SEAN Tarry is not a superstitious individual, but he does know that Pole Position in the Durban July does not hold the advantage it does in, for example, any Formula One Grand Prix. In fact, looking at statistics of the last 12 years, the July‟s Number One draw is a near „Kiss Of Death‟ – something we don‟t like to report because, like many punters, we are big fans of Tarry‟s Al Sahem! It is a day Tarry has planned and schemed towards for months so he was understandably not thrilled when Al Sahem drew at No 1. “It‟s a tricky draw for him because, at the end of the day he‟s a lazy horse and he may not be able to hold his position. I would have been happier closer to 20 than the rail for him,” said the trainer. Extended stats show that only six horses have man- aged to win the Durban July from Draw 1 since 1897 - only a low 5% of winners have come from there in 120 years, the last one being Jollify, who dead-heated with Sea Cottage a full 50 years ago. Only two horses, Jagged Ice (third in 2005) and Run For It (second in 2013), managed to get anywhere near the frame in the last 12 years while the likes of fancied runners Bulsara (2011), Whiteline Fever (2012), Espumanti (2014) and Majmu (2015), ran below best from the draw some like to call, the “plum”. The rotten plum yes! But of course history is there to be challenged and changed and Tarry won‟t be backing off and losing confidence with his talented charge, and his others. He told TAB News this week: “I think Al Sahem is a very good horse and he‟s going to get better with age.” Al Sahem, he said, is ready for the toughest test of his young career. The three-year-old stayed on nicely to finish second behind July favourite Edict Of Nantes in the Daily News 2000. “His prep‟s gone very well and there are two plus factors the extra 200m and he has now seen Greyville,” said Tarry. “I expect him to run a very good race.” Like many experts, he also believes the country‟s top three-year-old colts “seem to be under the handicappers‟ radar – they should probably be rated about 110, rather than 107 and 106. “The top three-year-olds in previous years have carried more in this race just look at Abashiri with 59kg last year,” he continued. Newsletter THTHURSDAY 9 FEBRUARY 2017 FRIDAY, 23 JUNE 2017 www.turftalk.co.za

“Where is the Number 20

draw when you need it?”

Sean Tarry, four July runners.

SEAN Tarry is not a superstitious individual, but he

does know that Pole Position in the Durban July

does not hold the advantage it does in, for example,

any Formula One Grand Prix. In fact, looking at

statistics of the last 12 years, the July‟s Number

One draw is a near „Kiss Of Death‟ – something we

don‟t like to report because, like many punters, we

are big fans of Tarry‟s Al Sahem!

It is a day Tarry has planned and schemed towards

for months so he was understandably not thrilled

when Al Sahem drew at No 1. “It‟s a tricky draw

for him because, at the end of the day he‟s a lazy

horse and he may not be able to hold his position. I

would have been happier closer to 20 than the rail

for him,” said the trainer.

Extended stats show that only six horses have man-

aged to win the Durban July from Draw 1 since 1897

- only a low 5% of winners have come from there in

120 years, the last one being Jollify, who

dead-heated with Sea Cottage a full 50 years ago.

Only two horses, Jagged Ice (third in 2005) and Run

For It (second in 2013), managed to get anywhere

near the frame in the last 12 years while the likes of

fancied runners Bulsara (2011), Whiteline Fever

(2012), Espumanti (2014) and Majmu (2015), ran

below best from the draw some like to call, the

“plum”. The rotten plum yes!

But of course history is there to be challenged and

changed and Tarry won‟t be backing off and losing

confidence with his talented charge, and his others.

He told TAB News this week: “I think Al Sahem is

a very good horse and he‟s going to get better with

age.”

Al Sahem, he said, is ready for the toughest test of

his young career. The three-year-old stayed on nicely

to finish second behind July favourite Edict Of

Nantes in the Daily News 2000. “His prep‟s gone

very well and there are two plus factors – the extra

200m and he has now seen Greyville,” said Tarry. “I

expect him to run a very good race.”

Like many experts, he also believes the country‟s top

three-year-old colts “seem to be under the

handicappers‟ radar – they should probably be rated

about 110, rather than 107 and 106.

“The top three-year-olds in previous years have

carried more in this race – just look at Abashiri with

59kg last year,” he continued. (to page 2)

STEWARDS of Racing NSW have announced

that they will be investigating a Godolphin

horse that is alleged to have tested positive to

Strangles last year.

The stewards‟ release says, "a number of inter-

views have been conducted by Racing NSW

Stewards and Investigators" into the incident

that happened in August last year.

"This investigation relates to a Godolphin race-

horse and an allegation that it suffered or was

suspected of suffering from a bacterial

condition of Strep Equi (Strangles) in August

2016," a Godolphin release said.

"Godolphin will continue to cooperate with

Stewards and the Inquiry and will not be

making any further comment at this point in

time."

