Dear Parents and Friends of the College
End of Year Celebrations
This week sees the start of our end of year
celebrations with our Christmas Concert on
Friday, Year Six Graduation on Monday and
Speech Night on Tuesday. We are proud of our
students’ achievements and their upcoming
milestones as we celebrate their journey at
the college and wish them well on their next
endeavours. Thank you to the parents who
have been involved in supporting these
events.
Rotary Seniors Lunch
Well done to our students from Hospitality,
Community Service, Glee Club and our
College Band who supported the terrific lunch
for our seniors at Frost Oval last Thursday. Mr
Terry Redmond MLA was impressed with the
efforts of our students who are giving back to
our seniors. The spirit of community was
evident in the appreciation of the seniors who
attended and thanked the students.

300 Night Reading Morning tea
I look forward to
morning tea with all the
students who have
reached their reading
milestone next week! A
terrific achievement and
well supported from home, which is
appreciated.
Off and Away All Day
I would like to remind students in Years 7-12
that from next year the department’s phone
policy will be in place and student are to have
their phones switched off and away when they
are at school. This is very different to our
current policy but I am sure students will be
respectful and follow the expected behaviour
regarding mobile phone use from 2020.
Safe Holiday Break
To all our families we thank you for your
support during 2019 and wish you a safe and
restful holiday break. We look forward to
seeing students return on Monday, February 3
2020. The office will be open from January 29
if there are any enquiries.

At the Christmas Concert this Friday, each
class will be dropping off their Christmas Care
Hamper under the Christmas Tree. The
donations will be collected by the Community

Thank you to those families that have already
donated non-perishable food, toiletries and/or

support local families in need this Christmas.
Year 4-6 Interschool Jumps & Throws Tea
Frances Wright Library
Wow! What a crazy year, with a total of 36,
138 loans and returns! We certainly keep
busy!
Thanks again to all the people who have
supported us by purchasing items from either
Book Club or Book Fair – every purchase really
does benefit the whole school. We have raised
a total of $2413 for new library books in this
year’s Book Fairs alone, so you can see it
really does make a difference!
Sad news for many, we would like to let
everyone know that Mrs Dot Gorman will not
be returning in 2020 and will be off travelling
for a bit. Mrs Gorman has been an integral
part of the school for around 30 years and we
wish her all the best. If you would like to say
goodbye and thanks, please feel free to drop
in to the MBCC resource centre any time in the
last few weeks.
We hope everyone has an enjoyable break
and we look forward to seeing everyone in
2020! Merry Christmas from the MBCC
Resource Centre.
Thank you Mrs Gorman

Year 1 – 6 PBS Water Fun Sessions
All of the students have been working hard to
finish off the year successfully. The staff have
been rewarding the students with Spirit Cup
tokens for displaying the following expected
behaviours.
Be Your Best
Be Responsible
Be Resilient
Be Respectful
Each House was given the target of obtaining
500 Spirit Cup tokens this term. Once each
House achieved their total, they would be
rewarded with a Water Fun Session at the
College.
All three Houses have reached their total at
the same time and will be rewarded with a
Water Fun Session this Thursday 12th
December. Each House will have a 40-minute
session that will involve waterslides and water
battles near Bush Block.
Students are asked to bring the following to
school:
Bathers
Rashie
Towel
Thongs
Sunscreen
Water pistol (optional)
Plastic bag to put wet items in
The students have done incredibly well to earn
so many Spirit Cup tokens in a short space of
time and all of the teachers have very sore
fingers after filling in so many tokens.
PBS Team
Mount Barker Bishops Chess Club
Melbourne 1-3 Dec
The National Chess Championships for 2019
are over and the team have done their best,
achieving 17th Team place out of 29!
https://tornelo.com/chess/orgs/ku/events/na
tional-finals--13/pairings
Competing between 1-3rd December in
Victoria, the team of ten consisted of Captain
Mason Cousins, Ayden Tempany, *****
George Theron, Max Wright, Bodhi Gregory,
Isabel Van Den Bogert, Stan Ebert, John
Righton and Ben Bateman.
I was keeping track of
the live game and
Max deserves a
special mention for
playing a couple of
the longest games!
Always hard to get
through to the end.
He made one into a
draw which was well
done!
Our top player was
Ayden Tempany,
who finished the
Finals 39th out of
150 primary
students. A great
effort. As an
indication of the
difficulty our team
were facing, Ayden
finished with a
rating of 864. The
highest rated
player in the primary division finished on
1665, with almost a third of the primary
players rated at over 1000. (To be a Grand
Master, a rating of 2500 is needed.)
Second placement went to **** and George
Theron, third.
Congratulations to the whole team. They
earned the right as a team and they did their
best as a team. Well done!
Thanks also to Jayden Williams who travelled
from Albany to attend our Thursday
preparation sessions after school. He has
competed at State and National level several
times and was able to give the team practical
advice as well as some great game ideas.
A massive thank you once again to the
parents who organised the fundraising to get
the team to Melbourne and those who
accompanied them, it’s a big ask.
Thank you again to the community who
supported them and to our primary
sponsors: Aberdeen Dental, Mount
Barker Co-operative, Bendigo Bank,
Southern Haulage and Mount Barker
Community College. I’m really proud to be
part of a community where this can happen.
We are looking toward 2020 and the
possibility we might earn this invitation again,
so look out for fundraising activities earlier on
in the new year. We’ll try to spread it out a
bit! We are also investigating possible online
competitions with other school groups. Our
players only get to play up to 3 tournaments
a year (one of them is the Nationals) while
over in the eastern, chess tournaments are
played on a regular basis throughout the year.
What’s that? Another Quiz Night? Hmmm … I’ll
have to think about that!

