Students are excited to come back to school to meet their old classmates or are joining us for the very first time! New school clothes are picked out days ahead of time, supplies are labelled, lunches are packedand thats not just the teachers! I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and is ready for the new school year. Weve had a busy summer at the school. The construction is ongoing but is making excellent progress. A huge thank you goes out to our Superintendent, Dr. Yanitski, and the BGRS maintenance department for making sure that the students can get into the two new rooms as soon as possible! The construction is almost done! Access through the exterior doors in that area will be limited to emergency access until the landscaping is completed. Part of the park- ing lot is also being worked upon while some services are relocated, but that too should be returned back to regular use shortly. Please remember that throughout the year, the bus loop and parking lot are closed to pick-up and drop-off from 8:00-8:45 and again from 3:00 to 3:45. This is to ensure the safety of our students as they en- ter and leave our building. For those requir- ing handicapped/disabled access, please make sure that your sticker is displayed clearly in your window and the bus loop can be accessed if absolutely necessary. For all others, please use the street and remind your children to use the marked crosswalks. ents have a kiss’n’go area on the street. To prevent injury to members of our school family, vehicle traffic will not be permitted in the bus loop between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. This time represents the highest potential risk to students.

For those parents who are volunteering at the school, we have visitor parking in the east parking lot. Please do not park your vehicles in the bus lane. You may also park on West Have Drive. Thank you for your continued cooperation in this very important matter.

Meet the Staff/Hot Dog Barbeque & Annual General Meetings

Thursday, September 6th

West Haven Public School Council and West Haven Public School Fundraising Society

5:30—6:30 PM - Join your child’s teacher in the classroom for an informal Meet & Greet.

Following the Meet and Greet we will be having our AGM of both our School Council and our Fundraising Society. All are encouraged to attend.

Supervision The safety and well-being of our students is one of our greatest concerns. In order to assist us in en-suring that we maintain adequate supervision of students, please note the following supervision times and related requests Supervision AM (before school) – Our entry bell is at 8:30 AM. Beginning at 8:15 AM, we have staff on supervision. If your child attends a daycare or day home that transports your child to our school, please confirm that they are not dropping him/her off prior to this time. We do not want chil-dren unsupervised. Morning, lunch and afternoon recesses – These times are fully supervised by our own dedicated staff. After School Supervision – Staff members are outside from 3:15 PM until 3:30 PM. Please note that if your child wishes to remain at school to play at the playground, they must go home first or be with a parent or supervisor.

Parents, please assist us with ensuring optimal supervision in doing the following:

If you are riding your bike to school to pick up your child, we would ask that you model appropriate safety rules by walking your bike on school property and walking across marked crosswalks.

If you have your dog with you when you pick up your child, we would ask that you wait by the fence

which follows the street with your pet. Sometimes we have children afraid of animals or we have children who tend to excite the pet and we would hate for an injury to occur or an animal to be placed in a situation where they are over excited.

funds for cancer research.

Run is Friday, September 28 at approximately 1:05 p.m. Parents and siblings are welcome to join in!

This year, we are encouraging all students in our school to

donate a toonie to the Terry Fox Foundation for Cancer Re-search. We hope that a cure for this terrible disease can be

found!

Bus Reminder

If your child rides the BGRS yellow school bus, they must have their bus pass with them. The pass needs to be scanned daily. Please encourage your child to be on time for the bus pick up and departure time to and from the school.

Milk Program

West Haven Public School is happy to offer a milk program to our students in grades K-6.

Milk cards are sold online and through the office at a price of $18.00 which will buy the student 20 - 236ml chocolate or white milk.

Once purchased, these cards are kept in the classroom by the teachers, who will track or-ders and usage. When students are running low on their milk punch cards, the teacher will let them know so that they have time to purchase another card before their current one runs out.

This year, our school milk program begins on Monday, September 17th.

