President’s Report

Hello, ladies. Well, this is my last opportunity to figuratively put pen to paper, and say goodbye as President. And it’s time! I look around the meetings now and see a lot of new, younger faces, and I guess I think it’s time to let you take over the job! I’ve been in the Guild from day one, and so far have sat in the audience for exactly one month! When I was recruiting for the next Executive I talked to a lot of bright new members who said that eventually they would serve on the Executive, but that now wasn’t the right time in their lives, or that they didn’t know enough about the Guild, or that they didn’t know enough of the people. I truly believe that new faces and new minds doing the jobs available in the Guild are what will keep it vibrant and interesting. I’m confident that next year’s Executive will serve you well!

Most of the ladies who worked on the Show Committee have said they have done the job long enough! We will be looking to you ladies to step up and take over the Committees for the next Show.

Don’t know about you – but I’m looking forward to summer, and to some new travel adventures. Found this great tutorial by Jenny Doan at the Missouri Star Quilt Company and can't wait to try it. You use 2 1/2" strips so it's perfect for a Jelly Roll, or you can cut your own. She makes it easy and gives you little tips along the way. http://blog.missouriquiltco.com/cutting-corners-quilt/

I’ve got nothing to wear! Do you look in your closet and think this? Here’s a creative gal who dealt with the problem. She made her prom dress and boyfriend’s vest out of gum wrappers. She stitched them to interfacing, then quilted part of it. It is stunning! http://www.littlethings.com/gum-wrapper-prom-dress/ Submitted by Sharon G. (#518)

Canada’s 150th Birthday Challenge

Lana and I would like to challenge the guild this year by coming up with a unique way of celebrating Canada’s 150th birthday. We thought creating wall hangings inspired by the masters of Canadian landscapes, The Group of Seven, would be a challenge. After creating these masterpieces, we would like to put them on display in a venue in Ft. Langley. We have approached a few places and are waiting for their feedback before we proceed with this challenge. Details of the challenge also have to be worked out and we hope to have all this completed by the next guild meeting. This is just a suggestion that we are putting out there and, if there is enough interest, we will go ahead. If not, we will not pursue this idea further, but we do hope that our guild will be represented when the community celebrates Canada’s 15th Birthday. Nora F. (#114)

Community Quilts

It’s been a busy time in Community Quilts. All the quilts set aside for the Show have been distributed to Ishtar House, the Gateway of Hope, Jackson Manor, Langley Lodge, Best Babies, and Victim Services. The Quilt of Valour will soon be taken to Honour House in New Westminster.

I have received fifteen quilts so far for Fort Mac; they will all be handed over to Heather MacArthur, the owner and editor of Quilters Connection Magazine, for eventual transit to Alberta. I will be away throughout June, so if you wish to donate to Fort Mac, you can continue to take the quilts to Quilters Connection, but contact Heather through her website first.

In May, I delivered four quilts to a refugee sponsor group who contacted us through our member Torrianne A. (#280). The group is awaiting a second family, and Carolyn S. (#274) is going to look after their needs.

An Oldie but a Goodie:

The Quilter’s Husband's Lament

I've always learned that life was full of obstacles and woes. I've learned to live with sickness, death, taxes, heaven knows.

I've taken all these things in stride, the problems and strife, But one I didn't count on was a Quilter for a wife.

Come home from work, the stove is cold, the dirty clothes still

there, The suit I wanted cleaned today, still laying on the chair.

"Where's Mama, son?" I asked my boy, "This house is such a mess.

Why, all the sheets are missing, we've been burglarized I guess."

"No, Mama stripped down all the beds and took the sheets

away. She cut them into little strips and pieced two quilts today."

"Why every pair of pants I own is cut in little squares." "I'm demonstrating applique," my lovely wife declares.

I show up in the office in my boxer shorts and tie.

My secretary giggles and the clerks give me the eye. It's freezing cold, I'm shaking and my knees are turning blue.

My boss considered firing me, but his wife's a quilter too.

I told him what happened and he said he could believe. I noticed that the coat he wore had only half a sleeve.

A husband needs a loving wife to help him when he's ill. To soothe and comfort, mop his brow and help him take his pills.

Should influenza strike you, your life's not worth a dime,

Particularly if it hits at Quilt Convention time. You'll lay there in an empty house in pain and deep despair,

While the workshops and the lectures keep your wife's attention there.

You learn to ask no questions when she smiles and drives away,

Rushing to the Fabric Shop for a big sale there today. She's gone for hours, then drags back home all bleary eyed and

down, Now who'd believe a lie like that? She must be running round.

But I'll get by, I always do, some days are fine, some not.

When your wife's a Quilter you tolerate a lot. I know that when my life is through and I have passed away

They'll have to set my funeral so it's not a Quilting Day.

Langley Hospital Foundation

Janie S. (#33) states:

“For the last few years, The Langley Hospital Foundation has requested that the LQG donate a quilt to their “Denim & Diamonds” Gala Affair. It is a fund-raising event put on by the Foundation support the purchase of new equipment, capital projects and improve health care for Langley Memorial Hosp. At the Gala, supporters and sponsors have an opportunity to bid both on silent and live auction items. This year’s Gala was held on May 14, and $270,000 was raised. The quilt I donated consisted of machine embroidered blocks on black fabric with contrasting colourful sashing, a project started about 5 years ago and finished just this year. I am glad to have been a part of this event.
