A Message from the Principal

Dear Parents and Community Members,

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome back all of our students and families to another school year at Truganina South Primary School. I would also like to extend a warm welcome to all of our new Prep families and all new families across the school.

We have had a very smooth start to the school year. The teachers and Education Support Staff have worked hard to ensure a successful transition to a new year for all of our students. As expected we had yet another surge in growth. Our projected enrolment of 700 by census day on February 28 is well on target. We currently have 683 students enrolled and a number of students still enrolling daily.

At Truganina South Primary School our Core Purpose is to provide a 21st Century learning environment that is safe and secure and which empowers students to become independent, lifelong learners so that they become active and effective global citizens of the world in which they live. The staff spent the three days before the students returned unpacking:

What it means to be a 21st Century School and Highlighting the skills 21st Century Learners need to be equipped with.

There are many excellent videos and articles on line which really highlight the importance of delivering 21st century curriculum to our 21st century learners.

I think this quote sums it all up very well.

“21st century schools are designed, not to ‘fill up’ students with particular kinds of existing knowledge, but to increase students’ ability to learn, independently and with others, and to produce new knowledge. http://www.shiftingthinking.org/?page_id=182”

Our Coffee morning next Monday will be focussed on, “What is 21st Century Teaching and Learning?”

If you are available after assembly please come and join us.

Have a wonderful week!

Curriculum Report

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all new families to our school and to welcome back to all our families returning to Truganina South PS! This year is shaping up to be another busy year. All students across the school will be working on units of work around learning to learn. The focus question that all students will investigate is "What is a successful learner at Truganina South Primary School". It's very important that all our students understand how they learn, what helps them to learn and what environment they work best in. Over the term please take the time to talk to your children about what they have learnt about learning! I am sure your will find your conversations very interesting. At Truganina South Primary School we work very differently to other schools in the area. We do not operate as classes but as communities. What this means is that students will not have one teacher or be allocated to one classroom. Each community has a number of teachers and support staff which are there to work with all students. We do not operate in home groups within the community. As parents you are able to speak to any teacher within the community about your child. Below is a table informing you of all community staff members. Each community will also have a Pedagogical Coach. This person will assist the staff to meet the needs of all students. They will work closely with students, staff and parents. If you would like to know more about how we work please join us at our first coffee and chat session in Diamond Community (room 5) on the 11th February straight after assembly.

These goals will be communicated regularly with you through a communication book. Once goals are achieved, new goals will be set. Please make sure you take the time to check these communication books to keep up to date with your child's goals. We will be offering a Parent Helpers course during term 2 for all interested parents. The course will run over 4 weeks and aims to provide parents with the necessary information to help out in the classroom. Dates of this course will be provided in future newsletters.

STUDENTS WITH ASTHMA According to the Asthma Foundation if you are using a puffer to take your asthma medication,

you should always use a spacer as well, regardless of whether you are taking your daily

preventer or using your blue reliever during an emergency. If you have not already provided a

spacer to the school we recommend that you do so as soon as possible. More information can

be found at :

MONDAY MORNING

COFFEE GROUPS

Please feel free to come to

our coffee morning straight after

assembly on Mondays. We will be

covering a variety of topics of interest.

Traffic Safety… We now have 683 students attending Truganina South Primary School. After school pick up time is

a very busy time. Traffic congestion is heavy. Please be patient and careful at this time. We have

had some serious breaches of Road and Parking Rules which have put our students at serious risk.

We are planning to trial a pick up zone at the front of the school. Staff will be supervising this to

ensure that parents are not parking in this zone- but driving in, picking up and departing

immediately. We are working with the council to have parking signs erected.

Be aware that infringement notices are being issued by council attendants. The safety of our students is our number

1 priority. Please drive carefully around the school zone.

School commences as 8:40. Children arriving after 8:50 will be classified as late and will be required to collect a

late pass from the office.

BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL CARE

IMPORTANT NOTICE RE CARPARKING

The YMCA staff and parent clients have been unable to access their building due to

school parents parking in their staff & YMCA parent car parks. Therefore the YMCA will be closing

their Car Park gates every morning. Please park OUTSIDE the YMCA carpark.

Lost Property

Please ensure all student property, particularly clothing items, are clearly named.

Our school cannot accept responsibility for per-

sonal items brought to school e.g. toys, jewellery, electronic devices, mobile phones and money

Students are requested and reminded to hand any items considered to be of value to their teacher for safe keeping at the beginning of their

respective school days.

The Janome Sewing Shop at the Werribee Plaza will embroider items such as school hats for a reasonable price.

This way hats can be identified quickly.