Homework Catch Up

Many parents are concerned when their child misses school due to prolonged illness and/or family vacations. Many of the class-room activities that students are engaged in on a regular basis involve discussion or group activities that are hard to replicate for homework. Please note that family holi-days are not excused absences and parents are responsible for ensuring that students have access to educational activities. Teachers will provide general guidelines for parents that deal with the topic under study. It is not possible to replicate lessons taught or provide detailed homework for each student across each subject area. During these occasions, we recommend that parents have their child read on a regular basis, keep a journal to promote writing skills, practice math concepts, etc. through games and computer assisted activities. Parents are also encouraged to access cur-riculum information and related computer activities through the BGRS website (ICT).

Our teachers will work with parents to en-sure that students have an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of con-cepts in a timely fashion upon their return.

Microwave Program

The WHPS School Council will once again be running a microwave lunch program for elementary students beginning in October. On these days students may bring food that requires reheating. Parent volun-teers will heat up the lunches in time for the lunch hour. Once the WHPSSC holds their AGM, we will have more information about this program.

Large Items on School Busses

Parents of students who are riding the bus this year are reminded that items such as hockey sticks, curling brooms, skateboards, etc. are not be allowed on busses. Articles cannot be transported that are more than 13” x 13” x23”. This applies to busses that regularly transport students, as well as busses that take stu-dents on field trips.

West Haven Hot Lunch Program

West Haven Public School has a hot lunch program that run on most Fridays throughout the year.

Ordering for this program is done online. Parents do need to set up a new account each year, as profiles are not carried over from one year to the next.

Our hot lunch program will open for ordering on Sep-tember 1st and close at midnight on September 15th. Subsequent menus will be available to order on the 1st of each month, and the deadline for those or-ders will be the 15th of each month prior to the lunch menu's month. All orders must be COMPLETED AND PAID BY THE DEADLINE. The system will not allow you to order after the deadline, and any orders that are unpaid after the deadline, will be considered incomplete and removed from the system.

Instructions for setting your account are attached to this newsletter.

Bake Sale

We will run a bake sale each month. Each class in our school has an opportunity to host a bake sale. All items sell for 50 cents and students are limited to purchasing 1 item each in the morning. If there are leftover items, stu-dents may be given the opportunity to pur-chase additional items at lunchtime.

Classroom representatives will notify parents well in advance of the month of their sale and the quantity of items that are required. All monies collected are for that classroom’s use. This year’s bake sale dates will be in the October newsletter.

Staff Planning & Development Days

BGRS’s staff planning & development program and the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s Institute days for all staff will continue again this year. These include:

September 14th

October 19th

November 1st December 7th

February 1st March 22nd April 12th May 17th

Students do not attend classes on the above dates.

Lost and Found

It is very discouraging each year when we see the amount of clothing and other articles that are lost and never reclaimed. The main reason is that most of the articles are not la-beled, and we have no way of knowing to whom they belong. We are asking parents to go on a HUGE labelling blitz. Please….take the time to mark all of your child’s clothing / articles / belongings.

Learning Common News

I hope everyone had a wonderful summer! I am looking forward to spending time with all of the students during library classes this school year. Students will be visiting the library once a week to sign out books, share ideas and stories, participate in Scholastic Book Fairs, do homework, or work on projects. All students will be able to check out books for one week but can always renew them for an additional week (or longer).

Textbooks will also be assigned to stu-dents during the first week of September and it is their responsibility to take proper care of them.

Welcome Back!

Ongoing Communication

We encourage and value parent’s in-

volvement in education. Please main-

tain regular communication with your

child’s teacher by reading agendas

nightly, providing your email address

and contact information to the teacher

and attending parent/teacher confer-

ences. You may also call the school at

780-986-5991 to speak to staff mem-

bers.

Fundraising Society You can support the Fundraising Society by patronizing Boston Pizza (in Leduc). Bring your BP receipts to the school office so the fundraising society can receive 5% back. Thanks for your support! Stay posted for an announcement about a school Coop number. Whenever people get gas, liquor or groceries, or supplies from the building centre they can give our Coop number and the school will get a small portion back every year. Every little bit helps!