In April, Victorian-based trainer Matt Cumani

was suspended for 11 weeks and fined

$20,000 for failing to inform stewards in

October last year that a horse in his Ballarat

stables had strangles. Cumani's stables were

declared an 'infected place' on November 24

before the biosecurity measures were lifted on

December 22. Racing NSW stewards will com-

mence an inquiry into the Godolphin matter

next Tuesday.—Racenet.com

TARRY AND DRAWS

“But don‟t forget there are other horses in the field, like

The Conglomerate and, maybe, It‟s My Turn, who seem

to have escaped the handicapper. It‟s all very well saying

the three-year-olds are three to four points (1.5kg to 2kg)

underrated – those older horses may be, too.”

“I won‟t say I‟m happy Anthony Delpech won‟t ride him,

either,” he said. “The whole reason he was on him in the

Triple Crown races was because to was due to ride him in

the July. Al Sahem is quite a handful and if I‟d known

Anthony couldn‟t accept the mount, I would have used

another jockey.”

Al Sahem, one four July runners from the Tarry stable,

will be floated from Randjesfontein to Durban alongside

Safe Harbour a day or two before the race.

The filly, Tarry said, “is very unlucky not to be a Grade 1

winner because she‟s been beaten by the best fillies

around, maybe fillies you don‟t find the calibre of every

season, like Nother Russia and Bela-Bela.

“She comes in with a postage-stamp weight and her last

few runs may indicate the mile is too sharp. She looks

like she may be looking for this type of trip, and her

pedigree backs that up. Her draw is perfect for her

because if you‟re drawn too well and can‟t hold your po-

sition, it‟s a problem.”

He said he was bitterly disappointed with French Navy‟s

run in the Gold Challenge, when the five-year-old wore

blinkers for the first time and got a clod in the eye.

“We‟re assuming it was the blinkers and the clod because

going into the race he was very well and he pulled up

very well. So I‟m comfortable enough that we have

sufficient excuse.

“I‟d have preferred a middle-of-the-pack draw for him

but 16 is not the end of the world. He comes from off

them and might end up a few lengths further back than I

would have liked.

Tarry‟s fourth July runner is Tilbury Fort, who he says,

“is on the up but he has to keep improving to get a blow

in”. - extracts from TAB News.

Oratorio‟s near the top with

seven first-crop winners

AVONTUUR Thoroughbred Estate‟s exciting young

stallion Oratorio made headlines in South Africa this

weekend with a pair of eye catching juvenile winners. In

the process, Oratorio took his number of South African

first crop winners to seven and the son of Danehill is now

the country‟s second leading first crop sire by stakes and

individual winners.

First of the Oratorio winners to salute was the well related

Mrs O, who impressed when making a winning debut for

owner-trainer Michael Azzie at Turffontein this Saturday.

The filly had cost R500 000 at last year‟s Cape Premier

Yearling Sale.

Second of the Oratorio 2yos to impress this past weekend

was the Avontuur bred Ancestry, who simply romped to

victory when scoring by three and a half lengths at

Scottsville on Sunday.

Runner up in the Listed Gatecrasher Stakes at his previous

appearance, Ancestry could not have won with more in

hand and he looks an exciting sort in the making. The colt,

a half-brother to G2 The Debutante winner A Womens

Way, had been a R850 000 purchase from last year‟s

Premier Yearling Sale.

Oratorio‟s other local first crop performers to impress in-

clude feature race winner Arianos Bagofgold, stakes per-

formers Sacred Oration and Sequined, and his sons

Arianos Bagofgold, Ancestry and Chantyman all hold en-

tries in the G2 Golden Horseshoe on Vodacom Durban

July Day.

Oratorio, whose previous crops produced seven G1 win-

ners worldwide, has five quality lots on next week‟s KZN

Yearling Sale-notably a half-brother to G2 Selangor Cup

winner Hard Day‟s Night (Lot 29), a filly out of a daughter

of champion Southern Spring (Lot 159), and a colt out of

G3 Magnolia Handicap winner Fair Rosalind (Lot 224). -

African Night Sky in pursuit of a

Pocket Power feat

AFRICAN Night Sky, winner of the Winter Guineas and

Winter Classic, heads a field of nine for the Grade 3

R250,000 Highlands Stud Winter Derby over 2400m at

Kenilworth on Saturday. Justin Snaith‟s runner seems sure

to start favourite to become the first horse to win all three

legs of the Winter Series since the mighty Pocket Power in

2006.

One hurried meeting at Ascot!

CELEBS are still lining up to meet our own racing

journeyman Brian Finch, though Brian did mention

that his meeting with football legend Michael Owen

was “very brief”. We had the misfortune of a (not for

more than 3 seconds) rushed-meeting Owen twice in

Dubai. The man was always in a hurry. Hurrying to

his hotel room, hurrying to the parade ring, hurrying

back to his table, hurrying to a press interview.

Hurry, Hurry, Chicken Curry! Brian’s photographer

must have been very sober, and very snappy!
