PRESIDENTS MESSAGE T he City Park Community Association kicked off a fresh season with a Cycle Festival and AGM at City Park School on Sept 7. A great time, great turnout, and amazing music by Oral Fuentes and his band. In fact, the CPCA board has never seen such a large board of volunteers. There are now 16 of us in total working towards providing the neighbourhood with events, activities, and connections. This is very encouraging that so many want to work to maintain our strong sense of community. Sadly, our programs coordinator, Leanne Gruending will be stepping down at the end of this term. If you are interested specifically in planning and organizing the activities that are offered in our neighbourhood, please let us know. If you are interested in helping out our volunteers with any of the regular work - rink flooding and clearing, programs, or specific events, please feel free to contact any board member via email addresses on our website. W e are all still getting used to the new Montessori school. It has brought with it a lot more traffic down 9th Ave as harried parents drop their children at school, but it has also brought a whole new feel to the building. All of the sudden the school became alive again and there are families making an effort to walk or cycle there. The school changes have brought some challenges to our programming, as we have lost some of our rental spaces and are now searching for new spaces to run our regular programs. The toy library has moved to a cozy little room on the main floor of the building and is still operating on Friday mornings. T he Shop Easy renovation got underway, only to be slowed down by current zoning regulations. The building was built in the 1950’s and does not meet modern setback requirements. An application to the City has been made to allow the building to maintain its B zoning designation. Tenant inquiries are steady but no grocery store has yet been confirmed. The owners are still hopeful and doing their best to make that happen. Another large property, the Duke Street townhouses has also been purchased by City Park residents. It is exciting to see residents investing in their own community. I think these efforts inspire all of us to work at keeping our sense of community as strong as it is. M ore good news -two rental houses exhibiting suspicious and disruptive behaviour have been successfully changed thanks to the efforts of residents. One house on 6th Ave N was purchased, renovated and re-rented by a neighbouring family, another one on 8th Ave N was finally evicted and re-rented thanks to the persistence of the surrounding families and police intervention. Nice work neighbours, and thank- you for these efforts. A s for upcoming events, you can look forward to a ski day in Kinsmen Park, a rink day, yard Christmas decoration contest, and our annual wine night. President’s Message

The City Park Community Association kicked off a fresh season with a Cycle Festival

and AGM at City Park School on Sept 7.

We are all still getting used to the new Montessori school. It has brought with

it a lot more traffic down 9th Ave as harried parents drop their children

at school, but it has also brought a whole new feel to the building.

The Shop Easy renovation got underway, only to be slowed down by current zoning

regulations. I think these efforts inspire all of us to work

at keeping our sense of community as strong as it is.

More good news -two rental houses exhibiting suspicious and disruptive

behaviour have been successfully changed thanks to the efforts of residents. One house on 6th Ave N was purchased, renovated and re-rented by a neighbouring family, another one on 8th Ave N was finally evicted and re-rented thanks to the persistence of the surrounding families and police intervention. Nice work neighbours, and thank-you for these efforts.

As for upcoming events, you can look forward to a ski day in Kinsmen Park, a rink

day, yard Christmas decoration contest, and our annual wine night. Watch for updated information in the newsletter, on our website and Facebook page.

If there is enough interest in forming the community group, we will schedule an event to get everyone together. Potential projects for the City Park Built Heritage Committee to showcase heritage in the community include writing heritage articles for the CA newsletter; designing brochures about renovating character homes in the neighbourhood; organizing heritage hardware swaps and walking tours; hosting workshops to share information on renovating older homes; and more!

Are you interested in the heritage and architecture of the City Park neighbourhood and its character homes?

Are you passionate about promoting heritage to others?

We’d like to hear from you! The City Park Community As-sociation and the City of Saskatoon are looking for interested individuals to form a City Park Built Heritage Committee.
