blitz Virtual Reality
Experience
This week was the anniversary of the Coventry blitz
that took place 77 years ago. Coventry University
invited us to take part in their new virtual reality programme where we were
able to explore and experience what it was like during the Coventry blitz. I
had the opportunity to learn what it was like to be a firefighter and the
challenges they faced. All I could see were repeated flames which seemed so
realistic! I also experienced what it was like to be cramped inside a bomb
shelter whilst listening to the sounds of the aeroplanes close by. It was a fun
and excellent opportunity which made history come alive!

‘The Wind in the Willows’ Trip - Year 7
The English Department have an exciting opportunity for 90 Year 7 students to see ‘The
Wind in the Willows’ at the Albany theatre on 8th December. This classical story about Mr
Toad facing the possibility of losing Toad Hall and being rescued by Ratty, Mole and Badger,
is an incredibly playful production that we are sure all students will want to see to get into
the Christmas spirit. As there are a limited number of spaces, Year 7 students should see
their English teacher without delay in order to secure a place.

Ski Austria 2019
A reminder that the next ski trip will take place from Friday 15 to Saturday 23 February 2019. We will be
staying at the Hotel Leitner, Nassfeld, Austria, a hotel geared towards providing everything a school ski party
needs to have a memorable trip. This is also the hotel we have stayed in since the first ski trip in 1992.
We have chosen to travel with PGL who are market leaders in providing successful school ski tours. They are financially protected by ABTA
and ATOL and also accredited by ‘Learning outside the Classroom’ and the School Travel Forum. You can find out more at
www.pgl.co.uk/ski
The cost of the trip is £983 which can be paid in full in December 2017 or in instalments. The price includes coach travel, full board and
accommodation, lift passes and ski equipment hire, a two hour lesson at the Snowdome and an ‘Après Ski’ hoody so students look the part.
Priority will be given to Years 11 and 10, but all students can apply.
Letters can be obtained from the PE Department or from the school website. If you require any further information, please contact Mr
Minshull.

Mr P Wells
Last year we donated over 800 Advent Calendars to children in
Coventry. Such a small thing can bring joy to others at this time of year.
This year we would love to match that number ... could we give more?
Please donate either an Advent Calendar or contribute to a collection that
your tutor group is organising for calendars.
