EVENT UPDATES

IVY GANDHI YOUTH CAMP 2012 BY: SHIROY RANJI

JULY 2012: ANNUAL ZAGNY SUMMER PICNIC

The Annual ZAGNY Summer picnic will not be held this July due to the upcoming XVI NAZC in August 2012. We hope to see everyone next year at the picnic which, as in past years, promises to be a fun community get-together.

The Ivy Gandhi Youth Camp 2012 or Z-Camp as it has been affectionately called over the years was off to a rip rollicking start on the weekend of June 1st. The three-day camp was held at the Darbe Mehr, Pomona and was attended by 12 campers ranging from 6 to 16 years in age.

Friday evening started with campers enjoying a yummy kheema dinner and ice cream brought by the parents. After dinner the kids gathered for an informal discussion on our Zoroastrian religion, what it means to each of us and how we can apply it in our daily lives. The relevance of Good Thoughts, Good Words and Good Deeds brought out some interesting insights with each camper committing to do one good deed the next day and also at home.

Saturday: after an early breakfast, campers were off to Bear Mountain for our annual hike. We are proud to say that all the campers (even the 6-year olds!) climbed all the way to the summit. It was a hard climb but a great pleasure to see the older kids helping and encouraging the younger kids along the way. Great team work! A rewarding hot pizza lunch was well earned and much appreciated by all. After dinner, we had a roaring bonfire with s’mores being devoured faster than marshmallows could be roasted on the bonfire.

Sunday: with a sumptuous breakfast in our stomachs, a soccer match was played by the enthusiastic campers on the front lawn of the Darbe Mehr. Camp was adjourned around noon, giving the kids time to pack up and clean up before Religion class. Campers left with many friendships being strengthened and a close feeling of comradeship between all.

Our thanks to the parents for the Friday night dinner and to the chaperones who made this event possible, enjoyable and kept our kids safe.

Keen interest has been received from ZAPANJ (New Jersey), ZAGBA (Boston) and ZCDMW (Washington DC) - we hope to have a combined camp with some of our other associations next year.
