DATES TO REMEMBER !
FROM the COMMUNITY EDUCATOR I hope you have all been enjoying getting out and about and enjoying
our mild temperatures so far this year. By the time you get this
newsletter I am sure we will have felt the bite of Winter.
The various groups across the region continue, check out inside the
back cover for what is happening over the Winter months.
The daytime group in Taupo had a great turnout for Toni Naera from
Life Unlimited Hamilton, I always find some new and innovative ways to manage
the challenges of life contained within her van.
The evening group in Taupo had an enjoyable and informative session with Victoria
from Lifestyle Potential. In Rotorua both the Care Partners and Education group
have enabled people to share and learn from others. The Coffee Group at the Lake
front Café continues to be well patronised.
I attended a two day Grief workshop by Piers Heaney (grief counsellor) in April and
as well as incorporating the learnings into my everyday practice, I will share some
of the “takeaways” with groups over the next month.
Rachel and I are well established in our new premises now and most of the teething
problems have been resolved, if you are planning on coming and visiting us then it
would be best to ring ahead to make sure we are here and available.
On Sunday the 15th of May a group from across the region met at Mind Junction for
lunch. Although the Lunch choices were a little limited everyone seemed to enjoy
meeting and being challenged by the puzzles liberally spread across our table. Some
puzzles although challenging to figure out once shown could be replicated and oth-
ers even after being shown remained a mystery (to me anyway!) A couple of people
tried out the flight simulator and then a group headed off for 9 holes of Mini
Golf……Will with his real life golf experience came in first followed by Judy and ME!
Hank scored a hole in one on his first ever try of mini golf…. Well done. Our next
division get together is planned for September and will be in the Rotorua area, any
ideas please let Rachel know.
Keep warm over the next couple of months

Write and read aloud every day, even if you have great
difficulty with it. Keep a book or a diary to give incentive
and keep a record of your progress, Buy a dictaphone,
a poetry book or learn the words to a new song and sing
it out loud. Use it or lose it.

I find that using the telephone with a tremor is often a
problem, as I keep bashing my head with the handset!
My solution is to get a hands-free speakerphone . Look out for a good, business quality item. You'll wonder
how you managed without it.

Playing dad's favourite music
encourages an impromptu sing- along
(probably not great for the neighbours but
fun for us!) to exercise his vocal chords. I
also think his attendance at a day
centre twice a week is invaluable in
maintaining and enhancing his
communication skills. He has to
make that extra effort to make himself
heard and understood with people who
don't know him as well as we do!

Jigsaws are a great fill in for the odd spare moment. The trouble is the size I like, 1000 pieces, take up quite a bit of table room.
I have overcome this by adapting a bedside table on wheels for shifting around as required. It can also be repositioned around my chair depending on which side of the puzzle I want to work on. One problem I tried to rectify was the height. Not recommended unless you are mechanical. I had no end of trouble stripping it down. If you want to change the height adjust the chair.
A friend asked how I tackle assembling a jigsaw. My technique is to do the edges first then sort the pieces into colour dishes such as red, blue, green and various. Then I start on the easiest parts preferably attached to a side. If I end up with a floating section there is a lot of shifting of islands when a link to an edge is found.
Jigsaws are a lot of fun especially if you don’t refer to the picture on the box.
