warm up for their
Cross Country run
Ngā mihi mahana ki a koutou katoa
On the 26th November we are having our biannual school fair, this is what we are hoping to raise funds for: We’re working with the Ministry of Education on redeveloping our school including replacing five classrooms. As part of the review of our school we’re doing a Master Plan for our grounds to make sure that we have best possible indoors and outdoor spaces. We expect the plan will include a range of new green spaces and play areas utilising some of the less used
areas of the school. Funds raised from the Fair will be used for completing one of these spaces. Our goal is to raise $30,000 towards this. Once we’ve received the Master Plan we will identify and communicate what we’re specifically fundraising for before the Fair itself.
Central Zone Cross Country Congratulations to those athletes who are representing the school at the Central Zone Cross Country tomorrow, we wish you all the best. It is going to be wet underfoot so please bring along some warm clothes to put on afterwards. Parent/Teacher Interviews These are going to be held in week 9 of this term. Booking details will be sent home next Wednesday 14 June. School Swimming Sports This event will be held on Tuesday 27 June at Karori Pool for the Year 4-8 students. More details will come. Mātariki Please make sure you have booked this great community event in your diary- Wednesday 5 July 6-8pm. Water Tank Fundraiser A reminder-Water tank orders close off on the 12 June, delivery is the 19th June. Update on Community Hub at Brooklyn School We are a Community Emergency Hub not a Civil Defence Centre
Community Emergency Hubs are about the community coming together to do what it can to help each other - people helping people with what they have available. The Wellington Region Emergency Management Office (WREMO) works with our communities to empower and promote a community-led response to the challenges communities will face during a disaster.
As we saw in Christchurch and other disasters around the world, people want to help those in need. After a significant emergency, such as an earthquake, the community will naturally come together for company, to share their stories about their experience, hand out information, offer assistance to those who need it, and look for assistance. Community Emergency Hubs (formally known as Civil Defence Centres) are pre- identified places for the community to coordinate their efforts to help each other during and after a disaster. Community Emergency Hubs will be opened by people in their community, not official staff, when there is need for the community to help itself, such as when there has been widespread infrastructural damage, damage to buildings and roads, or communication networks are down for extended periods. To find out more review the following two WREMO Documents. WREMO Community Hub InfoGraphic pdf WREMO Hub Information pdf To view our own Emergency Preparedness please click here

Welcome New Students
Every week we are going to feature some children involved in our Moa Mentor
Programme which takes place every week during lunchtimes on a Tuesday.
The purpose of the initiative is to pair up a younger child with an older student mentor
from Year 7 and 8. The role of the mentor is to help the younger students in a range of
different ways relating to the needs of the child. This could involve sharing a common
interest, playing games, helping them adapt in social situations or generally being a
good role model.

Matariki 2017 Wednesday 5th July, 6pm – 8.pm
(with Star Walkers starting from 5.40pm)
Kia ora Whanau. Join us at School on Wednesday 5th July to celebrate Brooklyn School’s 7th Matariki. This is a time for us all to get together to celebrate new beginnings, the year ahead and to reflect and give thanks for our past. You can find more information about Matariki here: http://www.tetaurawhiri.govt.nz/assets/LanguageResources/MatarikiBooklet.pdf Catch the star walkers to school in time for a powhiri, kapa haka and waiata. Then meet up with friends (or meet new ones!) and enjoy the music & social space (warm drinks & hot food). Adults and children can join in the activities - flax-weaving, crafts, gardening, a disco and a star search. Bring your torches to enjoy the torchlight activities.
We need a few extra helpers on the night. This would involve up to one hour helping with one of the Matariki related activities or one hour either on the sausage sizzle, or serving other food or drinks. If you can help, please contact Sally Giles ([email protected])

Show Don’t Tell
Room 16 were asked to create a vivid image in the reader’s mind about their cross country experience by showing not telling.
Brendon and I were tiring in the last five minutes. We crashed together like Rhinos fighting to be the strongest. Suddenly sparks sprang out of my shoes. I zoomed passed Brendon. My heart was racing so fast I thought that it would burst. ‘Would I beat Brendon?’ Oh no! I was getting slower. I could hear my friend’s feet thumping louder and louder and they were going too fast. I had lost. One thing’s for sure, although Brendon’s my friend he’s also my running rival now. By Joshua Tsai.
Bang! We went through the corner. My tummy was full of jumping worms. My heart was beating fast. My legs almost collapsed. I was trying to pass people but they never slowed down. All of a sudden I stepped in a ginormous cushion of mud but it didn’t stop me as I was near the end. My legs were covered with mud. I pushed myself further and further. I zoomed across the field to the cross the finish line. Waahoo! I finished with a number seven on my hand. By Elissa.
My heart felt like it was going to break out of my chest before the race had even started. Everyone was shuffling towards the starting line. ‘Screech’ the whistle blew. We were off. It felt like I had wee rockets in my shoes as we zoomed down the zig zag. My stomach lurched like crazy as I went around the sharp corners. By Torben.
What’s been happening in Room16
What’s been happening in Rooms 9&10
Rooms 9 & 10 have been doing a range of science experiments this term to help them understand the different science processes that they need to put together their own science fair projects. We made crystals, lava in a cup, made paper clips float and bent water using a balloon. This all led up to them conducting their own experiments in groups to find out what sort of bacteria was growing in different parts of the school. We are very concerned about the state of the Room 11 sink!
Underwater Hockey Report
Brooklyn School’s Underwater Hockey (UWH) team played the 3rd of 8 tournaments on Saturday 27th May. There were 9 teams from Wellington primary/intermediate schools competing at the Naenae Pool & we secured a Silver Medal placing. This is a superb effort to all players. And the reality is that the team only lost the final against EBIS by a whisker – the final score not being a reflection of how close the game was.
We took a large squad of 6 new players & 7 experienced players & the team had started training prior to the tournaments (5 left in the year) and as a result, have clearly improved in increased skills levels and ability and are much more focused and able to launch straight into the games and are mentally stronger.
SENIOR PLAYERS: Mila Smith (teams Player of the Day), Moana Leduc, Nick & Cameron Jones, Hamish Simcock, Jessica Gardiner, Daniel Ewers
NEW PLAYERS: Nia Hill, Tom Curtain, Sophie Moller, Rachel Poulson, Dominic Heitger & Phoebe Patterson