Year One’s Explore the Porongurups
The Year One students had fun exploring the
Porongurup National Park and making
connections to their Humanities studies. The
weather was glorious and the students all had
a wonderful time surrounded by nature.
“2000 doesn’t seem that long ago
and now it’s 2020”
I recently watched or listened (or both) to a
YouTube video on the arrival of the
Millennials.
Here it is https://www.facebook.com/oneSlydor/
videos/317269305387710?sfns=mo
Welcome to the generation that has never
known life without seemingly unlimited access
to infinitely amazing feats of technology which
they are able to absorb with the speed of a
click. I still marvel at being able to achieve the
copy and paste routine.
But have kids changed, maybe, maybe not.
As the Workplace Coordinator, I see young
people who are still excited and often a little
nervous, about going out into the workplace.
Within a short space of time their confidence
grows, they mature a bit and they usually
become more focussed on achieving their
school goals through seeing the relevance of
their studies.
Well in the ideal world this is how it works.
As teachers, we know it works best when the
employer, parents and educators are all on
the same page, encouraging students to value
the educational opportunities they have been
given. Without fail I can say that this has been
the overwhelming response from our
employers and parents, so a big thank you
from the staff at the Mount Barker Community
College.
I would also like to thank all the employers
and supervisors who supported our students
in the year 2019. Many employers gave work
placements to several students throughout
the year.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY -
CANTEEN MANAGER, MBCC P&C INC.
A very exciting opportunity has arisen for an
energetic, enthusiastic and motivated person, with
a flair for all things food, to manage daily
operations of our lovely college canteen; four to
five days a week, fixed term contract basis,
commencing with the new school year 2020.
Working with a proactive and collaborative P&C
Canteen Committee and college admin staff, your
initiative to suggest and implement ideas, ability to
maintain an upbeat working environment and
dedication to design and promote a healthy,
interesting menu will be highly valued.
You will manage the running of this well organised
canteen, overseeing day-to-day operations to
service approximately 700 children and staff,
increasing profitability wherever possible while
upholding College and P&C values while building
positive relationships with students, parents, staff
and P&C members.
Adhering to the Traffic Lights System, MBCC
Canteen Policy and all relevant safety and hygiene
guidelines, you will prepare, cook and serve fresh
snacks and meals (including bulk cooking to stock
the freezers), recruit and train volunteers, maintain
accurate financial records, operate a clean and
secure canteen, manage stock levels and work as a
team with canteen staff, Volunteers, VET students,
P&C, MBCC Principal and college staff.
Previous experience in all aspects of running a
commercial kitchen is essential, as are outstanding
communication skills, a Police Clearance and
maintaining a current Working With Children
check. A flair for marketing, promotion and
fundraising are highly desirable, as is the
willingness to attend (or current completion of)
Traffic Light training, StarCAP2 and/or TAFE School
Canteen Management Course.
To apply, forward your resume and a cover letter
ensuring you give examples of how you meet the
essential and desired selection criteria
to [email protected] addressed to The
MBCC P&C Canteen Committee.
Time is of the essence so applications close 4pm
Wednesday 11th December 2019.

