MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS SENIOR SCHOOL NEWS

Week 4 of Term 4 - we are almost halfway through this term as Term 4 is 9 weeks. It is great to see that most students have hats and are wearing them. It is getting warmer so just a reminder about sandals as they need to have a support that goes around the back of the ankle. If your child has practical subjects they will need to bring closed shoes to be able to participate, as per WHS guidelines.

As mentioned in the last newsletter The Year 9 Careers Camp happened in Week 1 of Term 4. Here is a write up from Ms Groves:

The students were amazing. Well behaved, polite, considerate and engaged. They walked all over Adelaide and the surrounding suburbs (and still had energy to stay up late at night!) and hiked up and down the Flinders University Hill. Some of the places we visited included Adelaide University, Flinders University, Adelaide Metro Fire Station, Haighs Chocolate, Adelaide Oval, Adelaide Gaol, Regency TAFE, Parliament House (and met Adrian Pederick), Adelaide District Law Courts, Adelaide Zoo, Central Markets, Glenelg and Marion.

Middle School are holding an assembly on Wednesday this week (8th November) in lesson 6 at 1:30pm. The 6/7 class will be running the assembly; classes will share what they have been doing for the term and Push for Excellence certificates will be presented. Parents are welcome.

Upcoming events for Middle School are:

Presentation Day 17th November – this is a great morning where students are recognised for their achievement in all areas. I hope that awardee parents can come along and see their child/children receiving their awards.

Year 7 Aquatics - 20th and 21st November – please remember to bring your note in and pay ASAP. It is a great experience for students and it’s an opportunity for students to participate in river water sports safely.

Year 8/9 EZ Surfing - 22nd November – this a great day where students learn to surf. Just a reminder that students are responsible for making sure they are sun smart. Please bring a rashie (swimming t-shirt) and reapply sunscreen regularly. Teachers will remind students but it is ultimately the student’s responsibility.

Christmas Tree Festival - 24th November – this day is great for students to participate in a community event and show how respectful we can be. Students may bring a little money to buy some great gifts for Christmas or just for themselves.

White Ribbon Day - 24th November – Students will be asked to participate in wearing a white ribbon which symbolises putting a stop to domestic violence and to show that we are taking a stance.

To be a good student in Middle School you need to have a high attendance and engage 100% with your learning in class and with homework. You need to strive to achieve your best and challenge yourself. You need to complete all the work to show evidence of learning to your teachers. Asking questions and telling the teacher you need help are important. Not all students have been achieving this or to their best potential. Middle School staff have decided that as of 2017 and beyond, students who have not provided evidence of learning or have large gaps in their learning maybe suggested to consolidate their learning in the same year level the next year. This is to ensure they are successful in their future schooling by filling the gaps, but also to show that it is important for students to have evidence of learning and that it’s important to show all the qualities of a good student that I mentioned above.

Year 12 Exams are being held over the next two weeks. We wish all our students sitting them the best of luck and remind them to pace themselves and do their best. Week 4 Monday 06/11 9.00am - 12.00pm Biology Wednesday 08/11 9.00am - 12.00pm Modern History Thursday 09/11 9.00am - 11.00am Essential Maths Thursday 09/11 9.00am - 11.00am General Maths Friday 10/11 9.00am - 12.00pm Legal Studies Week 5 Monday 13/11 1.30pm - 4.30pm Physics Wednesday 15/11 9.00am - 12.00pm Chemistry Year 11/12 Subject Counselling The Year 11/12 Timetable has been constructed commences in Week 6. I will be meeting with the students and their families next week to finalise this. Students will be given a letter and timetable for the rest of this year and for 2018 by the end of the week for parents/caregivers to agree.

Outdoor Ed Camp

A group of Year 11 students took part in a low impact Bike Camp during the first week of term as part of their Outdoor Education course. It is a 210 km ride from Myponga Reservoir back to school via Normanville, Goolwa and Langhorne Creek. The ride is broken into four sections with an overnight camp at the end of each day. The group camp at Robinson Hill (half way between Normanville and Victor Harbor) on the first night; the second night is spent at Goolwa and the last at Langhorne Creek. The group initially travels to the Reservoir by bus where they have lunch then ride towards Normanville. The ride to Goolwa is longer and has more physically challenging sections. From Goolwa the students cycle to Langhorne Creek which is relatively flat as is the final leg back to Mannum. The students had to navigate, erect their own tents and were responsible for cooking their meals. Special thanks to Georgia McLaren and Kevin Colla from ‘Bike About’ for accompanying and supervising the riders. Bryan Wilsdon

Year 10 Work Experience

At the start of Term 4, Year 10 students spent a week in various the work places to get a ‘first hand’ experience in their proposed career focus areas. This was to fulfil part of the requirements for PLP (Personal Learning Plan) as well as to help them plan for the last two years of high school.