Volunteers/Visitors: Please sign in

We appreciate the many volunteers who help out at our school. We also have many visitors to our school and parents who drop items off for their children. The safety and security of your children and our staff is of the ut-most importance. In order to know who is in our school at all times, it is imperative that volunteers and visitors at West Haven Public School sign in and out at the office. If parents wish to wait for their children, please meet your child outside their boot room door. We would also like to remind our volunteers and visitors that student and staff privacy is an important part of our school and we would ask that you respect student and staff pri-vacy by not discussing students or staff in the community. If there is a need for a parent/guardian to be aware of an issue, the staff at the school are in the best position to do so. We also ask that volunteers in our school refrain from asking staff personal questions about students who are not their own children. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Need to Reach Us?

Our school office is open daily between 8:00 AM and 4:00 PM if parents wish to call a staff member. If the staff member is unavailable to take your call, you may ask to leave a voice message and the staff member will return your call. It is often difficult for a teacher to take a call immediately pre-ceding the warning bell in the morning or right after school in the afternoon, so we would ask parents to call at times other than these very busy times. To ensure effective and timely communication, if you have an e-mail address, please provide it to your child’s teacher. This will enable staff to communicate with you electronically . Staff may be emailed at the school by the following format: first name.last [email protected] From time to time it may be necessary for the school to relay a message from you to your child. Again, the times immediately preceding dismissal are extremely busy in the office. We would ask that parents use the student agendas to remind their children of plans for after school and only ask the school to relay a message if it is of an emergent nature. We are sometimes asked to remind students to go for a haircut or to walk with someone. These types of messages should be passed on to your child verbally and if necessary, placed in the agenda. Students are not allowed to use the office phone to make play dates with other students. These arrangements need to be made before the student arrives at school.

Safety Drills

BGRS has a comprehensive emergency response plan. The safety of our students and staff is im-portant to us. WHPS will be practicing various safe-ty drills. These include fire drills and school lock down procedures. Discussions with students will precede our drills to increase the awareness of safe-ty procedures and decrease possible anxiety.

In the event of an actual school lock down, parents will be advised by text or email (after the event) of the necessity for the lock down. If alternate arrange-ments for pick up are necessary, we will contact parents.

School Newsletter/Updated Webpage

Our newsletters and school webpage are two of the best ways of communicating all pertinent information about the school. We are continuing to be GREEN! All news-letters will be posted to the school webpage. Generally, this will occur on the last day of the month. Access these at whps.blackgold.ca

Kids Plus Accident Insurance

For your convenience, we have made arrangements for families to voluntarily purchase student accident insurance through the Kids Plus Accident Insurance Program, underwritten by Industrial Alli-ance Insurance and Financial Services Inc. Kids Plus Accident Insurance offers protection against the unexpected costs of injury from accidents, and is especially valuable for families who: Do not have medial or dental plans, Have limited plans, as it may help supplement health and dental benefits, or Have active children who enjoy sports and outdoor activities. Kids Plus Accident Insurance has a selection of plans to suit most budgets. Benefits include coverage for: The full school year (September to September), 24 hours a day, whether at school or at

home; Expenses that are often limited or not covered by private or group insurance plans, or Pro-

vincial Health Insurance Plans—such as ambulance, physiotherapy, private tutoring, coun-seling, and much more;

Injury-related dental treatment (including future dental treatment up to age 26); Out-of-province or country emergency medical expenses. If your address changes during the school year, your Kids Plus Accident Insurance plan is transferable from school to school, anywhere in Canada. Insurance premiums are $14.50 and $33.50 per year, depending on the plan selected, and your child is covered all the time, not just while at school. A discounted premium is available for families with 3 or more children. For more information or to apply online, please visit www.kidsplus.ca or speak with a Kids Plus Client Service Administrator at 1-800-556-7411.

