From the Principal’s Deskcontinued from previous page....

has always been a wonderful and active contributor to the many issues that confront a school of this size. It would be great to see you there.

The key point is you can pursue your dreams, and we will do everything possible to help you do so. Our curriculum is diverse, catering to the needs and aspirations of all our students. We are large enough to offer both academic and vocational pathways in the senior school, and both of them offer large subject choices. We are also constantly reviewing our electives for Years 9 and 10, to provide for as wide a range of interests and skills as we can.

We warmly welcome back our school community and look forward to working with you on new and innovative programs in 2019. Mr Greg Court, Principal.

Year 7 Welcome BBQYear 7 students and their families are invited to a “Getting to Know You” welcome BBQ on Tuesday, 12th February from 5.30pm until 7.30pm. This is an opportunity for you to meet the parents of other children in your child’s class, various staff and P&C representatives. The sausage sizzle will be held under the hanger. It would be helpful for catering purposes to RSVP by returning the note sent home. We are looking forward to seeing as many of you as possible.

Mrs Gaye Kelsey, Deputy Principal.

Year 7 - Recipe for Success WorkshopsThis program will be delivered to all Year 7 students on either 19th or 21st February. The workshops are run by the Stellar Program staff in combination with current university students. The focus of the workshops is to introduce students to skills they will use throughout their high school years as they set themselves up for life beyond school. They are given the opportunity to explore their potential as the decision maker in their own career journey. Students leave the workshop having developed a clear plan for Year 7 which encourages the inclusion of planning, taking actions and calling on mentors and friends to help achieve their goal. Individual intentions for the future (My Big Goal) are also sealed in an envelope to be followed up again in Year 10.

The coordinator of the program, Simone Balzer, will be speaking at the first P&C Meeting on the 18th February to explain the program further. Year 7 parents are encouraged to come along to the P&C Meeting to find out more about what your student will be doing in these workshops. The P&C Meeting starts at 6.30pm in the school library. All are welcome.

Mrs Gaye Kelsey, Deputy Principal.

Best Start Year 7 AssessmentOur school will participate in Best Start Year 7, an online literacy and numeracy assessment available to secondary schools at the start of Term 1, 2019.

Best Start Year 7, undertaken within the first five weeks of the school year, assesses key literacy and numeracy skills of Year 7 students. It is designed to assist teachers to identify students who may require additional support in developing their literacy and numeracy skills.

Best Start Year 7 is just one of a range of assessments the school uses to assess students.

Please inform the school if your child has special needs requiring support to complete an online assessment.

Ms Liza Hamilton, Deputy Principal Instructional Leader.

Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) is a comprehensive, integrated whole school approach to student wellbeing and behaviour. Successful implementation of PBL is underpinned by the support of families who work with us to ensure their young people embody the values represented by our ‘FRESH’ expectations.

FRESH stands for our school core values of FAIR, RESPECT, EFFORT, SAFE and HONEST. All that we do at Maclean High School can be linked to these values, with positive outcomes achieved for our students, classrooms, school and community.

We look forward to working with students, staff and our community in implementing our FRESH values in 2019. Mrs Gaye Kelsey, Deputy Principal.