Dyslexia Assist thanks Mt Barker Co-op
Fudge Friday is an annual fun filled fundraiser
that was run recently by the very enthusiastic
Wiehl family.
There were numerous types of yummy fudge
available for purchase all themed to popular
children’s fairy tales.
The Dyslexia Assist Sub Committee was
successful in obtaining funds from the Mount
Barker Co-operative Community Chest earlier
this year and the money was put towards
purchasing fudge ingredients, from the Co-op
of course! Gratitude and appreciation is
extended to the Co-op
for their generous
support.
Proceeds from the Fudge
Friday fundraiser will go
towards purchasing
additional resources to
support students with
Dyslexia.
Catering Capers
The P&C Fundraising Committee had the
pleasure of catering for the Co-op AGM which
was held recently at Sounness Park. A range
of delicious savoury and sweet finger foods
were offered and some very positive feedback
was provided by the meeting attendees.
Should you ever need a local caterer for either
a small or large function, you are encouraged
to consider the P&C. For further information,
contact Nat on 0409 491 934.
Thanks to Nat, Jane, Kerri, Linda and Caroline
for their fabulous catering efforts.
Thank You Volunteers
As the school year comes to a close its time to
thank all our wonderful P&C volunteers for
their valuable contributions throughout the
year. 2019 has been a successful year for the
P&C with improved parent engagement and
numerous successful fundraising activities
held throughout the year, including catering
for the St John Ambulance Christmas dinner
on the weekend, which was conducted by the
Early Childhood Committee. Many parents,
carers, staff and students have been generous
with their time and talents, making important
contributions for the betterment of our school.
On behalf of the 2019 P&C Committee,
heartfelt thanks to all of our volunteers for all
of your efforts. Your assistance is greatly
appreciated!
Award Ceremonies
It is with great pleasure that the P&C has
again contributed to the awards at both the
primary and high school award ceremonies.
Congratulations to all graduating students and
the award winners. Well done also to all the
students who didn’t win an award but applied
themselves throughout the year to be their
best, like Hope, behaved respectfully and
responsibly like Slither and Apex and/or were
resilient, like Zigi.
Season’s Greetings from the P&C
Best wishes to all our staff, students and
parents for a safe and wonderful Christmas.
May you return well rested and refreshed,
ready to tackle 2020!

Newman’s Own – the actor Paul Newman’s
philanthropic trust - has granted Leeuwin
Ocean Adventure funding to enable 20 young
Western Australians from drought affected
areas from across the state with an
extraordinary opportunity – funding 90% of a
voyage fare on the STS Leeuwin II, sailing
between Albany and Fremantle in March 2020.
Leeuwin Ocean Adventure is keenly aware of
the difficulties faced by families in regional
Western Australia and we submitted a request
for funds through Newman’s Own, using a
map of drought affected areas (BOM May
2019 attached) to demonstrate the severity of
rainfall deficiency in this State. The funding
we have received will provide:
• 20 young Western Australians, aged
between 14 and 25, $2,100 towards the total
voyage fare – balance payable $250
• A travel allowance of $150 per person to
assist in the cost of travel to and from the ship
As an added bonus, secondary students in
years 10-12 may earn a unit towards their WA
Certificate of Education and have their voyage
participation entered onto their WA Statement
of Student Achievement.
Applications for the sponsored berths close on
31 December 2019. The application form is
attached.
We will assess all applications in the first week
of January and let successful applicants know
by 15 January 2020.
Successful applicants will be required to
complete a personal and medical details form
and pay the balance of their fare before 31
January 2020.
Unsuccessful applicants will also be advised
and we will work to find other sponsorship
funding and provide them with some helpful
hints around fundraising towards future
voyage opportunities.
Application forms at the college office.
