Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) celebrates Singapore’s Golden Jubilee with a special exhibition, The Singapore Journey: 50 Years Through Stamps. It traces the birth of Singapore from an independent nation in 1965; the challenges it faced in areas of public housing, industrialisation, defence and racial harmony; achievements like the ‘City in a Garden’ concept, world-class air and sea hubs, and the development of sports, culture and the arts that have bounded the nation. The exhibition was opened by Mr Sam Tan, Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth on 20 July 2015.

The exhibition boasts the single largest display of original stamp artworks and philatelic items. Visitors can, for the first time, view original artworks of 66 Singapore stamps. Interactive multimedia features designed by students from the School of Interactive & Digital Media of Nanyang Polytechnic enhance visitors’ experience.

Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) concurrently launched a limited edition 50 Stamps for 50 Years Commemorative Folder that comprised a MyStamp sheet of 50 specially-selected stamps from the exhibition. SPM also partnered the South West Community Development Council to reproduce some stamps onto mural paintings as part of Let’s Paint Singapore @ South West SG50 community project.

World Stamp Exhibition

SPM collection on display at Court-of-Honour.

The World Stamp Exhibition is one of the world’s most high-profile philatelic events. SINGAPORE 2015 World Stamp Exhibition (SINGAPORE 2015) was held from 14 -19 August at Sands Expo® and Convention Centre. The event was hosted by the Association of Singapore Philatelists. It was held under the full support and patronage of the Fédération lnternationale de Philatélie (FIP) and under the auspices of the Federation of Inter-Asian Philately (FIAP). Singapore Post Limited was the main sponsor. Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) was proud to be a partner for the event.

Special collections from SPM were displayed at the Court-of-Honour in celebration of Singapore’s Golden Jubilee. Titled Then and Now: Formative Years & 50th Anniversary, this special showcase featured rare philatelic materials such as the Republic’s first stamp, specimen covers, and colour proofs of stamps and miniature sheets.

SPM planned and curated the Special Attractions Gallery targeted at families and casual collectors. Celebrating 50 Years of Singapore exhibition told the story of Singapore’s heritage and culture through stamps. Visitors viewed a 50-year timeline of key Singapore milestones marked with stamps. They discovered how postage stamps came about, saw unusual stamps, and learnt more about Singapore’s unique heritage, multi-ethnic culture, food and traditional games.

Families and children enjoyed interesting stamp-based activities and games at the Special Attractions Gallery.

Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) organised the annual National Stamp Collecting Competition 2015 (NSCC) that was held at SINGAPORE 2015 World Stamp Exhibition (SINGAPORE 2015). The competition promotes the study of postage stamps and philatelic materials to learn about Singapore and the world. NSCC is supported by the Ministry of Education. This year, 364 students from primary and secondary schools participated in the competition. For the judging of the NSCC entries, the judges incorporated an eJury system designed by students and lecturers of ITE College Central.

Philatelic Gems: Singapore Stamp Club

The first stamp club in Singapore, Singapore Stamp Club, celebrates its 75th anniversary this year with an exhibition of personal collections from its members. Materials on display date from the Straits Settlements era to today. Topics include postcards, airmails, crash mails, stamp essays, proofs, errors, artworks, sub post offices, island post offices of Syonan and more.

The Singapore Stamp Club was formed by a group of enthusiastic collectors in 1940.The club’s activities were disrupted by World War Two and were later revived in 1947. It had its meetings and activities in many venues until 1995 when the Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) opened. Since then, the museum has become the club’s regular meeting venue. The club organises monthly talks and quarterly stamp fairs at SPM.

The Singapore Stamp Club commemorated its 60th anniversary in 2000 with an exhibition at SPM. Special highlights of members’ collections were displayed. Similarly, to mark the club’s 75th anniversary, about 20 club members will display a total of 28 exhibits. These exhibits are the best from their collections and are shown on a rotation basis.

Friends Through StampsSingapore may be halfway around the world from the United States, but that has not stopped a special friendship from forming between Singapore Philatelic Museum (SPM) and Mr Kenneth Wills.

Mr Wills visited Singapore in 2005 and 2015. On both trips, he dropped by SPM and was very impressed with what he saw. When he got home, he sent used American stamps to SPM so that the colourful miniature pieces of history could be distributed to school children.

Mr Wills, born and raised in England, now resides in the US and is very active in searching for used postage stamps. His interest lies in collecting these treasures from former and present British colonies. He is also a past president for his local stamp club which has over 100 members. He currently manages a swap circuit for the International Society of Worldwide Stamp Collectors (www.iswsc.org) that strives to promote the fun and fascinating world of stamp collecting to the young and old.

When the United States Postal Service (USPS) launched their special Star Wars commemorative issue, Mr Wills sent a cover with the stamps to SPM. Little did he know that the cover would later be displayed at Light vs Dark Exhibition: Stamps and Collectibles which took place from March - June 2013. Recently, after reading about Return To Sender exhibition on the life of Elvis Presley, Mr Wills sent SPM a packet of used Elvis stamps that USPS issued in 1993, to be given out to museum visitors.