Lunch Hour Rules

Students are responsible for their behavior and if on-going issues occur and a resolution cannot be reached, the school reserves the right to withdraw the privilege of eating in the class for a period of time or indefinitely. All students are expected to be seated while eating lunch. There should be no throwing of

food or utensils. Students are expected to be in their own classroom during the lunch hour. Students may talk or visit while eating; however, the noise level in a classroom should be at

an acceptable level. If students need to leave their classroom, for any reason (e.g. bathroom, office, to put

things in lockers, etc.) they are to check with the teacher before doing so. Students are expected to clean up after themselves. Each classroom has paper towel and

cleaning solution. When the lunch hour bell rings to go outside for recess, students are to go outside

promptly. Supervisors are asked to ensure all students are out of the classroom and then please turn off lights and close the door.

If students are to remain inside for any reason, they must be in the class supervised or in the office.

If a teacher has to speak to a student for misbehavior during the lunch hour, they will monitor the number of times the problem(s) is/are occurring and may contact the parent.

LUNCH HOUR PROTOCOL: With the start of a new school year, we would like to take the opportunity to review the lunch hour protocol for the students who stay at school for lunch. Students are welcome

to stay for lunch but they must abide by the rules that have been established. We ask for parents’ support in reviewing these expectations with their child. A copy of these expecta-tions are printed below.

At West Haven Public School students go outside from 12:00 to 12:20 and then eat lunch

in their classrooms from 12:20 until 12:40. We do not utilize parent supervisors during the lunch hour. Our students are supervised by homeroom teachers during this period. Students go outside, weather permitting and there is always a staff member ‘on call’ in the

office to deal with issues/injuries which may occur. For the most part, our students are well behaved during the lunch hour. In the event of problems during the lunch hour, the

teacher on duty will deal with the issue. In the event of repeated issues with a particular student, we will contact the parents to advise them and to seek a resolution. We appreci-ate your support.

HOT LUNCH 2018 - 2019

As we get ready for exciting year at West Haven Public School, it is also time to get the Hot Lunch Program up and running. We will be using an online order system, as well as, a PayPal only payment sys-tem. This system proved quite successful to many local schools, so we're hoping for just as much suc-cess for WHPS this year. Please note that you will need to set up a new account every year, as the pro-files do not carry over from year to year. Here's how to get started...

Go to www.westhaven.hotlunches.net Click on "Click Here to Register" Enter Access Code WHPS18-19 Complete the rest of the registration form. (Including your email address will ensure you receive

reminder emails about hot lunch order deadlines, and your child's hot lunch order for the up-coming week)

Click "Register Now" Follow the instructions to add each child in your family who attends Leduc Estates School Once your child(ren) has been registered, click on "Orders" Proceed to order October's hot lunch for your child(ren)

PayPal: The WHPS School Council only accepts hot lunch order payments through PayPal (www.paypal.com). No cheque or cash payments will be accepted at any time. You can either pay with a credit card as a PayPal guest, or set up your own PayPal account. If you do not have a credit card, or choose not to pay with a credit card, you can set up your PayPal account to link to your bank account. This will allow your PayPal payments to be debited directly from your bank account. If you choose to link your bank account to your PayPal account, please allow a minimum of one week to ten days prior to the hot lunch deadline to complete this process. Linking your PayPal and bank account includes PayPal making two small deposits into your bank account, and you verifying those deposits back to PayPal. This process could take a few days. The hot lunch online order system requires a small amount of setup time in the beginning as you must register each child you have attending our school prior to ordering hot lunch. Then, depending on how you choose to pay through PayPal, possibly one week or more may be required prior to the hot lunch deadline to get your October hot lunch orders paid. Once the initial setup process is complete, your hot lunch orders for the remainder of the year should be quick and simple. Upcoming hot lunch menus will be available to order on the 1st of each month, and the deadline for those orders will be the 15th of each month prior to the lunch menu's month. All orders must be COMPLETED AND PAID BY THE DEADLINE. The system will not allow you to order after the deadline, and any orders that are unpaid after the deadline, will be considered incomplete and removed from the system. **Please Note: Should you experience any issues with your PayPal account, you must contact PayPal di-rectly to solve the issue. WHPS School Council has no control over how the PayPal site operates, and therefore, cannot help with any technical issues regarding PayPal.