This experience provides insight on various careers the students are interested in, in a way that a typical classroom cannot. It has been rewarding to listen to the feedback from the students and the decisions some of them have made moving forward. I found work experience to be valuable. My time at Mason Real Estate Agency provided me with an insight on the work that goes on within this industry. I loved the clerical duties I had assigned to me and learning about REST – a software program used to manage the properties the agency is in charge of. Chelsea Barber

I enjoyed my time at River City Pets. I find it hard to pick one thing that I loved the most because the whole experience was amazing. There were animals everywhere…what more could anyone ask for! Jemma Gurr

The Art of Appreciation

Gratitude/appreciation is one of the trickiest concepts to teach

children. Thankful children are more polite and pleasant to be

around, but there's more to it than that. By learning gratitude, they

become sensitive to the feelings of others, developing empathy and

other life skills along the way.

How do we teach ‘gratitude’ to our kids?

Work gratitude into your daily conversation -

Have kids help – children enjoy being helpful and when they are

shown appreciation for their efforts it becomes less of a chore but an

enjoyable experience for everyone involved.

Encourage generosity - donate toys and clothes to less fortunate

kids, go through the toy box and wardrobe and donate unwanted,

outgrown toys and clothes to charities or pass them on to family and

friends.

Practice saying ‘Please’ and ‘Thank you’ or ‘Can I help you?’ – By

role modelling and encouraging your child to use these simple words

they will not only learn the skill of gratefulness but be thankful and

appreciative for the kind things people do for them.

Be patient – learning gratitude won’t happen in a week, it will take

time, practice and lots of reinforcement. The end result will be a

happy, cheerful, helpful and grateful child.

Students in the Junior School have been extremely grateful and

appreciative for all the fun and amazing new activities that have been

introduced over the past couple of weeks. I have seen lots of huge

smiles, heard roars of laughter and singing and so many students

have said how awesome these new activities are. I truly appreciate

these simple gestures of appreciation and it’s pleasing to see the

students really enjoying themselves.

The Mannum Way: Play is the Way update It’s exciting to see so many staff and students using Play is the Way key concepts and self-regulation questions as they work hard to show strong decisions and actions. The Junior School have been busily reviewing Key concept 1: Treat other as you would like to be treated. They are also playing the Piccadilly Circus game (ask your kids about it) so they can practise manners and respectful behaviours. It’s been a lot of fun. All Middle School staff will be attending the 1-day Play is the Way training later in November which is very exciting. It will be great to see them using the concepts throughout the rest of 2017 and into 2018. If you’d like to understand more about The Mannum Way (our wellbeing program) or Play is the Way specifically, please pop in, make a time or get in touch via phone. I’d be very happy to make you a copy of the posters for use in your home.

Building Family Opportunities (BFO) - Supporting families with members out of work

BFO helps families who have members out of work for a long time by providing intensive support and assistance. The program provides a holistic and tailored approach to support the family as a whole with the goal to enter the workforce. The program assists people to overcome barriers of getting into the workforce by providing ongoing support in regards to advocacy, goal setting, linking with services, job readiness and increasing work capacity, and linking with training opportunities.

Young people and adults in each family are assisted to complete secondary education and/or participate in pre-vocational, learning and skills development programs that lead to employment.

To be eligible for the program a person in the household has to have been on Centrelink benefits for a minimum of 12 months and there must be a person aged below 24 years old living within the household.

Mid Murray Family Connections Network—Update Attendance and Engagement video on its way! Our school recently took part in a 5-school project to film a short video about the importance of regular attendance and focussed engagement in learning. The project included Morgan PS, Cambrai PS, Swan Reach Area School, Palmer PS and us. A film-maker from DECD travelled between sites over a 3-day period to take footage of students, parents, mentors and staff. We are looking forward to the final product and will let you know when it’s ready to be released across the region. If you’d like to discuss student attendance at any time, please get in touch. Regular attendance is directly related to success at school so it couldn’t be more important! Best regards Bobbie Wellbeing Leader

WORLD VISION SPONSOR CHILD SUPPORT Welcome Tharujan from Sri Lanka

My name is Tharujan Laxshan and I am 5 years old. I was born on 10 May 2012. I live in Sri Lanka. Life for me and other children in my community is very hard. We live high up in the mountains. Our families struggle to grow enough food due to natural disasters and crop damage from wild animals. Children get sick from dirty water and our schools don’t have good facilities. Please sponsor me and take part in building a brighter future for me and my community.

Tharujan’s community is supported by World vision through the Walapane Project. This is a mountainous rural area about 180km from the capital. The climate is sub-tropical and 34,000 people live here. Most people are labourers or farmers, but poor farming knowledge, natural disasters and crop damage from wild animals make it hard to harvest enough food.

Child malnutrition is common and health services poor due to lack of medicines, staff and unreliable access roads. Lack of clean water, toilets, and health and hygiene knowledge all contribute to the spread of waterborne diseases. Schools lack facilities and trained teachers, so education standards are poor.

Our school community has a great opportunity here to support Tharujan in his quest to gain an education and to lift the standard of living in his village as a whole. Thanks for your ongoing generous support during our SRC fundraisers. Private donations are gladly received via the front office.
